Chapter 9: The Woman They Wanted to Arrest

The federal investigator slid the complaint across the table.

My name sat at the top.

*ELENA ROSSI.*

Beneath it were eleven pages of alleged financial crimes.

Unauthorized transfers.

Fraudulent acquisitions.

Employee payments.

Wire activity.

Shell companies.

Every crime Brandon had committed appeared to have my fingerprints on it.

I looked at the investigator.

“This is a lie.””

“I know.””

The words came so quickly that I froze.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is my name on it?””

“Because whoever filed it wants us to believe you did it.””

My father stepped forward.

“Who filed the complaint?””

The investigator looked at him.

“Thomas Vale.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

Dad's expression remained cold.

“What evidence did he submit?””

“Bank records.””

“Anything else?””

“Emails.””

“Signed contracts?””

“Yes.””

“Digital signatures?””

“Yes.””

“Security footage?””

The investigator nodded.

“Enough to make the case look credible.””

I stared at him.

“Look credible?””

“Yes.””

“Then why aren't you arresting me?””

“Because the evidence is too perfect.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

The investigator continued.

“Every transaction traces back to Elena's credentials.””

“Which were stolen.””

“We know.””

“Every document contains my signature.””

“We know.””

“Then what proves I'm innocent?””

He placed another file on the table.

“This.””

I opened it.

A forensic report.

It compared my genuine digital signature with the signatures used in the fraudulent documents.

They looked identical.

But the metadata was different.

Dad read it.

“Copied certificate.””

The investigator nodded.

“Someone cloned Ms. Rossi's signing credentials.””

I exhaled.

“So the documents are fake.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Thomas file the complaint?””

“To create leverage.””

My father nodded.

“He wants Elena to settle.””

The investigator looked at me.

“Exactly.””

“What kind of settlement?””

“He wants you to sign over the company.””

My stomach dropped.

“To whom?””

“Hayes Capital Advisory.””

Of course.

The entire scheme suddenly became clear.

Steal the money.

Forge my signatures.

Create debts.

Make me look guilty.

Then offer me a way out.

Give up my company.

Or go to prison.

Brandon had built the perfect trap.

Except he'd made one mistake.

He had underestimated my father.

Dad turned to the investigator.

“How much evidence do you have against Thomas?””

“Enough to interview him.””

“Then do it.””

“We need more.””

“You'll get it.””

The investigator looked at the flash drive.

“Is that the recording?””

Mara nodded.

He took it carefully.

“This changes things.””

Brandon suddenly stood.

“You can't use that.””

The investigator looked at him.

“Why not?””

“It's illegally recorded.””

Mara's face went pale.

“I recorded it in a private office.””

“Without consent.””

“That's irrelevant,” Dad said.

The investigator shook his head.

“Not necessarily.””

He looked at Brandon.

“Especially if the recording is corroborated by independent evidence.””

Brandon's confidence disappeared.

The investigator continued.

“And we already have some.””

He opened another folder.

“Bank logs show Thomas Vale communicated with Northstar's registered agent.””

Mara's eyes widened.

The investigator turned to her.

“You're Mara Whitfield.””

She nodded.

“You've been cooperating?””

“Yes.””

“Since when?””

Mara looked at me.

“Since last night.””

The investigator nodded.

“Good.””

Brandon slammed his hand on the table.

“This is ridiculous.””

Security moved closer.

He pointed at me.

“She doesn't own that company.””

Everyone froze.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Brandon smiled.

“You heard me.””

The investigator frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Brandon leaned back.

“Ask her father.””

I turned to Dad.

“What does he mean?””

Dad said nothing.

Brandon laughed.

“Tell her.””

“Brandon,” Dad warned.

“Tell your daughter where her company came from.””

My voice shook.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“When this was over.””

“This?””

He lowered his eyes.

“The investigation.””

“Which investigation?””

“The one that started before you were born.””

I stared at him.

The investigator stepped back.

“Mr. Rossi, I think we need to discuss this.””

Dad nodded.

But I couldn't look away from him.

“Did my mother steal the money?””

“No.””

“Did she launder it?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Did she use it to start my company?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything I'd built suddenly felt contaminated.

Dad stepped toward me.

“Elena, listen to me.””

I pulled away.

“You lied to me.””

“I protected you.””

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother wanted you to have something clean.””

“Clean?””

He looked devastated.

“She spent the rest of her life trying to make it clean.””

I shook my head.

“Then why did Richard come after me?””

“Because he believed the money still belonged to him.””

“And Brandon?””

“Brandon believed the same thing.””

I looked toward Brandon.

“You knew.””

He smiled.

“I knew enough.””

“What did you want?””

“The company.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother built it with stolen money.””

I stared at him.

“So you thought you could steal it back?””

“Not steal.””

He smiled.

“Recover.””

Dad's voice became icy.

“You murdered the truth long before you touched her company.””

Brandon's smile disappeared.

“What did you say?””

Dad stepped forward.

“Richard Hayes didn't die naturally.””

The room fell silent.

Brandon stared at him.

“What?””

“Your father was murdered.””

Brandon's face went white.

“You're lying.””

“I investigated his death.””

“You told everyone it was a heart attack.””

“It was made to look like one.””

Brandon shook his head.

“Who killed him?””

Dad looked at me.

Then at Brandon.

“Your father was killed by someone who knew about the original money.””

Brandon's voice cracked.

“Who?””

Dad didn't answer.

The investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Rossi, are you saying Richard Hayes's death was connected to this fraud?””

“Yes.””

“Do you have evidence?””

“I have records.””

“Where?””

Dad reached into his briefcase.

“Somewhere Brandon never thought to look.””

He pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was yellow with age.

Across the front was handwritten:

*For Elena — when she is old enough.*

My mother's handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

“Why do you have that?””

“She gave it to me before she died.””

I stared at the envelope.

“You never opened it?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“She told me not to.””

I took it.

My fingers trembled as I opened the flap.

Inside was one handwritten letter.

I unfolded it.

The first line made my heart stop.

*Elena, if you're reading this, someone has finally come looking for the money.*

I read the next line.

*And if that person is a Hayes, do not trust him.*

I looked up at Brandon.

He was staring at the letter.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked genuinely frightened.

I kept reading.

*Your father will tell you that I made terrible mistakes. He is right. But there is one thing he doesn't know.*

My eyes moved to the next paragraph.

*The money that started your company was never Richard Hayes's money.*

I stopped.

Dad's face went pale.

I looked at him.

“Dad…”

He whispered, “Keep reading.””

The next sentence was underlined twice.

*It belonged to someone else.*

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

The answer was written beneath it.

A name.

One I'd never expected to see.

*Thomas Vale.*

I looked at my father.

Then at the investigator.

Then at Brandon.

Nobody spoke.

Until the investigator's phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked directly at me.

“Ms. Rossi…”

“What?””

“The bank just confirmed something.””

“What?””

“The $11.4 million wasn't stolen from your company.””

I stared at him.

“Then where did it come from?””

He swallowed.

“It was deposited into your company years ago.””

“By whom?””

He looked at the letter in my hand.

“Thomas Vale.””

My father slowly sat down.

Brandon stopped breathing.

And I realized the entire story I'd believed about my company, my mother, my father, and my ex-husband was about to collapse.

Because if Thomas had owned the original money…

May you like

then Brandon hadn't been stealing from me.

He had been stealing from the person who started the entire scheme.
