Chapter 14 - VOSS STRIKES BACK

Three days later, the retaliation began.

It started quietly. David’s bank accounts were frozen—alleged irregularities, a judge’s order signed by none other than the same disgraced Perez, now practicing privately in Paraguay. Then our security firm received a threat—pull their guards or face consequences. They pulled them.

Then came the phone calls. Every hour. Every night. Unknown numbers. Heavy breathing. Silence.

And then one morning, David received a package.

It arrived by courier, no return address. Inside lay a single gold earring.

Elena’s.

David recognized it instantly. He had given it to her on their first anniversary.

A note was taped to the back. Voss’s handwriting, jagged and angry:

**BACK OFF. OR NEXT TIME IT WILL BE HER FINGER. OR THE BABY. STOP CHASING ME, AND PERHAPS I SPARE YOUR BRAT.**

David gripped the earring until his knuckles turned white. He did not cry. He did not shout. He simply walked to the fireplace, dropped the note into the flames, and watched it burn.

“He’s losing control,” David said. “He’s desperate. That means Elena is fighting back. She’s making it hard for him to watch her. Harder to sleep. Harder to keep her hidden.”

“David… he’s threatening your child.”

“Which means he knows I’m close.” David turned to me, his eyes hard and bright. “He wouldn’t threaten the baby unless he fears I’ll take it from him. Which means Elena has reached him. She’s made him afraid.”

He picked up his phone and dialed Inspector Torres.

“I need everything,” David said when she answered. “Every transaction. Every phone call. Every person Voss has spoken to in Paraguay in the last month. Trace every number. Find out where he is.”

“David… it’s dangerous,” Torres said. “He’s escalating. He’s making threats. If you push him too hard—”

“If I don’t, he kills her.” David’s voice dropped to a whisper. “He killed his own brother. He tried to kill his own niece. He will kill my child to hurt me. I have no choice but to push harder.”

Torres was silent. Then she said quietly:

“I’ll have the data in two hours. But David… be ready. If you find him… there will be no one to help you. No warrants. No police. No backup. You’ll be on your own.”

“I know,” David said. “That’s what he expects. And that’s exactly how I’ll find him.”
