Chapter 4 - What Margaret HidRichard ran upstairs.

Caleb was safe in his bedroom, but the lights had gone out.
The window was open.
A cold wind lifted the curtains.
On Caleb’s bed was a single message written on a piece of stationery.
Bring the blue box to the greenhouse. Alone.
Richard called the police.
Then he took the box and walked through the dark backyard toward the greenhouse.
Margaret was waiting inside.
Her expensive dress was torn at the sleeve, and her calm mask was gone.
“You brought police into this family?” she asked.
“You locked my son away.”
“I was protecting him.”
“From what?”
Margaret stared at the blue box.
“Elena wanted to tell you Caleb wasn’t only your heir.”
Richard’s breath caught.
“What does that mean?”
Margaret took a step closer.
“Your father left a second trust. Not for Daniel. Not for me. For Caleb.”
Richard understood at once.
That was why Margaret hated the locket.
Why she called Caleb an outsider.
Why she had tried to make him disappear from the party.
She had believed she could control the estate until Caleb became old enough to claim it.
“You stole from my son,” Richard said.
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“I built this family.”
“No,” Richard replied. “You built a prison around it.”
Police lights flashed through the greenhouse glass.
Margaret backed away.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a second key.
“Elena had another secret,” she whispered. “And it will destroy all of us.”
She dropped the key onto the floor.

Before Richard could pick it up, Margaret said the words that made him freeze.
“Caleb’s accident was never an accident either.”
