Chapter 7: My Father Knew the Man Who Betrayed Me
My father didn't answer immediately.
That frightened me more than Julian's accusation.
For most of my life, Rafael Alvarez had been the one person I never needed to question. He had raised me after my mother died, taught me to negotiate my first salary, and reminded me that independence meant nothing if I allowed someone else to make my decisions for me.
He had never told me whom to marry.
He had never demanded that I follow his career advice.
And he had never asked me to explain how I spent my own money.
But now, standing beside our dining table, he looked like a man who had just discovered that a ghost from his past had followed his daughter into her home.
“Dad,” I said again.
“Did you know Adrian before he hired me?””
He removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“Yes.””
The single word landed heavily.
“How long?””
“Long before you joined his company.””
“How long?””
“Almost fifteen years.””
I stepped away from him.
“Fifteen years?””
“Clara, let me explain.””
“You told me Adrian had discovered my work through a recruitment firm.””
“He did.””
“You told me he had no connection to our family.””
“I never said that.””
I stared at him.
“No. You simply let me believe it.””
My father lowered his glasses.
For the first time in my life, I wanted to leave a room before he could finish explaining himself.
But I stayed.
“Start talking.””
He glanced toward the closed bedroom door to make sure Julian wasn't listening.
Then he pulled out a chair.
“Fifteen years ago, Adrian worked for a financial consultancy that advised several property investment companies. One of those companies was involved in a project I was considering financing.””
“Which project?””
“A residential development outside Lisbon. The numbers looked excellent on paper, but the financial forecasts didn't match the construction costs. I refused to invest.””
“And Adrian?””
“He disagreed with my assessment. He believed the development would succeed.””
“What happened?””
“The project collapsed. Investors lost money. Adrian left the consultancy shortly afterward.””
I sat down opposite him.
“And you hired him later?””
“No. I didn't hire him. Years afterward, I discovered that he had joined the technology sector.
By then, he had established a reputation as a capable executive. I knew he was working in your industry, but I didn't know he would eventually become your mentor.””
“You knew he was connected to our family, and you never told me.””
“I didn't think the old disagreement mattered.””
“Apparently, it did.””
My father looked at me with genuine regret.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes, you should have.””
He accepted the rebuke without defending himself.
That somehow made it harder to remain angry.
I had spent the morning discovering that my husband had concealed financial dealings from me. Now I was learning that my father had withheld information because he believed he was protecting me from an irrelevant complication.
Everyone seemed to have a reason for deciding what I could handle.
Everyone except me.
“Did Adrian know you were my father when he hired me?”” I asked.
“I can't say for certain. He may have recognized your name.””
“Did you ever discuss me with him?””
“Only once, after you were promoted. He congratulated me on your success.””
I stared at him.
“You told me you hadn't spoken to him in years.””
“I hadn't. He sent a letter through a mutual acquaintance.””
“And you didn't mention it?””
“I didn't want you to think your achievements had anything to do with me.””
I looked away.
That explanation sounded exactly like my father. He had always been determined to let me build a life that belonged to me.
But the consequences of his silence had followed me into my marriage.
“Did you ever invest in Adrian's businesses?””
“No.””
“Did he approach you about money?””
“Not directly. He contacted my office twice about potential partnerships. I declined both.””
“Why?””
“The proposals were incomplete. I didn't trust the projections.””
A cold thought formed in my mind.
“Were those proposals connected to Julian?””
My father went still.
“I don't know.””
Before either of us could continue, the bedroom door opened.
Julian appeared wearing his coat, holding his phone in one hand and a leather bag in the other.
“I'm going out.””
I turned toward him.
“Where?””
“To see Adrian.””
“No.””
He stared at me.
“Excuse me?””
“Daniel specifically advised you not to contact anyone to coordinate accounts or alter evidence. If you have information about the loan, it needs to be preserved.””
“I'm not going to coordinate anything. I'm going to ask him why he's dragging me into this.””
“Then speak to your lawyer first.””
Julian laughed bitterly.
“You've become very comfortable telling me what I can and can't do.””
“I'm not controlling your movements. I'm telling you that I'm no longer going to help you hide things.””
He walked toward the door.
My father stood.
“Julian, if you leave, take your personal belongings and don't remove any documents that may relate to the disputed transaction.””
Julian turned sharply.
“You don't get to give me orders in my own marriage.””
“No,” my father replied.
“But I can insist that evidence concerning my daughter's affairs be preserved.””
Julian looked at me.
“You're letting him do this?””
I held his gaze.
“I'm not responsible for managing your relationship with my father.””
He opened the door.
Then his phone rang.
Adrian's name appeared on the screen.
Julian answered immediately.
“I'm coming to see you.””
A man's voice responded.
Even from where I stood, I heard three words.
“Don't come here.””
Julian frowned.
“What?””
“Don't come here,” Adrian repeated.
“We need to discuss this somewhere else.””
Julian glanced at me.
“Why?””
“Because the situation has changed.””
“What situation?””
A pause.
Then Adrian said something that made Julian grip the phone harder.
“She's seen the authorization, hasn't she?””
Julian looked directly at me.
I stepped toward him.
“Put it on speaker.””
He turned away.
“Not now.””
I reached for the doorframe, blocking his path without touching him.
“Ask him why my name is on the documents.””
Julian covered the microphone.
“Move.””
“No.””
For a moment, we stared at each other.
Then my father spoke from behind me.
“Julian, you don't have to answer questions from Clara. But if you're leaving, do so without threatening or obstructing anyone.””
Julian's face twisted with frustration.
He returned to the call.
“Adrian, she knows about the authorization. She knows about the loan.””
The voice on the other end became sharper.
“Then you need to tell her what you signed.””
Julian froze.
“What I signed?””
“Yes.””
“You told me that document was only a preliminary agreement!””
“I told you what you needed to know at the time.””
Julian's expression changed so completely that I almost didn't recognize him.
“What did you do?””
Adrian said something too quiet for me to hear.
Julian pulled the phone away from his ear.
“You said I was protected!””
Then he ended the call.
The apartment fell silent.
I stared at him.
“What did he mean by what you signed?””
Julian's mouth opened, but no answer came.
He looked down at his phone.
A new message appeared.
He read it once.
Then again.
His hands began to shake.
“Julian?””
He slowly turned the screen toward me.
The message contained a photograph of a document.
At the top was the name of the development company.
Below it was a list of people involved in the proposed transaction.
Adrian Cole.
Julian Moreau.
And Clara Alvarez.
Beside my name was a figure that made my breath catch.
€2,400,000.
I looked at the photograph again.
“I never agreed to invest that amount.””
“I know,” Julian whispered.
“Then why is my name there?””
“Because Adrian said he could make the financing work if we created the appearance of a stronger investment commitment.””
“We?””
He shut his eyes.
“I thought the document would never be used.””
“What document?””
He opened his eyes again.
“The original agreement.””
Before I could question him further, another message appeared.
This time, it came from Adrian directly.
If Clara has seen the final page, she needs to know that Julian wasn't the person who initiated the transaction.
My father stepped beside me.
I read the message aloud.
Then I looked at Julian.
“Who initiated it?””
He didn't answer.
His phone vibrated again.
Adrian had sent a second message.
Ask your father why he rejected the same investment proposal fifteen years ago.
I turned toward Rafael.
My father had gone pale.
And when he finally spoke, his words changed everything I thought I understood about the men in my life.
“Clara,” he said quietly, “the original proposal wasn't just a bad investment.””
He looked at Julian.
“It was designed to take control of the properties behind it.””
May you like
Then he looked back at me.
“And the person who designed it was Adrian.””
