Chapter 4: The Secretary Who Knew Too Much

The name on the screen stared back at me.

*Chloe Bennett.*

For several seconds, I didn’t move.

Not because I was surprised.

Because somehow, I wasn’t.

The woman who had smiled while humiliating me.

The woman who had looked directly into my daughter’s eyes and told us to leave.

The woman who had known exactly where Dominic was.

The woman who had spoken about his “wife and son” before I even knew they existed.

She wasn’t just a witness.

She was part of it.

I slowly turned my head.

Chloe was standing near the reception desk.

Her perfect expression was gone.

For the first time that night, she looked afraid.

Not embarrassed.

Not annoyed.

Afraid.

“Chloe.””

My voice carried across the lobby.

Every person nearby turned.

She straightened immediately.

“Yes?””

The fake confidence returned.

But it was weaker now.

“I have a question.””

She glanced at Dominic.

Then back at me.

“What is it?””

I lifted the tablet slightly.

“Why did you submit a document using my name?””

The silence that followed was almost unbearable.

A few guests exchanged confused looks.

The employees near the reception desk stopped pretending not to listen.

Chloe’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Adrian stepped beside me.

His voice was calm.

“Ms. Bennett, we have digital records showing your employee credentials were used to upload the document.””

Chloe looked at him.

“And you are?””

“My name is Adrian Vale.””

Something flashed across her face.

Recognition.

Everyone in the business world knew my brother’s name.

Not because he wanted attention.

Because he rarely needed to ask for it.

Chloe swallowed.

“Mr. Vale, I’m sure there’s some misunderstanding.””

Adrian looked at the screen.

“Then you won’t mind explaining.””

She didn’t answer.

That was the problem with lies.

The first one was easy.

The second one required preparation.

The third one required memory.

And Chloe was starting to forget what she had told us.

Dominic stepped forward.

“Enough.””

I looked at him.

“Enough?””

His expression hardened.

“Not here.””

Again.

Not here.

The phrase he had repeated all night.

The phrase people used when they cared more about appearances than damage.

I stared at him.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because this is not the place.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“This is exactly the place.””

I looked around.

“At the company gala you planned.””

“At the company where you built your reputation.””

“In front of the people who believe they know who you are.””

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“Vivienne.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“For years, you controlled what people knew.””

I pointed at the elevator.

“You had one family upstairs.””

I pointed toward Sophia.

“You had another family waiting downstairs.””

Then I looked at Chloe.

“And you had someone cleaning up the evidence.””

Chloe’s face turned pale.

“I never—”

“Don’t.””

I cut her off.

“Don’t stand there and pretend you’re innocent.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know anything about my relationship with Dominic.””

A strange calm came over me.

Because that sentence revealed something.

She wasn’t denying the documents.

She was defending her place.

Interesting.

“You’re right,” I said.

“I don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“But I know enough.””

Chloe crossed her arms.

“You came here tonight looking for attention.””

The words shocked even the people around her.

She actually said it.

After everything.

She looked at my daughter.

“You brought a child to a corporate event without being invited.””

Sophia immediately lowered her head.

My entire body went cold.

There were many things Chloe could say.

Many insults I could tolerate.

But she had chosen my daughter.

I walked toward her slowly.

Not quickly.

Not angrily.

Slowly.

Because anger was easy.

Control was power.

“You will never speak about my daughter like that again.””

Chloe’s confidence flickered.

“I’m just saying—”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You’re not.””

The lobby became silent.

“You’re trying to make this about me showing up.””

I held up the tablet.

“But the problem isn’t that I came here.””

I looked directly into her eyes.

“The problem is that you were already waiting for me.””

Chloe said nothing.

Because she was.

She had known.

She had known exactly what would happen when I arrived.

She had prepared the humiliation.

She had expected me to leave.

But she had made one mistake.

She underestimated how much a mother could endure when her child was hurt.

Adrian leaned toward one of his lawyers.

“Pull all communication records between Dominic Hale and Chloe Bennett from the last twelve months.””

