Chapter 15 - THE FRIEND FROM THE PAST

I did not sleep.

I sat by the window, the phone still warm in my hand, Evelyn’s voice ringing in my ears.

Ask him who his best friend really was.

I thought back five years. The separation. The hurt. The nights I had spent crying. And the man who had been there—Daniel’s best friend since childhood. The one who had comforted me. Who had told me Daniel still loved me. Who had said he only wanted to help.

Julian.

Julian, who had disappeared shortly after I returned to Daniel. Who had moved across the country and cut off all contact. Who had never come to visit. Not even once.

I stood up and walked into the hallway. Daniel was asleep on the sofa. He woke when I stood beside him.

“Emily?” He sat up quickly. “What’s wrong?”

“Julian,” I said. “Where is he?”

Daniel went still. The color drained from his face.

“Why?”

“Evelyn mentioned him,” I said. “She said… she said Julian is Noah’s real father.”

Daniel closed his eyes. He leaned forward, head in his hands.

“Daniel,” I said, my voice trembling. “Tell me the truth. Did you know?”

He was silent for a long time. Then he spoke, his voice barely audible.

“I suspected,” he said. “For years. But I never told you. I never wanted to know for certain.”

My heart broke. “You knew?”

“I saw the way he looked at you,” Daniel said. “I saw the night you came back. I saw the dates line up. And then Arthur did the first test… and it confirmed what I had feared. But I chose to believe you didn’t know. I chose to believe it was a mistake. And I chose to love Noah anyway.”

Tears streamed down my face. “I didn’t know, Daniel. I swear it. Julian told me you had moved on. That you didn’t want me anymore. He said he was just being a friend. And then… one thing led to another. And I felt terrible. And I came back to you. And I told you everything. And you said—you said it didn’t matter.”

“I meant it,” Daniel said, reaching for me. “I meant it, Emily. I loved you. And I loved that baby. Nothing else mattered.”

“But Arthur did a second test,” I said. “And it said Noah was yours.”

Daniel looked up. “Because Arthur found Julian. He tracked him down. He confronted him. And Julian confessed. He said he had manipulated you. That he had lied about me. That he had… he had drugged your drink.”

A sob tore from my throat.

“Arthur forced Julian to submit to a DNA test,” Daniel continued. “And then Arthur swapped the samples. He put Julian’s name on the first test. And yours and mine on the second. He wanted to test me. He wanted to see if I would love Noah even if I believed he wasn’t mine. And then… he intended to destroy Julian’s sample forever. To protect you. To protect Noah. To give us a future.”

“But Evelyn found out,” I whispered. “She found the original sample. She kept it.”

Daniel nodded slowly. “She told me yesterday. She said she had Julian’s DNA. She said if we did not do exactly as she ordered… she would reveal everything. She would tell Noah. She would tell the world. She would destroy all of us.”

I sank onto the floor beside him. “What do we do?”

Daniel took my hand. “We tell the truth. All of it. Even the parts that hurt. Because Evelyn will tell it anyway. And she will tell it like we are the villains.”

He stood up and pulled me to my feet. He held me by the shoulders and looked me in the eye.

“Noah is my son,” Daniel said firmly. “I do not care what any piece of paper says. I loved him before I knew any of this. I loved him when I thought he was yours and mine. I loved him when I thought he was yours and Julian’s. And I will love him until the day I die. Nothing Evelyn says will ever change that.”

I threw my arms around him and wept.

The next morning, we called Collins. We told him everything.

Collins listened in silence. When we finished, he leaned back in his chair.

“Evelyn has Julian’s DNA,” he said. “She can prove he is the biological father. But will it change anything legally? Arthur legally adopted Noah. He transferred the fortune to him legally. Daniel legally adopted him too.”

“But morally?” I asked. “In the eyes of the court? In the eyes of the public?”

“Morally,” Collins said, “Evelyn will try to paint you as a fallen woman. Daniel as a fool. Noah as a bastard. But legally… none of it matters. Arthur knew. He arranged it. He protected Noah regardless of blood. That was his explicit wish. And a judge will respect that.”

“But Evelyn will tell Noah,” I said. “She will tell him Julian’s story.”

“Then we find Julian first,” Daniel said. “And we make him tell the truth. About what he did. About the lies he told. About the drink. About everything.”

Collins pulled out his phone. “I will find him. I will bring him here. And we will make him testify against Evelyn. Because if she has been holding this over all of you… she has been conspiring with him all along.”

He made the call. He spoke quietly. Then he hung up.

“Julian is already here,” Collins said. “He has been staying at a hotel in town. Evelyn brought him in. She intends to present him at the next hearing as the true father. To claim Noah belongs to him.”

Daniel stood up. His face was hard. Resolute.

“Then we go to him,” Daniel said. “And we make him choose. Stand with Evelyn… or face the consequences of what he did.”

We drove to the hotel. Marcus came with us. We found Julian in his room—pacing, nervous, a man who knew he had walked into a trap.

When he saw us, he froze.

“Daniel,” he said. “I didn’t want—”

“Shut up,” Daniel said. He stepped inside and closed the door. “You lied to her. You manipulated her. You drugged her drink. And then you ran away. And now… you have come back to help Evelyn destroy us.”

Julian looked at me. His eyes were filled with shame.

“I never meant to hurt anyone,” he said. “I loved you, Emily. I thought if I could just be with you… you would learn to love me too. But I was wrong. And then Evelyn found me. She threatened to put me in prison. She said if I did not help her… she would ruin my life.”

“So you chose to help her ruin ours,” Marcus said.

Julian hung his head. “She told me she only wanted what was best for Noah. She said she would give him a better life. With his real father.”

“His real father?” Daniel stepped forward. “You think you are his father? You think a single night of lies and betrayal makes you a father? I have changed his diapers. I have held him when he was sick. I have read him bedtime stories. I have loved him every single day for five years. You are nothing to him. And you will never be anything.”

Julian looked at me. “Emily… I am sorry. I am so, so sorry.”

“Then help us,” I said. “Tell the truth. About Evelyn. About what she threatened. About everything.”

Julian hesitated. Then he reached into his bag and pulled out an envelope.

“She gave this to me,” he said. “It contains everything. The DNA results. The story. The dates. She told me to hand it to the judge at the hearing.”

He handed it to me.

I opened it. Inside were the original DNA results. And a letter written by Evelyn, instructing Julian exactly what to say. Exactly how to paint me as the villain. Exactly how to take Noah away.

And beneath his instructions… there was a note. In Evelyn’s handwriting. Addressed to Julian.

Once we have the boy and the fortune… you will disappear. No loose ends. No witnesses.

I held it up. “She was going to betray you, Julian. Just like she betrays everyone.”

Julian read the note. His face went white.

“She never intended to share anything,” I said. “She intended to use you… and then get rid of you. Just like she got rid of everyone else who stood in her way.”

Julian sank onto the bed. He looked at Daniel. At me. At Marcus.

“What do I do?” he whispered.

“Tell the truth,” Daniel said. “All of it. Testify against her. Help us put her away. And then… leave. Start over. And never come near my family again.”

Julian nodded slowly. He folded the note and put it in his pocket.

“I will do it,” he said. “I will tell them everything. And I will accept whatever punishment I deserve.”

We left the hotel. Outside, the sun was setting. Daniel took my hand.

“Whatever happens,” he said, “whatever the judge says, whatever anyone calls him… Noah is my son. Nothing will ever change that.”

“I know,” I said. “And so will he.”
