Thinking

Chapter 3 - THE FIRST CLUE

I sat perfectly still for a long time, staring at the empty space where the video should have been. It felt as though he had reached through the wall and torn the truth right out of my hands.

No proof. Nothing but my word against theirs.

And Ryan knew it. That was why he had left so calmly. That was why he had warned me to think carefully. He had already won—before I even understood the game.

I paced the small room, forcing myself to breathe. He couldn’t have erased every copy instantly, could he? There had to be a way to recover it. Or… maybe I had seen something else. Something I hadn’t realized mattered.

I closed my eyes and replayed the kitchen scene in my mind, frame by frame. The way Ryan had stood. The way Diane had looked. The phone on the counter.

He had pressed record. Adjusted the angle. Spoken clearly. But then—when I grabbed the phone—had he been recording to his own account as well? Or only locally?

And there was something else. When I walked in, Ryan had been standing a certain way. Not watching Noah. Watching the phone. Making sure the lighting was good. Making sure nothing ruined his perfect evidence.

But in doing so… he had given me something else.

I pulled up the gallery. Even if the video file was gone… sometimes thumbnails remained. A tiny, frozen frame. One single image that told the whole story.

I scrolled. Scrolled.

And there it was.

A blurry, low-resolution thumbnail from seconds before I had reached the phone. It did not show the chain clearly. It did not show the bowl. But it showed Noah on the floor. It showed Diane standing over him. And it showed Ryan—standing back, hands clasped calmly in front of him, watching. Not intervening. Not helping.

It was not enough to prove everything. But it was something. A fragment. A clue.

And then I noticed something else. In the background, on the counter behind Ryan… sat a pill bottle. Not ours. I had never seen it before. The label was turned away, but the cap was bright orange. A prescription medication I did not recognize.

Why would there be strange medicine in my kitchen?

I thought back over the last few months. Ryan had been so helpful. So concerned. “Emily, you’ve been working too hard,” he’d say. “Let me make your tea. You need rest.” He had started bringing me drinks every evening—warm, sweet, soothing. “For your nerves,” he’d say.

And I had been tired. So unbelievably tired. I’d thought it was the long shifts. The stress. The bills. But what if…

My blood ran cold.

What if he had been drugging me? Slowly, over time, to make me appear unstable? Exhausted. Irritable. Unfit. And then—when the time was right—he had staged that entire scene, recorded it, and planned to show everyone: See? She cannot handle him. She is falling apart. I am saving the child.

The thumbnail trembled beneath my finger. That was why he had been so calm. That was why he had everything ready. This had been months in the making. Not just a bad day. Not just Diane being cruel. A calculated, cold-blooded plan.

And the orange bottle? That was the missing piece. If I could get that bottle… if I could find out what was inside… I might still be able to prove it.

Noah shifted in his sleep and whimpered. I tucked the blanket tighter around him and kissed his forehead.

“Sleep, baby,” I whispered. “Mommy’s going to fix this. I promise.”

But as I looked out through the thin motel curtains at the dark parking lot, I realized something else. If Ryan had gone to such lengths… he would not stop at deleting a video. He would tell people I had lost my mind. He would file emergency papers. He would claim I was dangerous. And he would use my own exhaustion—his own drug—to prove it.

I needed evidence. And I needed it fast.

I stood up, smoothed my clothes, and tucked the phone securely inside my pocket. I knew what I had to do. I had to go back. Not as a weeping wife. Not as a terrified mother.

May you like

As someone who knew exactly what game she was playing.

I would go back to that house. I would find that orange pill bottle. And I would uncover every lie Ryan had ever told me.
