Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

I stood up, holding the page. “Is it true?”
Evelyn walked into the room. She did not look at me. She looked at the floor.
“Is it true?” I repeated, louder this time.
She nodded. A single, sharp movement.
The air left my lungs.
“Why?”
She turned to face me, tears spilling freely now. “Vanessa’s mother was my sister. She was cast out. Disinherited. Because she loved a man our father disapproved of. When she died… she left a daughter. Vanessa. And she left a letter. Saying her child had been robbed of everything. That Martha had stolen her place. That you had stolen her future.”
“So you gave Vanessa permission to destroy us?”
“I gave her permission to have what was hers!” Evelyn’s voice broke. “The family name. The estate. The security. Martha had no right to it. She was born out of wedlock. She should never have inherited. But I loved her. I let her stay. And then she… she did what she did. With you. While my daughter—your wife—was barely cold in the ground.”
“So you punished her. Through Vanessa. Through Caleb.”
“I thought… I thought it would balance the scales. I thought Vanessa would marry you. She would have the life her mother lost. And Martha’s child would be raised… humbled. Corrected.”
“Chained outside in the rain?” I stepped toward her, the paper crumpling in my fist. “Was that part of the balance? Was that correcting him?”
Evelyn flinched. “I did not know she would be cruel. I told her to be firm. To teach him discipline. I never dreamed she would hurt him.”
“You gave her permission to hate him. You told her she was owed what he had. You told her he was a sin to be punished. What did you expect?”
Silence stretched between us. Long, terrible silence.
“I tried to stop her,” Evelyn whispered. “After the night in the rain. I tried to tell her to leave. To go away. But she laughed. She said I had given her the keys. That I could not take them back.”
“And the page?”
“I tore it out. Because I was afraid. Afraid you would hate me. Afraid you would take Caleb and leave. And then… I would lose everything. My son. My grandson. My home.”
“You already lost it,” I said quietly. “The moment you chose revenge over family.”
Evelyn reached for me. “Adrian, please—”
“Stay away from me.” I stepped back. “You stood by while a woman abused my son. You gave her power. You knew who she was and what she wanted. And you said nothing.”
“I was wrong. I see that now. I was blinded by grief and pride.”
“Vanessa didn’t just marry us for revenge,” I said slowly. “She married us because you invited her. Because you handed her the weapons. The secrets. The weaknesses. Everything.”
“I will testify,” Evelyn said desperately. “I will tell the judge everything. I will admit my part. I will ruin her case.”
“And then what? You think I will forgive you? That we will go back to how things were?”
She looked at me, hope dying in her eyes.
“I don’t know,” I said. “Right now… I don’t know if I can ever trust you again. But you will testify. You will tell the judge exactly what you did. And exactly what Vanessa planned.”
“I will. Every word.”
“And until then… you stay away from Caleb. You do not speak to him. You do not come near him. Do you understand?”
Evelyn bowed her head. “I understand.”
I walked past her, out of the study, down the hall. I did not look back.
In my room, I laid the page flat on the desk. Martha had known. She had written it down. She had warned us. And Evelyn had torn it out to protect herself.
Now we had it. Proof. Proof that Vanessa had conspired with Evelyn. Proof that the marriage was part of a plan. Proof that everything that happened was calculated, deliberate, and malicious.
But at what cost?
My own mother had betrayed us. She had handed Caleb to the wolves because she believed he deserved punishment for being born.
I looked across the hall to Caleb’s room. I walked in and stood beside his bed. He turned in his sleep, one hand reaching out.
I took it.
He squeezed my fingers without waking.
May you like
Whatever happened. Whatever anyone said. Whatever secrets came out. He was mine. And I would burn the world down before I let anyone hurt him again.
Even my own mother.