Dominic immediately reacted.

“That’s unnecessary.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The question was simple.

But Dominic had no simple answer.

Because if there was nothing to hide, he would have said so.

Instead, he looked angry.

Not because Adrian was wrong.

Because Adrian was close.

“I won’t allow my employees to be investigated based on accusations.””

I almost laughed.

Employees.

That was what Chloe was now.

Just an employee.

Not the person who stood beside him upstairs.

Not the person who had been introduced as part of his family.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had been quiet the entire time.

Too quiet.

I studied her face.

And suddenly, something bothered me.

She wasn’t angry at Chloe.

She wasn’t shocked by the documents.

She wasn’t asking Dominic questions.

She was watching.

Observing.

Like she already knew this conversation would happen.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“Yes?””

“How long have you known about me?””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“What do you mean?””

“I mean exactly what I asked.””

She remained silent.

I stepped closer.

“Did Dominic tell you about me?””

No answer.

“Did he tell you he was married?””

Her eyes shifted.

That was enough.

Dominic immediately stepped in.

“Vivienne, don’t.””

I turned to him.

“Don’t what?””

His voice lowered.

“This is complicated.””

“Everything with you is complicated.””

The bitterness surprised even me.

Because it was true.

Every lie came with an explanation.

Every betrayal came with a reason.

Every wound came with a story.

But pain did not become smaller just because someone explained why they caused it.

I faced Vanessa again.

“Did you know?””

The entire lobby waited.

Finally, she answered.

“Yes.””

The word was soft.

But it hit harder than I expected.

Sophia was sitting only a few feet away.

My daughter heard it.

She looked up.

“Mommy?””

I immediately turned toward her.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Nothing about this was okay.

Vanessa took a breath.

“I knew Dominic was married.””

The room erupted with whispers.

Dominic closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“You told me she didn’t know.””

His silence was the answer.

Another lie.

Another piece of the person I thought I knew disappearing.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn’t know about Sophia.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Really?””

She nodded.

“He told me you two were separated.””

Separated.

The word almost made me smile.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was so predictable.

The oldest excuse.

The one people used when they wanted someone new to feel justified.

“He told you we were separated?””

“Yes.””

“Were we?””

Vanessa looked away.

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

Dominic finally spoke.

“Vivienne, I was going to tell you.””

I turned toward him.

“When?””

His face fell.

“I don’t know.””

Exactly.

He didn’t.

Because telling me would mean losing control.

The image.

The company.

The perfect executive life.

Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His expression changed after three seconds.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then he looked at me.

“Send it.””

My heart tightened.

“What happened?””

He ended the call.

Then he looked at Dominic.

“The board members just received the evidence.””

Dominic froze.

“What evidence?””

Adrian’s eyes were cold.

“The forged documents.””

A silence.

Then Dominic whispered:

“You wouldn’t.””

Adrian didn’t blink.

“I did.””

The confidence disappeared from Dominic’s face.

For the first time tonight, he looked like a man who realized he was no longer controlling the situation.

“What happens now?”” I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

He glanced toward Chloe.

“On whether she acted alone.””

Everyone looked at her.

Chloe’s breathing became uneven.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“Then you won’t mind answering one more question.””

She said nothing.

“Who instructed you to submit the documents?””

The lobby became silent again.

Chloe looked at Dominic.

Just for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Everyone saw where her eyes went.

And everyone understood.

Dominic’s face changed.

“Chloe.””

She looked terrified.

Because she had a choice.

Protect herself.

Or protect the man who had used her.

Finally, she whispered:

“I didn’t want to do it.””

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“Chloe.””

She closed her eyes.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“He told me if I didn’t…”

A pause.

Her voice shook.

“He would destroy me.””

I stared at Dominic.

And for the first time that night…

I wondered if the man who betrayed me was capable of much more than betrayal.

May you like

Because Chloe wasn’t looking at him like someone protecting a lover.

She was looking at him like someone afraid of him.
