Chapter 9: The Father Who Was Never Gone
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
I just stared at the photograph in Garrett’s hand.
A photograph of me.
Years ago.
Before I met him.
Before marriage.
Before the house.
Before the baby.
Before everything I thought I knew about my own life.
And beside me…
My father.
The man everyone told me was dead.
My fingers went cold.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Garrett lowered the phone slightly.
“Vivian…”
“No.””
I looked at the picture again.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Who is he?””
I didn’t answer.
Because saying his name out loud felt like opening a door I had spent half my life trying to keep closed.
“My father.””
The room went silent.
Rachel looked shocked.
“But you said…”
“I know what I said.””
My voice cracked.
“I was told he died.””
Garrett looked at the photograph.
“He didn’t.””
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
His expression changed.
Because there was another piece of the puzzle.
Another thing he had kept from me.
“Garrett.””
He swallowed.
“I met him.””
My heart stopped.
“You met my father?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
The same year.
Cedarcliff.
The accident.
The secrets.
Everything.
My hands began shaking.
“Why?””
Garrett looked away.
“Because of Lena.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“After the accident, Lena started looking into my life.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted leverage.””
I listened.
“She found out about your father.””
My chest tightened.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
Garrett looked at the photograph.
“But she found him.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“My father is alive?””
“Yes.””
The answer was simple.
But it changed everything.
For years, I had carried the pain of losing him.
The unanswered questions.
The memories that faded because I was afraid of forgetting.
The funeral I barely remembered.
The relatives who told me he was gone.
All of it.
A lie?
I looked at Garrett.
“Who knew?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Who knew?””
His voice was quiet.
“Your mother.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
My mother.
My own mother.
I felt my heart drop.
“No.””
Garrett nodded.
“She knew.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
I looked at Rachel.
She looked just as stunned.
“Vivian…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
I pushed myself up slightly.
The pain in my body was nothing compared to what was happening inside me.
“My mother told me he died.””
Garrett nodded.
“I know.””
“How?””
He looked at me.
“Because I talked to your father.””
The door opened before I could respond.
A nurse stepped inside.
“Sorry to interrupt.””
Everyone turned.
“There’s a visitor asking to see Vivian.””
I immediately felt tense.
“Who?””
The nurse checked her tablet.
“She says her name is Lena Whitmore.””
The room froze.
Garrett stood immediately.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You know she’s here.””
His face tightened.
“She shouldn’t be.””
I almost smiled.
“You’ve said that about a lot of things.””
The nurse looked confused.
“Should I tell her to leave?””
I thought about it.
Every part of me wanted to say yes.
But another part needed answers.
“No.””
Garrett looked at me.
“Vivian.””
“I want to hear what she has to say.””
“She’s dangerous.””
I looked at him.
“And you’re the expert on secrets?””
He went silent.
The nurse left.
A few minutes later, the door opened again.
Lena walked in.
She looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.
That almost made it worse.
She looked like a normal person.
A tired woman.
A woman carrying her own pain.
She looked at my baby.
Then at me.
“Congratulations.””
I said nothing.
She looked uncomfortable.
“I know you hate me.””
“You’re right.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
“Do you?””
Her eyes moved to Garrett.
“I think you understand more than anyone.””
The tension between them was immediate.
“You lied to her,” Lena said.
Garrett’s face hardened.
“You don’t get to talk about lies.””
She laughed quietly.
“You’re right.””
Then she looked at me.
“I lied too.””
I waited.
“About the baby.””
I didn’t react.
Because I already knew.
“The baby wasn’t Garrett’s.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He wasn’t.””
“Then why?””
Her expression changed.
“Because Garrett owed me.””
I looked at Garrett.
“Owed you?””
Lena nodded.
“Because of what happened in Cedarcliff.””
Garrett stepped forward.
“Stop.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You deserve the truth.””
The same words everyone kept saying.
The truth.
Everyone had a different version.
Lena continued.
“Three years ago, I saw the accident.””
I listened.
“I saw Garrett hit Claire’s car.””
Garrett closed his eyes.
“I also saw someone else there.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Lena looked at me.
“Your father.””
Everything stopped.
Again.
My father.
Always my father.
“What was he doing there?””
Lena shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“But you know he was alive.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes softened.
“Because I didn’t know you.””
That answer hurt.
Because it was true.
She wasn’t the person who lied to me first.
My own family was.
“Why show me now?””
Lena looked at Garrett.
“Because he was going to let you believe your baby wasn’t his.””
Garrett’s voice turned cold.
“You don’t know what I was trying to do.””
“I know exactly what you were trying to do.””
She turned back to me.
“He was going to disappear.””
My heart sank.
“Is that true?””
Garrett didn’t answer.
“Garrett.””
Finally, he said:
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“You were going to leave?””
“I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.””
I looked at him.
“You keep saying that.””
His eyes filled.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made choices without me.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
Lena reached into her bag.
She pulled out an envelope.
Not a phone.
Not a screenshot.
A real envelope.
“I found this last week.””
She handed it to me.
I looked at Garrett.
“What is it?””
He looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
That was the first thing he said that sounded honest.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the signature at the bottom made my entire body freeze.
*Thomas Carter.*
My father.
Alive.
The letter was short.
Only a few paragraphs.
But every word changed my understanding of my life.
Vivian,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I never left because I wanted to.
I was forced to disappear because someone close to you wanted me gone.
My hands shook.
I kept reading.
Your mother knows the truth.
Garrett knows more than he has told you.
And Lena is not the person you should fear.
I stopped.
Slowly, I looked up.
Garrett’s face had lost all color.
Because he knew.
He knew what came next.
I read the final line.
And my heart shattered.
The person who destroyed our family is the same person who has been protecting you from the truth.
I lowered the letter.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
A number I didn’t recognize.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
A man’s voice came through.
Older.
Shaking.
A voice I hadn’t heard in fifteen years.
“Vivian?””
My breath caught.
“Dad?””
The room went completely still.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry it took me this long.””
A tear slipped down my face.
“Where are you?””
There was a pause.
Then his voice dropped.
“Close to the hospital.””
I froze.
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then the words that made my blood run cold:
“Because the person who made me disappear knows I’m coming to tell you everything.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
And for the first time, I understood.
Garrett wasn’t the beginning of the secret.
He was only one piece of it.
May you like
The real story started long before I met him.
And someone had spent years making sure I never found out.
