Chapter 7: The Fall Behind the Glass Walls

The elevator doors closed slowly.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Not Dominic.

Not Adrian.

Not the lawyers.

Not even Vanessa.

The only sound was the quiet hum of the elevator moving upward.

Toward the executive floors.

Toward the place where Dominic had built his entire identity.

I stood beside Sophia, holding her hand.

She leaned against my arm, exhausted from a night she was too young to understand.

She had come here with a paper necklace.

A gift.

A smile.

A simple hope that her father would be happy to see her.

Instead, she had watched adults reveal secrets that should never have existed.

I looked down at her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

But children are terrible liars.

Especially when they are trying to protect their parents.

“Are you sure?””

She looked up.

“Are you going to be okay, Mommy?””

The question surprised me.

Not because she asked.

Because even after everything, she was worried about me.

I brushed her hair behind her ear.

“Yes.””

She studied my face.

“Promise?””

I smiled softly.

“I promise.””

The elevator numbers continued rising.

Twenty-two.

Twenty-three.

Twenty-four.

Each number felt like another piece of the old life disappearing.

When the doors opened, the atmosphere changed immediately.

The executive floor was nothing like the lobby.

The lights were dimmer.

The carpet was thicker.

The walls were covered with photographs of achievements.

Awards.

Partnerships.

Milestones.

Dominic’s face appeared everywhere.

A timeline of success.

A carefully designed story.

Adrian stepped out first.

The lawyers followed.

I walked behind them with Sophia.

Dominic remained beside me.

For once, he didn’t walk ahead.

He didn’t lead.

He didn’t act like the person in control.

He looked like someone entering a room where he knew the outcome might already be decided.

The boardroom doors opened.

Inside were twelve people sitting around a long glass table.

Executives.

Investors.

Board members.

People who had spent years trusting Dominic’s decisions.

The moment we entered, every conversation stopped.

The chairman of the board, Richard Morgan, stood.

“Mr. Hale.””

His voice was formal.

Not friendly.

Not angry.

Just cautious.

“Can someone explain what is happening?””

Dominic opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, one of the lawyers placed a folder on the table.

“We can.””

Richard looked at the folder.

“What is this?””

“Evidence regarding falsified documents, unauthorized transfers, and possible financial misconduct.””

The room became still.

Dominic immediately stepped forward.

“This is being exaggerated.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

Dominic’s voice strengthened.

“This is a personal dispute being turned into a corporate issue.””

I watched the board members exchange glances.

That was his strategy.

Separate the personal from the professional.

Make the betrayal sound like a private problem.

Make the consequences feel unfair.

But the documents didn’t care about his explanations.

Facts rarely did.

Richard looked at me.

“Mrs. Hale?””

I stepped forward.

“I’m not here because I’m angry.””

Everyone looked surprised.

“I’m here because my identity was used without my knowledge.””

I placed the documents on the table.

“My signature appears on agreements I never signed.””

Richard looked through the pages.

His expression changed.

A few seconds later, he looked at Dominic.

“Is this true?””

Dominic remained silent.

That was becoming his answer.

Silence.

Again.

The chairman slowly leaned back.

“Dominic.””

His voice lowered.

“You understand the seriousness of this.””

“I do.””

“Do you?””

Richard tapped the document.

“Because if these allegations are accurate, this is not a family disagreement.””

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“It isn’t what it looks like.””

One of the board members, a woman named Elaine Carter, looked toward him.

“Then explain what it is.””

Dominic looked around the table.

Everyone was waiting.

For years, he had been the person explaining things.

The expert.

The leader.

The one with answers.

But now there was no explanation that could make everyone comfortable.

Finally, he spoke.

“Some financial arrangements were made during a difficult period.””

Adrian gave a humorless smile.

“Interesting wording.””

Dominic ignored him.

“The documents were intended to protect the company.””

Elaine frowned.

“By forging your wife’s approval?””

Silence.

The room changed.

Because the board had stopped asking questions.

They were starting to understand.

Dominic looked at me.

“Vivienne, you know why I did this.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

His expression fell.

“Yes, you do.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“I know why you tell yourself you did it.””

Everyone listened.

“You tell yourself it was necessary.””

I looked at the board.

“You tell yourself you were protecting the company.””

Then I looked back at him.

“But the truth is much simpler.””

He swallowed.

“You wanted control.””

The words hung there.

Because they were true.

Dominic had always feared losing control.

When we were young, he feared poverty.

Then he feared failure.

Then he feared losing his reputation.

And eventually, he became the kind of person who destroyed everything around him just to keep appearing successful.

The door suddenly opened.

A young employee rushed in.

“Mr. Morgan.””

The chairman looked annoyed.

“What is it?””

The employee held a tablet.

“There’s a problem.””

“What kind of problem?””

The employee looked at Dominic.

Then at me.

“The article went live.””

The room froze.

Richard stood.

“What article?””

The employee placed the tablet on the table.

A news headline filled the screen.

*HALE CORPORATION EXECUTIVE ACCUSED OF SECRET FAMILY AND FINANCIAL FRAUD*

My stomach tightened.

Not because the story existed.

Because I knew what it meant.

The entire world was about to see the version of Dominic that only his family knew.

Richard picked up the tablet.

“How did this happen?””

Nobody answered.

The employee hesitated.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“The article included internal documents.””

The board members immediately looked alarmed.

Internal documents.

That meant someone inside the company had released them.

Dominic looked around the room.

His eyes moved from person to person.

Then stopped.

On Chloe.

She had entered the boardroom quietly behind us.

I hadn’t noticed.

Neither had Dominic.

Her face was pale.

“Chloe.””

Everyone looked at her.

She froze.

Richard stared.

“Ms. Bennett, do you know anything about this?””

She looked terrified.

“No.””

But nobody believed her.

Not anymore.

Dominic walked toward her.

His voice was low.

“You did this.””

Chloe’s eyes widened.

“No.””

“You leaked the documents.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then who did?””

The question made her go silent.

And that silence said more than words.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Answer me.””

Chloe looked at me.

Then at Adrian.

Then back at Dominic.

Finally, she whispered:

“I wasn’t the only one who knew.””

Dominic stopped.

“What?””

Her hands shook.

“There was someone else.””

The room became silent.

“Who?””

Chloe looked toward the glass wall overlooking the city.

Then she said:

“Someone inside your family.””

My heart stopped.

Dominic’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Chloe looked at me.

Not him.

Me.

“I found out weeks ago.””

My fingers tightened around Sophia’s hand.

“Found out what?””

Chloe swallowed.

“That Dominic wasn’t the only person hiding something.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

She continued.

“There are records of another account.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Another account?””

Chloe nodded.

“Yes.””

“Whose?””

She looked down.

Then whispered:

“Yours, Vivienne.””

The room went completely silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Chloe’s voice trembled.

“The account was created years ago.””

My heart began pounding.

“That’s impossible.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Dominic.

“He knows.””

I turned toward him.

And for the first time that night…

Dominic looked genuinely terrified.

Not because he was exposed.

Because something worse had been uncovered.

Something even he had been hiding.

“Dominic?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What account is she talking about?””

His face went pale.

And finally…

After an entire night of lies…

He whispered the truth.

“The account wasn’t created to hide money.””

A pause.

“It was created to protect you.””

I stared at him.

“Protect me from what?””

Dominic looked at the board.

At Adrian.

At Sophia.

Then back at me.

His voice barely audible.

“From the people who wanted you gone.””

And suddenly, I realized something.

May you like

Maybe Dominic’s betrayal wasn’t the beginning of the story.

Maybe it was only the part I had been allowed to see.
