Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

The next morning, I received official notice. Sarah was being held without bail. The preliminary hearing was scheduled in two weeks. The prosecution felt confident they had enough evidence to secure a conviction on every charge—conspiracy, fraud, manslaughter, blackmail.

But that anonymous call kept playing in my mind. Sarah wasn’t the one in charge. She was only the messenger.

If Sarah had a superior—someone even more powerful, more hidden, more dangerous—then Lily was still at risk. I was still at risk. And Daniel and Martha… they were walking targets.

I called the lead investigator on the case. “Sarah Whitman had accomplices. Possibly someone above her. Did she name anyone during questioning?”

There was a pause on the other end. “Emma—Sarah refuses to speak. She sits in her cell and smiles. She says nothing. We have offered her immunity. We have offered her witness protection. She simply says nothing.”

“She’s protecting someone,” I said. “Someone powerful enough to guarantee her safety even from prison.”

“That is what worries us,” the investigator admitted. “Until we find out who that is… none of you are truly safe.”

Later that day, I visited Sarah in prison. I sat across from her in the visiting room, separated by thick glass. She looked calm. Almost bored.

“Why won’t you tell us?” I asked. “Who is behind all of this?”

Sarah leaned close to the glass. Her voice was soft, but every word was clear. “You think you’ve won. You think because I’m sitting here, everything is over. But you haven’t even begun to understand the game.”

“Tell me who you work for,” I said. “Tell me and I will help you.”

Sarah laughed. “You cannot help me. And you cannot stop them. They are everywhere. They know everything. And they will not let Lily live.”

“Why?” I demanded. “What has a five-year-old child done to deserve this?”

“Because she is Grace’s daughter,” Sarah said simply. “And Grace stood in their way. So now Lily must pay the price.”

“Grace stood in whose way?”

Sarah leaned back. “Figure it out yourself. You have the clues. Grace left them for you. But be warned—once you know the truth… you will wish you never did.”

She stood up. “Visiting hours are over. And Emma—don’t trust anyone. Not even the people you saved.”

She walked away, leaving me sitting there with a cold knot in my chest. Not even the people you saved.

She meant Daniel. She meant Martha.

But that was impossible. Martha had been held hostage. Daniel had been manipulated. They were victims.

Unless… unless they had been playing me all along. Unless their confessions, their remorse, their willingness to cooperate—had all been part of a deeper plan.

I left the prison with my head spinning. Sarah’s words had planted a seed of doubt. And doubt, once planted, grows fast.

That evening, the attorney handling the trust called me. His voice was grave.

“Emma—someone has accessed the trust accounts. Large sums have been moved. Authorized by Daniel.”

I froze. “That’s impossible. Daniel has no signing authority. Grace revoked his access.”

“Someone reinstated it. Using legal documents filed three days ago. Signed by you.”

“By me?”

“Your signature. Witnessed by Martha.”

The world tilted. “That is a forgery.”

“I believe you. But legally… until we prove it… Daniel has full access to everything.”

I ended the call and sat in the dark. Someone had forged my signature. Someone had used Martha’s name as witness. Someone had given Daniel control of Lily’s entire inheritance.

Had they done it together? Had they been playing me all along? Had their remorse, their tears, their promises—all been a performance to gain my trust so they could steal everything Grace had left Lily?

And if that was true… then who was the mastermind? Who was pulling their strings now?

My phone buzzed. A text message from Daniel.

**Meet me at the mansion. Now. It’s urgent. And bring Lily.**

My heart hammered. Bring Lily. Why would he ask me to bring Lily unless…

I stood up, trembling. I had a choice to make.

I could run. Take Lily and vanish. Start over somewhere new. Leave everything behind—the money, the house, the trust. Save ourselves.

Or I could go. Face Daniel. Face whatever was waiting. And find out the truth—once and for all.

If I ran, I would never know. I would spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder. Lily would grow up knowing only fear.

But if I went… I might be walking straight into a trap. Set by the man I had forgiven. Set by the woman I had freed.

Grace’s voice echoed in my mind. Save them both. And then—save Lily.

She had written that. Before she died. She had known this moment would come. She had known I would have to choose.

I walked to Lily’s room. She was sleeping peacefully. I sat beside her bed and watched her breathe.

I had promised Grace I would protect her daughter. At any cost. Even if it meant walking into the lion’s den.

I kissed Lily’s forehead. “Wake up, baby. We have to go.”

She rubbed her eyes. “Where are we going?”

“To see your father.”

“Is he in trouble?”

May you like

“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “But we are going to find out.”

I took her hand. We walked out into the night. Toward the mansion. Toward whatever was waiting. Toward the choice that would define the rest of our lives.
