Chapter 9: The Father Nobody Knew
“Before you trust Sloan, ask her who Lily’s real father is.””
I read the message until my eyes blurred.
Trevor stood beside me.
“Mom?””
I handed him the phone.
He read it once.
Then again.
“No.””
The word came out immediately.
I looked at him.
“No?””
“Sloan told me Lily was mine.””
“I know.””
“She was born after we got married.””
“I know.””
“She has my last name.””
“I know.””
He stared at me.
“Then why would someone send this?””
I looked at the old photograph of Evelyn Price.
“Because someone wants us to believe it.””
Trevor shook his head.
“Or because it’s true.””
He sat down.
For the first time since this nightmare began, he looked genuinely afraid.
I understood.
There were some secrets that could destroy a family even when they turned out to be lies.
“Call Sloan,” I said.
He didn't move.
“Trevor.””
“What if it's true?””
“Then we deal with the truth.””
“And if it isn't?””
“Then we find out who is trying to destroy your marriage.””
He stared at the phone.
Then he called.
Sloan answered immediately.
“What happened?””
Trevor put the call on speaker.
“Who is Lily's biological father?””
Silence.
I heard a shaky breath.
Then Sloan said, “Where did you hear that?””
“That isn't an answer.””
“Trevor, please.””
“Answer me.””
“I need to explain.””
“You've had four years.””
Another silence.
Then Sloan whispered, “It's possible there's something you don't know.””
Trevor closed his eyes.
I felt my heart sink.
“Who?”” he asked.
Sloan began crying.
“I didn't want you to find out like this.””
Trevor stood abruptly.
“Who is her father?””
“He's dead.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“He died before Lily was born.””
Trevor looked at me.
“Who?””
Sloan didn't answer.
“Who?””
Finally, she said a name.
“David Miller.””
My blood turned cold.
Trevor stared at nothing.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“My uncle?””
“Yes.””
“He was supposed to be dead.””
“I know.””
Trevor shook his head.
“This isn't possible.””
Sloan was crying openly now.
“Your mother doesn't know everything.””
I closed my eyes.
I remembered the photograph.
The dock.
David.
My father.
Evelyn.
The date.
The night David disappeared.
Then another memory came back.
A memory I had buried for decades.
I was twenty-four.
My father had called me into his study.
His face was pale.
He had said only one thing.
“Whatever happens, never let David come near this family again.””
I had asked why.
He never told me.
Now I understood why that memory had always felt unfinished.
I spoke into the phone.
“Sloan, tell me the truth.””
“I am.””
“Why did you marry Trevor?””
“I loved him.””
“Did you know Lily was David's daughter before you married him?””
“Yes.””
Trevor turned away.
His shoulders dropped.
“How?””
“Martin found out.””
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He knew David was alive.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“How?””
“He had been tracking him.””
“Why?””
“Because David wanted Lily.””
Trevor spun around.
“Why?””
“Because Lily was the key to the trust.””
I didn't understand.
“What does that mean?””
Sloan took a shaky breath.
“Your father structured the trust so that David couldn't access it directly. But he knew David would try to use Lily because she's his biological child.””
I looked at Trevor.
“So you raised another man's daughter.””
Trevor flinched.
“Don't.””
“I didn't mean—”
“I know what you meant.””
He rubbed his face.
“How could you let me believe she was mine?””
Sloan cried harder.
“Because you became her father.””
“That isn't the question!””
“I was scared.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was protecting you.””
“From what?””
“My father. David. The trust. Everyone.””
Trevor's voice broke.
“You let me love her under a lie.””
Sloan was silent.
Then she said something that changed the room.
“Lily knows you as her father.””
Trevor stopped.
“She doesn't know anything else.””
“Does David?””
“No.””
“Then why is he back?””
“I don't know.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“What happened the night he disappeared?””
Sloan was quiet for so long I thought the call had dropped.
Then she said, “Ask Evelyn.””
I froze.
“Evelyn Price?””
“Yes.””
“How does she know?””
“She was there.””
“Where?””
“The night David disappeared.””
My heart pounded.
“Then why didn't my father tell me?””
“Because your father was protecting you.””
“From David?””
“No.””
“Then from whom?””
Sloan whispered,
“From himself.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Trevor was sitting on the edge of the sofa, staring at his hands.
“I don't know what to do.””
I sat beside him.
“You love Lily.””
“More than anything.””
“That hasn't changed.””
“It feels like everything changed.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“The truth changed,” I said.
“Not the years you gave her.””
Tears rolled down his face.
“She calls me Dad.””
“She always will.””
“What if she finds out?””
“We decide when and how.””
He nodded slowly.
Then there was a knock at the door.
We both froze.
Three knocks.
Slow.
Deliberate.
I stood.
Trevor moved in front of me.
“Stay back.””
Another knock.
I walked toward the door anyway.
“Who is it?””
A woman's voice answered.
“Diane.””
I knew that voice.
I opened the door.
Evelyn Price stood on my porch.
She was older now, but her face was unmistakable.
Silver hair.
Dark coat.
