Chapter 9: The Man Behind The Disappearance

I didn't move.

I couldn't.

My mother's words repeated in my head.

*Daniel was the reason your father never came back.*

The same Daniel who had sat across from me at dinner.

The same Daniel who had laughed when my daughter whispered she was hungry.

The same Daniel who had told me I was making a big deal out of nothing.

I stared at my mother.

“What did you say?””

She looked like she regretted speaking.

“Connor…”

“No.””

My voice was low.

“You don't get to say something like that and then stop.””

Paige stepped closer.

“Diane, explain.””

My mother looked between us.

For once, she looked like someone who had lost control of the story.

“Daniel found your father.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“How many years?””

She swallowed.

“About twelve.””

I felt a strange emptiness in my chest.

Twelve years.

My father had been out there.

Alive.

Somewhere.

And someone knew.

“Why?””

My mother sat down slowly.

“Because Daniel wanted to protect Melissa.””

I stared.

“From what?””

“The truth.””

I almost laughed.

The truth.

That word had become almost meaningless in my family.

Everyone claimed to protect someone.

Everyone claimed they were doing the right thing.

And somehow, I was always the person left carrying the damage.

“Start from the beginning.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I didn't know Daniel would go that far.””

“That is not an answer.””

She looked at me.

“When Melissa married him, she told him everything.””

I frowned.

“Everything?””

“About the money. About Dad. About what happened.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“So Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he stayed quiet.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother looked down.

“Because he thought your father would expose him.””

I froze.

“Expose him for what?””

She didn't answer.

That was when I knew.

“Mom.””

Her voice dropped.

“Daniel had financial problems.””

I looked at Paige.

She understood immediately.

“The money.””

My mother nodded.

“Some of the money from your account was used to help him too.””

I felt sick.

Not because of the money.

Because of the betrayal.

Daniel wasn't family.

Not originally.

He married into it.

And somehow he became another person who decided my life was something he could control.

“What did he do to Dad?””

My mother hesitated.

“He found him.””

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

“You're lying.””

She looked away.

I stepped closer.

“You know.””

Her silence answered.

Paige spoke calmly.

“Diane, if Daniel threatened someone, that is not something you can hide anymore.””

My mother looked exhausted.

“Your father moved to Oregon.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“Daniel found his business.””

“How?””

“He hired someone.””

My stomach tightened.

“A private investigator?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked ashamed.

“To find out if your father was planning to come back.””

I stared.

“And?””

“He was.””

The room went quiet.

My heart sank.

“He was planning to come back?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

My mother's eyes filled.

“After he learned Connor had turned eighteen.””

I stopped.

My eighteenth birthday.

I remembered it.

I remembered looking at the phone.

Waiting for a call that never came.

I remembered telling myself I didn't care.

I remembered lying.

“What happened?””

My mother whispered:

“Daniel met him first.””

The pieces began fitting together.

“What did he tell him?””

“I don't know exactly.””

“You don't?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“But I know your father stopped trying after that.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Because of Daniel.””

“Yes.””

I turned away.

The anger was too big.

Too complicated.

For years, I had blamed my father.

Then my mother.

Now Daniel.

Everyone had held a piece of my life hostage.

Everyone had decided what I deserved to know.

My phone rang.

Melissa.

I answered immediately.

“Tell me you knew.””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

Her voice broke.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“How long?””

“Not everything.””

“How long?””

“A few years.””

I looked at my mother.

She couldn't meet my eyes.

“Daniel found Dad.””

“I know.””

Melissa went silent.

“Mom told you.””

“Yes.””

A shaky breath.

“Connor…”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I am done hearing excuses.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

She sounded different.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone was scared.””

A pause.

“You know what the difference is?””

“What?””

“You all got to be scared together.””

My voice cracked.

“I was the only one who didn't know what was happening.””

Silence.

Then Melissa whispered:

“You're right.””

That surprised me.

I didn't know what to do with someone admitting I was right.

“I want to know everything.””

“I'll tell you.””

“Where is Daniel?””

Another pause.

“He's at his office.””

“Why?””

“He's trying to sell his company.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That you found the account.””

I looked at Paige.

She heard.

“Why would he care?””

Melissa's voice dropped.

“Because there are records.””

My heart started racing.

“What records?””

“The ones proving where the money went.””

I looked back at the notebook.

“Daniel's name.””

“Yes.””

“Anything else?””

Melissa hesitated.

“Connor…”

“What?””

“There is one more thing.””

I waited.

“Dad wasn't just planning to come back.””

“What was he planning?””

“He was planning to expose Mom.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked terrified.

“For the money?””

“No.””

Melissa's voice became quieter.

“For the way she used you.””

The room went still.

“What does that mean?””

“She had been creating a story for years.””

“What story?””

“That you were the responsible child.””

I frowned.

“That sounds good.””

“No.””

Melissa swallowed.

“She used it against you.””

I didn't understand.

“She told everyone you were strong. Independent. Mature.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

“And because everyone believed you could handle things, nobody noticed when you were being neglected.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

I was the easy child.

The quiet one.

The one who didn't cause problems.

The one who didn't need saving.

Except I did.

I always had.

My mother sat silently.

And for the first time, I saw something worse than guilt.

I saw recognition.

She knew.

She knew exactly what she had done.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

My entire body went cold.

*Connor. We need to talk before you make a mistake.*

I stared.

I knew the number.

Because I had seen it on the restaurant reservation.

Daniel.

Another message appeared.

*Your father is not who you think he is.*

Paige looked at the screen.

“Don't answer.””

But I already had.

*Where are you?*

The reply came immediately.

*At the office. Come alone.*

I stared at the message.

Melissa called.

“Don't go.””

I looked at the phone.

“Why?””

“Because that's what he wants.””

“He wants to talk.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“He wants to control what you know.””

I looked at my mother.

Then at the letter.

Then at the message.

A part of me wanted to go.

Not because I trusted Daniel.

Because I was tired of secrets.

Tired of waiting for someone else to decide what I could handle.

“I need answers.””

Melissa's voice softened.

“Connor.””

“What?””

“Please listen to me.””

I waited.

“Daniel was never afraid of Dad.””

A pause.

“He was afraid of what Dad had saved.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What did he save?””

Melissa whispered:

“Proof.””

The line went quiet.

Then she added:

“Connor, your father didn't disappear because he lost.””

I looked at the message from Daniel.

“He disappeared because he was protecting the last thing that could destroy everyone who hurt him.””

I swallowed.

“What thing?””

Melissa answered:

“The original account records.””

I froze.

The account records.

The ones that could prove everything.

The ones my mother moved.

The ones Daniel tried to hide.

I looked toward the door.

Then my phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn't Daniel.

It was my father.

One message.

Only one sentence.

*Connor, do not meet Daniel alone. He knows where the evidence is.*

I stared at the screen.

Because that meant one thing.

My father wasn't guessing.

He knew.

And before I could respond, another message arrived.

From Daniel.

*Your father already warned you, didn't he?*

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Then the final message appeared.

*Ask him why he never told you what happened the night he left.*
