Chapter 16 - THE ONE THING HE FORGOT

I don’t remember what happened next. I remember running. Screaming. The guards finally waking up. Flashlights cutting through the rain. Voices calling my name. But I barely heard any of it.

I had lost him.

Ryan had Noah. And Ryan knew places no one else did. He knew cabins. He knew hiding spots. He knew how to disappear completely—just like he had learned from his mother.

By dawn, the entire county was searching. Roadblocks. Dogs. Helicopters. Mr. Carter arrived, pale and grim, and told me exactly what I already feared: Ryan had planned this for months. He had prepared safe houses. False identities. Cash stashed away. He could stay hidden for weeks. Months. As long as it took.

And then… I remembered something.

Something small. Something he had forgotten.

Ryan had used Lucas’s birthday for the safe combination. 0714. July 14th.

Everything Ryan did… every code, every habit, every secret… it came from Diane. It came from the past.

If he had a place he went to hide… a place he trusted more than any other… it would be the place where he learned everything he knew. The place where Lucas died.

The old family house.

I told the detective. He hesitated. “It’s been empty for years. No one has seen him there.”

“Because he knows no one will look,” I said. “He learned everything in that house. Every lie. Every trick. Every way to hide. He took Noah there to teach him. To show him where it all began.”

They drove me there. The house stood silent behind its fence, dark windows staring out like eyes. We approached quietly, weapons drawn. No lights. No sound.

But the back door… stood slightly open.
