Chapter 6: The Secret Buried in Cedarcliff
The name on my phone stared back at me.
*Claire.*
A stranger’s name.
A stranger who somehow knew my husband better than I did.
A stranger who knew about Lena.
A stranger who knew about the baby.
A stranger who knew about something that happened three years ago in Cedarcliff.
I looked at Garrett.
For the first time since he walked into my hospital room, he looked afraid.
Not defensive.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
And that terrified me more than any lie he had told.
“What happened in Cedarcliff?””
Garrett didn’t answer.
The silence was unbearable.
“Garrett.””
His eyes moved toward the window.
“Vivian, you need to rest.””
I almost laughed.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Change the subject.””
He looked back at me.
“I’m trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re trying to protect yourself.””
Rachel stood beside me.
“She deserves the truth.””
Garrett looked at his sister.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“I know enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
“Then explain.””
He had no answer.
That was the problem with Garrett.
He always had an explanation ready when he thought he was in control.
But now, with the truth closing in around him, he had nothing.
I looked down at my son.
His eyes were closed.
He was completely unaware that the adults around him were tearing apart the world he had just entered.
“I need to know,” I said quietly.
Garrett’s face softened.
“Vivian.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to decide what I can handle anymore.””
That sentence seemed to hit him.
Because maybe, for the first time, he realized something had changed.
The woman who begged him to drive her to the hospital was gone.
I was still hurt.
Still exhausted.
Still scared.
But I was no longer waiting for him to save me.
The doctor eventually asked Garrett and Rachel to step outside while they checked on me and the baby.
For ten minutes, I was alone.
Ten minutes where I could finally breathe.
But instead of peace, I felt a thousand questions.
Who was Claire?
What happened in Cedarcliff?
Why was Garrett paying child support for a baby that wasn’t his?
Why had Lena come back into his life?
And the question that hurt the most:
How much of my marriage had been fake?
When the door opened again, I expected Garrett.
But it wasn’t him.
It was Rachel.
She looked like she had aged years overnight.
“Where’s Garrett?””
“He left.””
I frowned.
“He left?””
“He said he needed to make a phone call.””
I stared at her.
“He ran.””
Rachel didn’t argue.
Because she knew I was right.
I adjusted the blanket around my son.
“Tell me about Cedarcliff.””
Rachel sat down slowly.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
She looked at her hands.
“Three years ago, Garrett wasn’t the person you know now.””
I almost smiled.
“Apparently, I never knew him.””
Rachel flinched.
But she continued.
“He was different.””
“How?””
“Reckless.””
The word sat between us.
“He was drinking a lot. He was angry all the time.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
Rachel looked away.
“But something happened during a weekend trip to Cedarcliff.””
I waited.
She swallowed.
“Garrett came home one night and he was completely different.””
“What happened?””
“He wouldn’t talk about it.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
She sighed.
“But I saw him destroy his phone.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He smashed it against the driveway.””
“Why?””
“Because someone kept calling.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Who?””
Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked toward the window.
“Claire?””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“You think?””
“I never met her.””
“Then why do you know her name?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Because Garrett said it once.””
“When?””
“The night he came home.””
I waited.
“What did he say?””
Rachel looked at me.
“He said, ‘Claire ruined everything.’”
My stomach tightened.
“Ruined what?””
Rachel whispered:
“I don’t know.””
Later that morning, after my son was taken for routine tests, Garrett finally came back.
But he wasn’t alone.
A woman stood behind him.
She looked to be in her early forties.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
A tired expression that suggested she hadn’t slept in days.
Garrett immediately stepped in front of her.
“Vivian, this is—”
“I know.””
I looked at the woman.
“Claire.””
Garrett froze.
The woman’s face changed.
Not surprise.
Pain.
“You know my name.””
I held my son closer.
“You sent the messages.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Garrett.
Then back at me.
“Because you deserved to know.””
Garrett’s voice turned angry.
“Claire, this is not how we agreed to handle this.””
She laughed bitterly.
“We agreed?””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You mean when you told me to disappear?””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Claire took a breath.
“Three years ago, Garrett and I worked together.””
I looked at Garrett.
“You never mentioned her.””
“I didn’t think it mattered.””
Claire’s expression changed.
“Of course you didn’t.””
Garrett stepped forward.
“Not here.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“Here.””
She looked at me.
“You need to hear everything.””
I felt my pulse racing.
“Go on.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Three years ago, Garrett was involved in an accident in Cedarcliff.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“What kind of accident?””
Garrett immediately interrupted.
“Vivian, you don’t need this right now.””
I looked at him.
“Stop telling me what I need.””
He went quiet.
Claire continued.
“A woman was injured.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
Claire looked at Garrett.
Then said:
“Me.””
The room went still.
I stared at her.
“You were in an accident with my husband?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
Because Garrett had never told me.
Not once.
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“Because he asked me not to tell you.””
I looked at Garrett.
My husband looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
“What happened?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“He was driving.””
The machine beside me beeped faster.
I looked down at my baby.
Then back at her.
“He hurt you?””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“He saved my life.””
That was not what I expected.
Garrett looked up.
“Claire.””
But she continued.
“He pulled me out of the car before it caught fire.””
I was confused.
“Then why hide it?””
Claire looked at Garrett.
“Because the accident wasn’t the secret.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“What was?””
Claire reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Then placed it on the table.
“This.””
Garrett’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
Claire ignored him.
“It’s the reason he left you tonight.””
My heart stopped.
She pushed the envelope toward me.
“I found out what Garrett was really hiding.””
I slowly reached for it.
My hands were shaking.
“What is it?””
Claire looked at me.
“The truth about what happened in Cedarcliff.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
One photograph.
And the second I saw it, I knew my life would never be the same.
It showed Garrett standing beside a car.
A woman was lying injured on the ground.
And beside them…
Was a little girl.
A little girl I recognized.
Because I had seen her before.
In the background of Lena’s old photos.
Claire watched my face.
“You know her.””
I looked up.
My voice barely worked.
“That’s…”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
She whispered the words that made my blood turn cold.
“That’s Lena’s daughter.””
I looked at Garrett.
He was silent.
Because now I understood.
The baby.
The DNA tests.
The secrets.
The lies.
Everything led back to one moment.
One night.
One person.
And then Claire said the sentence that shattered everything:
“Vivian, your husband didn’t abandon you because he wanted to leave.””
May you like
She looked at Garrett.
“He left because someone was about to expose what he did in Cedarcliff.””
