Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew Too Much
The investigation moved faster than any of us expected.
Within twenty-four hours, Daniel’s perfect military record had become connected to one of the most complicated security breaches in his career.
And somehow…
I was at the center of it.
The person responsible had known everything.
My pregnancy.
The divorce.
The hospital.
The children.
Someone had watched us fall apart.
Someone had helped make it happen.
Daniel sat across from me in the temporary investigation room.
For once, neither of us knew what to say.
The silence between us felt different now.
Before, it was filled with anger.
Now it was filled with everything we had lost.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked up.
Daniel stared at the table.
“I know you’ve heard that before.””
“Yes.””
“But I need to say it.””
I waited.
“I’m sorry I believed the worst about you.””
His voice cracked.
“I’m sorry I let someone convince me that the woman I loved was my enemy.””
I looked away.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Let me finish.””
That was unusual.
Daniel Reynolds had always been confident.
Certain.
Now he sounded like a man finally facing himself.
“I spent eight years telling myself I made the right choice.””
He laughed softly.
“I told myself I was protecting my career.””
He looked toward the hallway where our children were playing with an investigator’s family.
“But I missed their entire lives.””
I didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing I could say.
Some wounds didn’t need words.
They needed time.
The door opened.
An investigator entered.
“Commander Reynolds.””
I stood.
“What did you find?””
He placed a folder on the table.
“The person who accessed Colonel Reynolds’ files was Major Victor Hale.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Hale?””
“Yes.””
The name meant something.
I could tell.
“Who is he?””
Daniel leaned back.
“Someone I trusted.””
Another familiar sentence.
Another betrayal.
“He worked with me for ten years.””
The investigator continued.
“He had access to military records, communications, and personnel files.””
“Why would he do this?””
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was probably worse.
The investigator opened the folder.
“We found financial transfers.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“From where?””
The investigator hesitated.
“Private security companies.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Contractors.””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“So someone paid him.””
The investigator nodded.
“And there’s more.””
He placed another document down.
“This was found in Major Hale’s office.””
Daniel picked it up.
His face changed immediately.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
A photograph.
Of me.
Pregnant.
Walking outside the courthouse.
The picture was taken from a distance.
My blood ran cold.
Someone had been watching me.
The entire time.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.
*Remove the weakness before deployment.*
I looked at Daniel.
His face was full of rage.
“They considered me a weakness.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“They considered your family a weakness.””
Daniel looked devastated.
Because he finally understood.
I wasn’t the thing that ruined his career.
I was the thing someone wanted removed.
That evening, Daniel came to the guest house where we were staying.
The children were asleep.
I was sitting by the window when he knocked.
“Come in.””
He entered slowly.
“You should rest.””
“So should you.””
He smiled faintly.
“Still giving orders.””
“Someone has to.””
For a moment, it felt almost normal.
Almost like before.
Then Daniel looked serious.
“Kesha.””
I looked at him.
“If Major Hale had succeeded…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“What?””
“He wasn’t just trying to separate us.””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“He was trying to erase my connection to you completely.””
I understood.
No family.
No attachments.
No reason to hesitate.
The military version of Daniel would have been easier to control.
“You were supposed to become someone who had nothing.””
He nodded.
“And instead…”
He looked toward the room where our children slept.
“I had everything.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
But then the door opened.
Noah stood there.
“Daddy?””
Daniel immediately turned.
“Hey.””
Noah rubbed his eyes.
“Are you leaving?””
Daniel froze.
I watched the fear return.
The same fear my son carried.
Daniel crouched.
“No.””
Noah studied him.
“You promise?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then back at his son.
“I promise I’ll fight to stay.””
Noah nodded.
Then walked over and hugged him.
I looked away.
Because maybe this was the beginning of something.
Maybe.
But the next morning, we received another message.
Not from Evelyn.
Not from investigators.
From Major Victor Hale.
He had escaped custody.
And he sent only one sentence.
*You think I destroyed your family? Ask Kesha what she was hiding from Daniel.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel stared too.
Then slowly looked at me.
“Kesha?””
I didn’t answer.
Because there was something I had never told him.
Something I had hidden.
Not because I wanted to hurt him.
Because I was trying to protect my children.
May you like
And now…
That secret was coming back.
