Chapter 7 - THE ATTIC AND THE WARNING

The stairs creaked beneath our feet as we climbed higher and higher. The house grew quieter, colder. Julian’s flashlight beam cut through the darkness, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air.

At the very top of the house, Julian stopped before a heavy oak door. He turned the handle. It was unlocked.

“Elena kept it open,” he whispered, as if reading my thoughts. “She said no door should ever be locked to those who truly needed to enter.”

He pushed the door open.

The room was exactly as she had left it. A chair sat beneath three tall windows, facing the sunset. Bookshelves lined the walls. A desk stood against the far wall. Dust covered every surface, but nothing was broken. Nothing was missing.

Julian swept the room with his light. “Search carefully. Look for something with a lock. Something small enough to fit in a child’s hands. Something marked with a star… or a lavender flower… or her initials.”

We began searching. I moved toward the desk, running my fingers over the wood. It felt smooth. Worn. As if she had sat here every day. I opened the drawers. Empty. I looked beneath the desk. Nothing.

I walked to the windows. The sun was setting now, casting long golden beams across the floor. Exactly as she had said—where the light falls longest.

I followed the longest beam. It stretched across the floor, across the rug, and fell directly upon the lowest shelf of a bookcase in the corner.

I knelt down. The light touched a small, hand-carved wooden box, sitting pushed far back behind a row of old books. It was inlaid with a single gold star.

My breath caught.

“I found it,” I whispered.

Julian and Marcus rushed over. Julian knelt beside me. He reached out, then hesitated, pulling his hand back. “Go on. She gave the key to you. It is yours to open.”

My hands trembled as I lifted the box from the shelf. It was heavier than it looked. I turned it over. There, on the front, was a small, perfectly shaped keyhole.

I lifted the silver chain from around my neck. I pulled the key free. I hesitated for only a moment. Then I slid it into the lock.

It turned with a soft, satisfying click.

I lifted the lid.

Inside lay three things: a thick, sealed envelope marked FOR MIA — ONLY WHEN I AM GONE, a small, leather-bound journal, and a single, folded piece of paper.

I unfolded the paper first. It was a hand-drawn map. But it wasn’t a map of any place I recognized. There were red X’s marked in three different locations. And written beneath it, in Elena’s beautiful handwriting:

*“Three keys. Three truths. One final secret. Trust no one completely—not even the ones you love. The last truth will break your heart.”*

My hands shook. Julian leaned forward, his voice barely audible. “What does it mean? Three keys? You only have one.”

“Which means there are two more hidden somewhere,” Marcus said quietly. “Each one leading to another piece of the puzzle.”

I reached for the sealed envelope. My name was written across the front in her looping script. I ran my finger along the edge.

“Read it,” Julian said gently. “She wanted you to.”

I broke the seal. I pulled out the letter. It was dated exactly three days before she died.

*“My dearest Mia,*

*If you are reading this, then I am gone. And the people who killed me have already begun their work. They will lie. They will threaten. They will try to turn you against everyone you love. They will try to make you believe terrible things about your father. Do not believe them. Adrian is not perfect. But he is not a murderer. He is a man trapped in a web so dark he cannot see the edges. He has been trying to protect you since the day you were born. Even if he does not know how to save himself.*

*The people I discovered are powerful. They are dangerous. And they have been in our family for generations. I found proof. Names. Dates. Crimes. But I hid it in three separate places. One key would not be enough. If they found it all at once… they would destroy it. And they would destroy you too.*

*So you must find the other two keys. One is hidden where I first learned the truth. The second is hidden where the betrayal began. Only when you hold all three will you know the full terrible truth. And only then will you be able to choose: expose everything and risk your life… or walk away and let them continue.*

*Be brave, my daughter. Be smarter than I was. And remember: the greatest betrayal does not come from an enemy. It comes from the one you trust most of all.*

*I love you more than words can say.*

*— Mother”*

I lowered the letter. Tears blurred my vision.

“She knew,” I whispered. “She knew they would try to frame Daddy. She knew they would send someone after me. She prepared for everything.”

“Which means whoever is behind this… they know about the three keys,” Julian said gravely. “And they will not stop until they have them all.”

Marcus looked at the map in my hands. “The red X’s. The first one… it looks like the old family cemetery. Where Elena’s parents are buried.”

“And the second?” Julian asked.

Marcus traced the second mark. “The construction site. The downtown property Adrian purchased shortly before Elena died. The one Vanessa claimed was hers.”

“And the third?” I asked.

Both men fell silent. They looked at the third mark. At the location written beside it.

Julian’s face went pale.

“The third key…” he whispered. “It is hidden inside the mansion. Inside the room that used to be Elena’s bedroom. The room Adrian still sleeps in.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Inside Daddy’s room?”

Julian nodded slowly. “Which means… whoever is watching us… whoever is working with Vanessa… they are already inside that house. And they are waiting.”

Just then, Marcus’s phone buzzed. He pulled it from his pocket, looked at the screen, and went very still.

“It’s the hospital,” he said, his voice tight. “Adrian’s room alarm was triggered. Ten minutes ago. The guards are gone. The nurses found the door unlocked. His bed is empty.”

The letter slipped from my fingers and fluttered to the floor.

Adrian was gone.

And whoever had taken him… knew exactly where the third key was hidden.
