Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE THAT BROKE US

The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

Noah had been sleeping beside me all night. The door had been locked from the inside. The windows bolted. And yet someone had stood there—in the room—while we slept. And taken a photograph.

I looked at Daniel. He was standing in the doorway, still in his nightshirt, staring at the photo. His face drained of color.

“Who else has a key?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Only me,” Daniel said. “And Marcus. And the master key in the safe—which no one has touched.”

I looked from one brother to the other.

Daniel, who had spent his life obeying his mother. Who had stood silent while she humiliated his son. Who had only just begun to fight back.

Marcus, the hidden son. Who had been raised on stories of Evelyn’s greatness. Who had given us evidence—but who still spoke of her with sorrow in his voice.

Evelyn’s words echoed in my mind: One of them is still mine.

“Emily,” Marcus said, reaching toward me. “I would never—”

“Stay back,” I said. I stepped between him and the bed where Noah lay sleeping. “Both of you. Stand there.”

“Emily, this is a setup,” Daniel said. “Someone is trying to turn us against each other.”

“Is it working?” I asked. “Because right now, I don’t know which one of you to trust.”

Marcus flinched. “I gave you everything. I gave you the diary. I gave you the receipts. I stood against my own mother.”

“Or you gave us enough to make us trust you,” I said. “While continuing to do her bidding.”

Marcus went silent. He looked down, his jaw tightening.

“And you, Daniel,” I said, turning to him. “You spent your whole life protecting her. You watched her poison Arthur and said nothing. You watched her humiliate your son and said nothing. How do I know you aren’t still protecting her? How do I know this isn’t all part of the plan?”

Daniel looked at me—hurt, but not angry. “You don’t. Not yet. But I will prove it. I will find out who took that photo. If it was one of us… I will find out which one. And I will stop them.”

We spent the next three days in a state of unbearable tension. Marcus patrolled the grounds but slept in the gatehouse. Daniel stayed in the hallway outside our room at night. I kept the door locked and chained. I slept with a letter opener beneath my pillow.

The day of the hearing arrived.

Collins came to the house early. He reviewed everything—the recording, the journal, the lab results, Marcus’s diary.

“The evidence is overwhelming,” Collins said. “But Evelyn’s attorney will argue it was all obtained illegally. That Arthur was mentally unwell. That you manipulated him, Emily. That Marcus is lying out of spite.”

“She will try to tear us apart,” I said. “One by one.”

“Which is why we must stand together,” Collins said. “No matter what she says in that courtroom.”

We arrived at the courthouse together. Daniel and Marcus walked on either side of me. Noah stayed with Mrs. Collins—safe, far away from the chaos.

Inside the courtroom, Evelyn sat at the defense table. She looked composed. Elegant. In control. When she saw us enter, she smiled—a cold, knowing smile.

The hearing began. Her attorney spoke first. He called Arthur’s will a fraud. Called me a gold digger. Called Marcus a disgruntled employee seeking revenge.

Then it was our turn. Collins introduced the evidence. The recording. The journal. The lab results. Clara’s testimony. Hale’s written statement.

The judge listened carefully. Evelyn watched—silent, calm, her eyes flicking from face to face.

And then she stood up.

“Your Honor,” she said, her voice clear and steady. “All of this is irrelevant. Because there is one fact no one has mentioned. One fact that invalidates every single document Arthur Bennett signed.”

She turned and looked directly at Daniel.

“Tell him,” she said.

The courtroom went silent. All eyes turned to Daniel.

Daniel stood slowly. He looked at Evelyn. Then at me. His face was pale. His hands trembled.

“Tell him what?” Collins asked.

Evelyn smiled. “Tell him why Arthur changed his will. Tell him what you did.”

Daniel closed his eyes. When he opened them, he looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Emily… I need you to listen to me very carefully.”

“Daniel?” My heart sank.

“Arthur did not change his will because he found out about the poison,” Daniel said. “He changed it because I told him something. Something I had kept secret for five years.”

May you like

He paused. He took a breath.

“Emily… Noah is not my son.”
