Chapter 9: The Original Owner

The engine started with a sound Maya had heard only once before.

The first time had been that morning.

Then, it had sounded almost beautiful.

Now it sounded alive.

A deep mechanical pulse traveled through the bunker walls.

The floor vibrated beneath Maya's boots.

Her mother stepped backward.

“No.””

The Nightfall system repeated in its calm, emotionless voice.

“Original owner override requested.””

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“Who?””

Evelyn's face had gone completely white.

“I don't know.””

“You do.””

“I don't.””

The bunker lights shifted from white to red.

A warning appeared on every screen.

*ORIGINAL OWNER IDENTIFICATION: 97%*

Preston looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus stared at the display.

“It means the system is searching for its first authorized human.””

“And if it finds them?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Maya's mother did.

“It shuts everyone else out.””

Maya looked at her.

“Everyone?””

“Everyone.””

“Then we have to stop it.””

Her mother shook her head.

“We can't.””

“Why?””

“Because the original owner is already connected.””

Maya's chest tightened.

“Where?””

Her mother looked at the floor.

“Here.””

Everyone became still.

Maya slowly turned.

“Who?””

No one spoke.

Then Owen Whitlock stepped forward.

“It’s me.””

Preston stared at him.

“You?””

Owen nodded.

“I was the first.””

Maya looked at the screens.

The authorization percentage climbed.

*98%*

“You built Nightfall.””

Owen swallowed.

“I funded it.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

“I helped build it.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You lied to him for years.””

Owen looked at her.

“So did you.””

“You conditioned children.””

“I didn't.””

“You approved the testing.””

Owen's face hardened.

“I approved a prototype.””

“A prototype that used them.””

Maya stepped between them.

“Enough.””

The floor shook again.

The Helix engine above them revved.

Maya looked at the timer.

*00:17:43*

“Tell me how to stop it.””

Owen stared at the central console.

“There is only one way.””

“Then do it.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because the override requires the original owner's biometric authorization.””

Maya pointed toward him.

“Then you're standing right here.””

Owen nodded.

“And it won't accept me.””

Preston frowned.

“You said you're the original owner.””

“I am.””

“Then why won't it accept you?””

Owen looked at the screen.

“Because I transferred ownership.””

The room fell silent.

“To whom?”” Maya asked.

Owen didn't answer.

Preston stared at his father.

“Dad.””

Owen finally looked at him.

“To Preston.””

Preston's face drained of color.

“No.””

“It was done years ago.””

“I would've remembered.””

“You were never supposed to.””

Maya stepped closer.

“So the system was built around him.””

“Yes.””

“And me?””

Owen looked at her.

“You were the failsafe.””

Her mother closed her eyes.

Maya felt her stomach twist.

“That’s why you chose us.””

“Yes.””

“Children.””

“I thought—”

“You thought what?””

Owen’s voice broke.

“I thought two children could succeed where grown men had failed.””

Maya stared at him.

“You used us.””

Owen looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer was so simple it was devastating.

Preston stepped toward him.

“You erased my memories.””

“I had to.””

“You made me believe I was free.””

“I wanted you to have a normal life.””

Preston laughed.

“Normal?””

He gestured around the bunker.

“You built a weapon under my company and put it inside my head.””

Owen didn't respond.

Preston's eyes filled with anger.

“You destroyed me.””

A warning flashed.

*99.4%*

Marcus rushed to the console.

“We're out of time.””

Maya moved beside him.

“What can we do?””

“Break the synchronization.””

“How?””

Marcus pointed at Preston and Maya.

“They need to be separated.””

“We're not connected.””

“You are.””

“How?””

He pointed to the biometric screen.

Their pulse patterns were identical.

“Look.””

Maya stared.

Every heartbeat matched.

Every fluctuation.

Every spike.

She looked at her mother.

“You knew.””

Her mother nodded weakly.

“When you were children, they paired your nervous systems.””

“For what?””

“To teach the system what trust looked like.””

Maya stared.

“Trust?””

Her mother swallowed.

“Nightfall was supposed to understand human hesitation by watching two minds make decisions together.””

“And it learned something else.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Her mother's eyes filled with tears.

“That people can be controlled through the things they fear losing.””

The bunker shook.

A violent alarm sounded.

The central screen flashed.

*SYNC INITIATED*

Maya felt a sudden pressure behind her eyes.

A memory hit her.

A white room.

She was six.

Preston was standing across from her.

A red light blinked between them.

A man's voice said:

“Again.””

Little Maya reached for Preston's hand.

He hesitated.

“Again.””

Their hands touched.

The lights turned green.

Then another memory.

Her father stood behind glass.

His face was terrified.

He was shouting.

“Stop!””

Maya gasped and stumbled backward.

Her mother caught her.

“You remembered.””

Maya looked up.

“My father tried to stop it.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

“Your father sabotaged the program.””

“That caused the fire.””

Her mother nodded.

“He burned the facility.””

Maya's breathing stopped.

“He rescued you.””

“And you?””

“I stayed behind.””

“Why?””

“Because someone had to keep them from finding you.””

Maya stared.

“You were never sick.””

“No.””

“They told me you died.””

“I know.””

“And my father disappeared.””

“He was taken.””

Maya looked around.

“By Owen?””

Her mother shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward Owen.

He looked grim.