The same eyes from the photograph.
She looked at me for several seconds.
Then she said,
“You finally opened the door.””
I stared at her.
“You knew my father.””
“I worked for him for twenty-nine years.””
“You knew David.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Sloan.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Lily.””
She looked at Trevor.
“Yes.””
He stepped forward.
“Who is my father?””
Evelyn didn't answer.
“Tell me!””
She lifted one hand.
“Your father is the man who raised you.””
Trevor's face tightened.
“You know what I mean.””
She looked at me.
“Biology is not always the whole truth.””
“Then give us the whole truth.””
She stepped inside.
I shut the door.
Evelyn placed a thick envelope on the table.
“This belonged to Richard.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn't he give it to me?””
“He tried.””
“When?””
“The day before he died.””
My throat tightened.
“You're lying.””
“No.””
“He could have told me himself.””
“He intended to.””
“What stopped him?””
Evelyn looked toward Trevor.
“David.””
Trevor's face went white.
“What did he do?””
“David confronted your grandfather.””
“Why?””
“He wanted the trust.””
“And?””
“Richard refused.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside were bank records.
Photographs.
Legal documents.
And one handwritten page.
I knew my father's handwriting immediately.
*Evelyn, if David comes back, give this to Diane only after Trevor knows the truth.*
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“David didn't disappear.””
“Then where did he go?””
“He was arrested.””
Trevor frowned.
“For what?””
“Kidnapping.””
My breath caught.
“Lily?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Trevor stared at her.
“What?””
“David tried to take Richard.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard knew David had been stealing from the family.””
I looked at the documents.
There were bank transfers.
Forgery reports.
Private investigator notes.
My father's signature.
Then I saw something that made my hands shake.
A DNA report.
I stared at the name.
*Trevor Miller.*
The report had been dated four years earlier.
Below it:
*Probability of paternity by David Miller: 0%.*
I looked up.
“What?””
Evelyn nodded.
“David is not Lily's father.””
Trevor stared at the page.
“What?””
“The person who sent you that message wanted you to believe he was.””
My hands trembled.
“Then who is?””
Evelyn looked directly at Trevor.
“You are.””
I felt the room go still.
Trevor's eyes filled with tears.
“But Sloan said—”
“She lied.””
“Why?””
“Because David needed you to believe he was connected to Lily.””
“Why would that matter?””
Evelyn pointed to the trust documents.
“Because the trust releases only when Trevor reaches thirty-five.””
Trevor looked at the papers.
“That's in three weeks.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“The trustee can no longer divert the trust without a court order.””
I frowned.
“Unless someone controls the beneficiary.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Exactly.””
Trevor understood.
“Sloan.””
“Yes.””
“She wanted to become Lily's trustee.””
“Yes.””
“And if Lily were David's child…”
“She could justify keeping the trust under long-term control.””
I sat down.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The secret account.
The false signature.
The Christmas expenses.
The hidden trust.
The lies about David.
The attempted modification.
Sloan hadn't been protecting Lily from David.
She had been using David's name to scare us.
But that still left one question.
“Why did Sloan say Lily was in danger?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“She wasn't.””
Trevor stood.
“What?””
“She was never in danger from David.””
“Then why the hospital?””
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Because Sloan needed medical records.””
“Why?””
“To create a paper trail.””
“For what?””
Evelyn looked at the trust document.
“To prove Lily required lifelong protection.””
Trevor's face hardened.
“She wanted control.””
“Yes.””
“But why spend a hundred thousand dollars?””
“Because she knew that if the trust ever came under scrutiny, every dollar would need an explanation.””
I looked at the Christmas invoices.
“And the party?””
Evelyn nodded.
“The party was part of it.””
“How?””
“Sloan needed your identity attached to as many expenses as possible.””
“To make me look financially responsible?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“To make you look guilty.””
My blood ran cold.
“She wanted the trust to appear mismanaged.””
Trevor whispered, “So she could blame Mom.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the fake contracts.
The forged emails.
The hidden account.
The reimbursement spreadsheet.
The cancellation fee.
All designed to make a pattern.
A pattern pointing to me.
Evelyn reached into her bag.
“I have one more document.””
She placed it on the table.
I unfolded it.
It was a court filing.
At the top:
*Emergency Petition for Removal of Diane Miller as Trustee.*
My name was listed repeatedly.
False allegations.
Financial misconduct.
Unauthorized spending.
Mismanagement.
I looked at the filing date.
December 9.
Tomorrow.
My hands went numb.
“She was going to accuse me.””
Evelyn nodded.
“In court.””
Trevor looked at me.
“So the Christmas party wasn't about Christmas.””
“No,” I said.
“It was a trap.””
Before anyone could speak, my phone rang.
Daniel Reeves.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Diane, don't leave your house.””
“Why?””
“Because Sloan just filed the petition.””
I looked at the document on my table.
“And?””
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“She named Trevor as a witness against you.””
Trevor went pale.
May you like
Then Daniel said the words that made my blood freeze.
“And she filed an emergency request to freeze the trust before Trevor’s birthday.””
