Chapter 5 - MARTHA’S WARNING

I carried Caleb back to the kitchen and set him at the table with paper and crayons. “Draw something for me, okay? Stay right here.”

I returned to the hallway, the second envelope burning in my hand. I broke the seal and unfolded the pages.

What I read turned my blood to ice.

Martha had suspected everything. She had discovered that Vanessa had been tracking her for years. That she had researched the family tree. That she had learned about Caleb’s parentage before Martha even told me.

Vanessa had come here not by chance. She had hunted us down. She had married me to destroy what Martha loved most.

And she had told Martha—days before she died—that she would make sure Caleb never had a happy life. That she would make him pay for being born.

Martha had written every threat down. Every conversation. Every angry word. She had kept receipts. Records. Proof that Vanessa had been harassing her for months.

At the bottom of the stack was a final note, written in a shaky hand, dated three days before Martha’s death:

*“She will try to take him legally. When she learns he is your biological son, she will claim I lied. She will claim he is not legally yours. She will try to invalidate the adoption. She will fight for custody. And she will use every secret, every lie, and every connection she has to win. Protect him, Adrian. Protect him with everything you have. Because she will not stop until she sees him destroyed.”*

I looked up at Eleanor. “She’s going to fight for him.”

Eleanor nodded. “She already has. She called me from the station. She’s hired a lawyer. She’s filing a motion to have the adoption overturned. She claims it was fraudulent. And she’s threatening to tell the world exactly who Caleb is—unless you hand over full custody and a very large settlement.”

“She’s not getting anywhere near him.”

“Adrian, listen to me.” Eleanor stepped closer, voice low. “If this goes to court, everything comes out. The affair. The secrecy. The rushed paperwork. A judge could declare the adoption invalid. And then… then Caleb’s status becomes uncertain. Vanessa could argue that since the legal adoption was flawed—and since no legal father is listed on the birth certificate—she, as the boy’s blood relative and your wife, is better suited to care for him.”

“That’s ridiculous. She’s in jail for abusing him!”

“She’s been charged, not convicted. She can claim the video was edited. She can claim he was misbehaving. She can claim you attacked her and fabricated evidence. And with the adoption in question… she might just get a hearing.”

I stared at the wall, my mind racing. She couldn’t really take him. Could she?

“She wouldn’t dare,” I said. “If she exposes the truth, she exposes herself too. Everyone will know why she married me.”

“Vanessa doesn’t care about shame,” Eleanor said quietly. “She cares about revenge. And if she can’t have your money, she’ll make sure none of us can have peace. She will burn everything down just to watch us burn with her.”

Caleb walked into the hallway then, holding up a drawing. “Daddy! Look!”

It was a picture of three stick figures. One tall one labeled DADDY. One small one labeled ME. And one with a heart around it labeled MOMMY IN HEAVEN.

My throat tightened. I knelt and took it gently. “It’s beautiful, Caleb. Truly beautiful.”

“Can we put it on the fridge?”

“We will put it right there.” I led him back to the kitchen, glancing over my shoulder at Eleanor. “What do I do?”

Eleanor followed, lowering her voice. “First—nothing changes. You are his father. You raised him. You love him. That is what matters. Second—keep him close. Do not let anyone take him anywhere. Not school. Not the park. Not with anyone you do not trust with your life.”

“And my mother?”

Eleanor hesitated. “Evelyn made a terrible mistake. She trusted the wrong person. But she loves Caleb. She would never hurt him. But… keep the secrets locked tight. Only we three know the truth. If it leaks, Vanessa gains leverage.”

“She already knows.”

“But no one else does. Not yet. And until she files those papers, we have time. Time to strengthen the legal standing. Time to gather evidence. Time to make sure Martha’s warnings were not in vain.”

Eleanor turned to leave, pausing at the door. “I’ll handle the legal side. You handle Caleb. And Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“Prepare yourself. When Vanessa strikes… she will strike at the boy. That is how she fights.”

The door clicked shut.

I stood in the quiet hallway, Martha’s letters in one hand, Caleb’s drawing in the other.

Vanessa was in custody. But she was not defeated. She had shown her hand, and it was cruel and calculating. She had married me for revenge. She had chained my son outside to break him. And now she planned to use the truth to tear our lives apart.

Caleb tugged at my sleeve. “Daddy? Why is everyone so serious?”

I looked down at him—bright-eyed, brave, still holding his crayon—and made a silent promise.

She would not take him. She would not hurt him. She would not drag him through the mud of her own bitterness.

I would protect him. Not just as his adopted father. But as his blood.

His real father.

I lifted him up. “Because we have important work to do. We’re going to build the safest place in the whole world.”

Caleb grinned. “With a moat?”

“With a moat. And dragons. And a lock that only we know the key to.”

He laughed, wrapping his arms around my neck. “Can Grandma help too?”

May you like

I glanced toward the east wing, where my mother sat alone with her guilt.

“Yes,” I said. “Grandma can help. But from now on… no more secrets. Not ever.”
