Chapter 14 - THE ENEMY STRIKES

The mansion stood dark and silent when we arrived. No lights burned in the windows. No sound came from within. I held Lily’s hand tightly as we walked up the steps.
The front door stood slightly ajar. Waiting.
I pushed it open. The foyer was dimly lit by a single lamp on the entry table. Daniel stood beneath the chandelier. Martha stood beside him. Both looked pale and tense.
Daniel stepped forward. “Thank you for coming.”
“Why did you ask me to bring Lily?” I kept my voice steady, keeping Lily slightly behind me.
“Because she has a right to hear this too,” Daniel said gravely. “Whatever happens… she should know the truth.”
Martha stepped forward, holding a folded piece of paper. “We found this. Hidden in the study. Behind the bookshelf. Grace hid it there years ago. We didn’t know it existed until tonight.”
She handed it to me.
I unfolded it. Grace’s handwriting. But this was different. Dated five years before she died. Long before she knew she was ill. Long before any of this began.
I began to read aloud.
**“If you are reading this, then everything I feared has come to pass. There is a man. A man who will stop at nothing to control this family’s wealth. He is not a Holloway. He is not related to us by blood. But he has married into this family. And he has been destroying us from within for generations.”**
My breath caught.
**“He is Evelyn’s brother. My uncle by marriage. Richard. He has been manipulating Daniel since boyhood. He has been guiding Sarah. He has been threatening Martha. He is the one who ordered my death. And he will not stop until Lily is dead too.”**
I looked up, stunned. “Evelyn has a brother named Richard?”
Daniel nodded, his face grave. “Evelyn’s younger brother. Richard Vance. He was always in the background. Quiet. Wealthy. Influential. But Grace was right—he has been pulling every string. He raised Daniel. He advised Sarah. He controlled everything.”
“And no one ever mentioned him?”
“Because he wanted it that way,” Martha said quietly. “He prefers the shadows. He uses other people to do his bidding. Sarah was his tool. Daniel was his puppet. I was his hostage. But Richard… Richard is the monster.”
I looked back at the letter. Grace had written the name clearly. Richard Vance.
**“Richard will tell you he is protecting the family. He will tell you he loves Lily. Do not believe him. He wants her dead. Because as long as Lily lives, he cannot inherit. She stands between him and everything he desires. Watch him. Trust no one. And above all—keep Lily far away from him.”**
The letter ended with a single line, written in a trembling hand:
**“He will come for her on her first day of school.”**
My blood ran cold. Lily’s first day of school. The day Evelyn tore the papers. The day someone tried to withdraw her enrollment. The day everything began.
Richard had been there. Orchestrating it all.
“He knew,” I whispered. “Grace knew exactly when he would strike.”
Daniel nodded. “She tried to warn me. She tried to tell me Richard was dangerous. But I didn’t believe her. He was my mentor. My father figure. I thought he loved me.”
“He used you,” I said. “Just like he used everyone else.”
“And now,” Martha said, “he knows we are getting close. That is why he forged your signature. That is why he accessed the trust. He is preparing to take everything. And then… he will eliminate us one by one.”
A sound came from upstairs. Heavy. Slow. Deliberate. Footsteps.

We all froze.
Daniel drew in a sharp breath. “He’s here.”
