Chapter 9: The Daughter Nobody Knew About

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

Nora.

Alive.

A hospital gown.

A baby in her arms.

Impossible.

Every part of my brain rejected it.

But my heart recognized her.

The way she held the child.

The way she looked down.

That was Nora.

That was my wife.

“Gabriel?””

My mother’s voice pulled me back.

I locked the phone.

“Where did you get that?””

She frowned.

“What?””

I showed her the picture.

For the first time in years, I saw genuine shock on her face.

She stepped back.

“No.””

“What?””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

Because she didn’t answer fast enough.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“Because Nora couldn’t have…”

“Couldn’t have what?””

Her silence was an answer.

I grabbed my jacket.

“I’m leaving.””

“Gabriel, wait.””

I turned.

“Seven years ago, you took my wife’s voice away from me.””

My mother’s eyes filled.

“Please.””

“No.””

I walked toward the door.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

I spent the next hour searching through everything.

Hospital records.

Old documents.

Anything connected to Nora.

And then I found something.

A name.

A hospital.

A date.

A birth certificate.

The child’s name was Lily Nora Hart.

Born eight months before Nora died.

Mother:

Nora Elizabeth Hart.

Father:

Unknown.

I stared at the screen.

Unknown.

The word felt impossible.

Because if Nora had another child…

Why didn’t I know?

I drove straight to the address attached to the record.

A small house outside town.

A woman answered the door.

She looked about my age.

Tired.

Careful.

“Can I help you?””

I held up the photograph.

Her face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Who are you?””

She looked behind me.

Then whispered:

“You shouldn’t be here.””

“Why?””

Because she stepped outside and closed the door behind her.

“My name is Rachel.””

I waited.

She looked at the picture.

“That was taken the day Lily was born.””

“Who is Lily?””

Her eyes filled.

“Nora’s daughter.””

The words hit me.

“My wife had another child?””

Rachel looked confused.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

She looked devastated.

“Oh my God.””

“Tell me everything.””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she said:

“Nora was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“After she proved what your mother was doing.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t she?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because your mother found out.””

I felt sick.

“What happened?””

Rachel opened the door.

Inside was a little girl.

About seven years old.

Dark hair.

Bright eyes.

And a small silver bracelet around her wrist.

The same kind Nora used to buy for Amelia.

“This is Lily.””

The girl looked at me.

“Are you Gabriel?””

I couldn’t answer.

“How do you know my name?””

Rachel looked away.

“Because Nora talked about you every day.””

I walked closer.

The little girl studied my face.

“You look like the pictures.””

My voice cracked.

“What pictures?””

“Mommy’s pictures.””

I closed my eyes.

Mommy.

A word I never expected another child to say.

“Where is Nora?””

The little girl’s expression changed.

Like she understood something adults didn’t.

“She told me Daddy would come someday.””

My heart stopped.

Rachel quickly stepped forward.

“She didn’t mean it like that.””

“What happened?””

Rachel looked at me.

“She knew she might not survive.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was threatening her.””

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your mother.””

I looked at Lily.

Seven years old.

A child Nora died protecting.

A child I never knew existed.

Then Rachel handed me something.

A letter.

From Nora.

My name was written on it.

Again.

But this time, the letter began with words that made my knees weak.

Gabriel,

If you are reading this, then Lily has found you.

Please forgive me.

I never wanted to keep your daughter from you.

But I had to hide her to keep her alive.

I read the next sentence.

And suddenly understood why Nora had been afraid.

The reason she disappeared from my life.

The reason my mother had spent years controlling the story.

May you like

Because the next line said:

*The person who tried to kill me was not trying to silence me. They were trying to erase Lily.*
