Chapter 7: The Woman Who Claimed to Be Lily's Mother
The words didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
They floated in the air between us like something from a nightmare.
*The person who claimed to be Lily’s biological mother.*
I stared at Jonathan.
Then at Lily.
Then back at him.
“No.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“That’s impossible.””
Jonathan looked uncomfortable.
“I understand why you would say that.””
“No, you don’t.””
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“I am Lily’s mother.””
Nobody argued.
Not even Evelyn.
Because everyone in that room knew something was wrong.
Something impossible had entered a story that was already full of lies.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Jonathan opened the file again.
“The original report claimed that the child’s current living arrangement was unsafe and that another biological parent should have authority to intervene.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Another biological parent?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“Who?””
Jonathan looked down.
“The report lists the claimant as…”
He stopped.
I hated that pause.
I hated how every truth in this family arrived like a warning.
“Say it.””
Jonathan looked up.
“Claire Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the reaction around me meant everything.
Richard went pale.
Daniel froze.
And Evelyn closed her eyes.
That was when I knew.
This family knew her.
“Who is Claire?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is Claire?””
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
“I…”
My heart sank.
“Daniel.””
He looked ashamed.
“There was someone.””
The words felt like a slap.
Not because I didn’t know he had a past.
Everyone had a past.
But because he looked like a man who had spent years running from something.
“Someone?””
He nodded slowly.
“Before you.””
I stared at him.
“And she has something to do with Lily?””
“No.””
His answer came too quickly.
I noticed.
“Daniel.””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The honesty hurt.
More than a lie would have.
Lily was watching us.
She was too young to understand every word.
But old enough to understand when adults were hiding things.
I immediately moved toward her.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked up.
“Who is Claire?””
I forced a calm smile.
“Someone we need to talk to.””
“Is she mad at me?””
The question broke me.
“No.””
I knelt.
“None of this is because of you.””
Lily looked at the floor.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I touched her hand.
“Because it’s true.””
“But people keep fighting.””
I had no answer.
Because she was right.
The adults in her life had created a storm.
And she was the one standing in the rain.
Jonathan cleared his throat.
“There is another issue.””
I stood.
“What?””
“The court order was requested based on evidence provided by Claire Whitmore.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Evidence?””
“Yes.””
“What evidence?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“Medical records.””
My stomach tightened.
“What medical records?””
“Records suggesting the child’s birth information was altered.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the ground moved beneath me.
“Altered?””
Jonathan nodded.
“The claim states that Lily’s identity was changed after birth.””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s not true.””
But he didn’t sound certain.
And that scared me.
Because there was one question nobody had asked.
The question hiding behind every document.
Every secret.
Every lie.
Who was Lily’s biological mother?
I had always known the answer.
Me.
I carried her.
I gave birth to her.
I held her first.
I knew every detail of the day she came into the world.
But now someone had created paperwork saying otherwise.
And somehow, they had convinced the court enough to issue an order.
Evelyn finally spoke.
“Claire should never have come back.””
Everyone turned.
I looked at her.
“You know where she is?””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“I know what she wants.””
“What does she want?””
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“The same thing everyone wants.””
My voice became colder.
“Money.””
Nobody responded.
Because it sounded true.
But something still bothered me.
If Claire wanted money…
Why wait six years?
Why now?
Why create a legal battle on the exact day Lily was supposed to inherit the Whitmore estate?
I looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Then the documents.
Someone was moving pieces on a board.
And Lily was the prize.
The front doors suddenly opened again.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
She looked around forty.
Elegant.
Confident.
And completely calm.
Like she belonged.
Like she had walked into this mansion many times before.
Her eyes found Daniel first.
Then Evelyn.
Then Lily.
And finally me.
“Emma.””
Hearing my name from her mouth made my skin crawl.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Claire.””
So this was her.
The woman whose name had been buried in Whitmore secrets.
The woman who claimed my daughter.
Claire smiled faintly.
“I see everyone finally found out.””
Nobody spoke.
I moved closer to Lily.
Claire noticed.
And her expression changed.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Something worse.
Possessive.
“Lily.””
My daughter looked at me.
She didn’t answer.
Claire took a step forward.
“I’m your mother.””
Lily immediately moved behind me.
“No.””
The word was small.
But clear.
Claire stopped.
“You don’t remember me.””
Lily held onto my hand.
“Because I don’t know you.””
The room went silent.
Claire’s smile disappeared.
Only for a moment.
Then she looked at me.
“You taught her to say that.””
My anger rose.
“Don’t.””
“You knew this day would come.””
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Claire laughed softly.
“Of course you don’t.””
She looked at Daniel.
“You never told her?””
Daniel looked furious.
“Don’t involve Emma.””
Claire ignored him.
“That’s always been your problem, Daniel.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You hide behind other people when things get difficult.””
I watched Daniel’s face.
Because there was history here.
Pain.
Regret.
Something unfinished.
Claire turned toward Jonathan.
“Do you have the order?””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
My heart tightened.
“You planned this.””
Claire looked at me.
“I planned for the truth to come out.””
“The truth?””
I stepped forward.
“You walked into my daughter’s life with a piece of paper.””
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“Your daughter?””
“Yes.””
“She was never only yours.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Enough.””
Claire looked at him.
“You don’t get to pretend anymore.””
Her words cut through the room.
“Tell her.””
Daniel went still.
“Tell her what?””
Claire smiled.
“The truth about the night Lily was born.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What is she talking about?””
He didn’t answer.
And that silence terrified me.
Because I had spent six years believing I knew the story of my daughter’s birth.
But apparently…
I only knew the version someone allowed me to know.
Claire reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Not old like Michael’s letter.
New.
Fresh.
Prepared.
She handed it to Jonathan.
“This is the proof.””
Jonathan opened it.
His face changed as he read the first page.
“What is it?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Jonathan looked directly at me.
And said the words I never thought I would hear.
“According to these documents…”
He stopped.
May you like
I felt my heart pounding.
“…Emma, you may not be Lily’s biological mother.””
