Chapter 15 - THE DISAPPEARANCE

Forty-eight hours later, Inspector Torres sent the file.

Voss had moved three times in Paraguay. He had used false names, paid cash, avoided banks. But Elena had left a trail. Small things—a phone call made from a borrowed device, a doctor’s visit under a half-true name, a prescription filled at a pharmacy in a small border town.

David traced the pattern. He plotted the locations on a map. And then he saw it—she was circling. Keeping near the border. Never going deep into the country. Waiting for a chance to run.

And then the trail ended.

The last known location was a remote farmhouse outside a tiny town. A neighbor had seen a woman matching Elena’s description walking near the road. That was four days earlier.

After that—nothing.

No calls. No purchases. No sightings.

David stared at the map until his eyes burned.

“She’s gone,” he said quietly. “She escaped. Or Voss moved her. Or…”

He did not finish the sentence.

That evening, a single email arrived. Sent from a disposable account, no name, no return address.

The subject line: SHE’S SAFE.

The body contained three lines:

**He took the baby. Left me behind. I’m hiding. Don’t come looking for me. I love you. Always.**

David read it again. And again.

“Elena wrote this,” he said, his voice shaking. “But she wouldn’t have signed it ‘always.’ Not like this. Not so formally.”

“Voss made her write it,” I said, horror rising. “To scare you off. To make you think she’s safe… and that she doesn’t want to be found.”

“Or worse.” David looked up, his face pale. “He took the baby. Separated them. So she can’t run. Can’t fight. Can’t call for help. Because if she does… he hurts our child.”

He stood up. He began packing a bag.

“David, you can’t go alone,” I said.

“I have to.” He did not look at me. “If Voss has the baby… Elena has no way to reach me. No way to fight back. She’s trapped. And she believes I’ve abandoned her.”

He zipped the bag shut and set it by the door.

“She’s out there somewhere,” David said. “Alone. Hurt. And believing that I stopped looking for her.”

“Torres can get men—”

“Men take time. Warrants take time. And Voss knows that.” David picked up his passport and the folded map. “He’s counting on me to wait. To follow the rules. To let him disappear.”

He paused at the door and looked back at me.

“I’m not waiting anymore,” he said. “I’m going to find her. And I’m going to bring my child home.”