“They were already inside the company.””

“Who?””

Owen looked at Marcus.

Marcus answered.

“The board.””

Preston frowned.

“What board?””

“The people who own the military contracts.””

Maya stared.

“You mean Nightfall belongs to someone else?””

Owen nodded.

“I've spent eight years trying to get it back.””

“And you used Arkwell to do it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I couldn't destroy the system.””

Maya looked at the timer.

*00:12:01*

“Then we're going to.””

Owen shook his head.

“You don't understand.””

“Explain.””

“If Nightfall detects an unauthorized shutdown, it launches the fail-safe.””

“What fail-safe?””

“The Helix.””

Maya stared.

“The car?””

“Yes.””

“What happens?””

“It begins broadcasting the control signal.””

“To the other vehicles?””

“To every compatible system.””

Preston looked horrified.

“How many?””

“Enough.””

Marcus checked another screen.

“Seventeen minutes is wrong.””

Maya frowned.

“What?””

He pointed.

“The timer above is the bunker countdown.””

“And?””

“The Helix countdown is separate.””

A second timer appeared.

*00:08:16*

Maya felt the blood leave her face.

“It already started.””

“Yes.””

“What do we do?””

Marcus looked toward her.

“Finish what your father started.””

“How?””

He pointed at the central console.

“You don't shut Nightfall down.””

“You disconnect it.””

“What's the difference?””

“Shutdown triggers the fail-safe.””

Maya looked at the system architecture.

“Disconnecting requires two operators.””

Marcus nodded.

“P-01 and M-01.””

Preston stepped forward.

“Tell us what to do.””

Marcus began entering commands.

Maya stood beside Preston.

Her hands were trembling.

“You remember anything?””

Preston nodded.

“Pieces.””

“Me too.””

“Do you remember the room?””

“Yes.””

“The red light?””

“Yes.””

“The phrase?””

Maya looked at him.

“Clear the noise.””

He nodded.

The console displayed two empty authorization fields.

*P-01*

*M-01*

“Place your hands on the panels,” Marcus said.

Maya and Preston did.

The system recognized them instantly.

*SYNC REQUIRED.*

Preston looked at her.

“What happens if we fail?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Maya did.

“We don't.””

They activated the command.

The system resisted.

A surge traveled through the panels.

Maya cried out.

Memories flooded back.

Her father's garage.

Her mother's face.

Preston as a child.

Owen standing behind glass.

Evelyn crying.

Then one memory she had never seen.

Her father speaking directly into a camera.

“Maya, if you're watching this, Nightfall has found you.””

Maya gasped.

Carlos continued.

“You were never the failsafe.””

The console flashed.

*AUTHORIZATION CONFLICT*

Maya looked at Preston.

Her father’s recording continued.

“You were the key.””

She stared at the screen.

“What does that mean?””

Carlos's voice softened.

“And Preston was never the other operator.””

Preston looked at her.

“Then who am I?””

Maya's father's face appeared on the monitor.

“Preston was the lock.””

The system screamed.

Every screen turned black.

Then one final message appeared.

*TRUE OPERATOR IDENTIFIED.*

Maya stared.

A name appeared.

Not hers.

Not Preston’s.

Not Owen’s.

*CARLOS REYES.*

Maya whispered, “He's connected.””

Evelyn stepped backward.

“But Carlos isn't here.””

Marcus looked at the system.

“He doesn't have to be.””

“How?””

The final line appeared.

*REMOTE HUMAN PRESENCE DETECTED.*

Preston stared at the screen.

“Where?””

The coordinates appeared.

Maya recognized them instantly.

Her father's old garage.

She felt ice spread through her chest.

“Dad.””

Evelyn moved toward the console.

“He's inside the original system.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

The screen changed again.

A live camera feed appeared.

A man sat alone in a dark room.

Older.

Bearded.

Worn down by years.

But unmistakable.

Carlos Reyes.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Maya.””

Her knees nearly gave out.

“Dad.””

Carlos smiled sadly.

“I knew you'd find me.””

She moved toward the screen.

“Come out.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because the people who built Nightfall are here with me.””

Maya looked at Owen.

Then at her mother.

“What do you mean?””

Carlos looked away from the camera.

When he looked back, his expression had changed.

“They found your mother.””

Maya's blood froze.

Carlos continued.

“And they found me.””

A shadow moved behind him.

Several figures stepped into view.

One of them was a man Maya had never seen.

The others wore Arkwell security uniforms.

Carlos leaned toward the camera.

“Listen carefully.””

His voice became urgent.

“Do not disconnect the system.””

Maya stared.

“What?””

Carlos looked terrified.

“Because Nightfall isn't trying to control the world.””

He swallowed.

“It's trying to warn it.””

The screen flashed.

A new target appeared.

Thousands of vehicles across the country.

One location highlighted in red.

Washington, D.C.

Then another.

London.

Then another.

Moscow.

Beijing.

New York.

Maya's heart pounded.

“What are they doing?””

Carlos looked directly into the camera.

“They've already activated the first strike.””

A final message appeared.

*HELIX 1 LAUNCH SEQUENCE: 00:03:44*

Then Carlos whispered the words that made everyone in the bunker go still.

“Maya, your job isn't to stop Nightfall.””

May you like

His eyes filled with tears.

“It's to decide who deserves control of it.””
