Chapter 3 - THE NAME ON THE CERTIFICATE

I stared at the photograph on my phone until the letters blurred. The name beneath “Father” was short, simple, and entirely unfamiliar. Julian Carter.
I didn’t know anyone named Julian Carter. I had never heard Elena speak the name. There was no mention of him in any of her letters, her contacts, her family records. It was as if he had appeared out of nowhere to rewrite my entire life.
The elevator dinged. I stepped out into the lobby, my mind still spinning. Vanessa sat on a leather bench near the front doors, guarded by two security officers. She stood when she saw me, her expression shifting instantly from worry to defiance.
“Adrian—”
“Save it.” I held up the phone. “Julian Carter. Who is he?”
Vanessa’s eyes flickered to the screen. For a heartbeat she looked surprised, then she smiled—a cold, triumphant curve of her lips.
“So you found the proof. Elena was clever, wasn’t she? Hiding it all these years.”
“Who is he?” I demanded, stepping closer.
“Just a man she knew. Before you. A lover she couldn’t quite let go of.” Vanessa leaned in, her voice dropping so only I could hear. “Lily isn’t yours, Adrian. She never was. And when the world finds out, everything changes. Your company. Your will. Your home. None of it belongs to you anymore. It belongs to Julian.”
I grabbed her arm. “You’re lying.”
“Am I?” She pulled free smoothly. “Check the records. Ask Marcus. He’ll confirm every word. Elena made sure Lily would be provided for by her real father. She just never told you because she knew you’d throw her out.”
I released her, stepping back as if burned. If this was true… if Lily wasn’t my daughter… then Marcus and Vanessa had all the leverage they needed. They could invalidate my marriage, rewrite my will, seize my assets, and take Lily away from me.
“Why?” I asked quietly. “Why do this? What do you gain?”
Vanessa’s smile widened. “Control. Everything you have, Adrian… I want it. And Marcus gets what he’s always wanted. Elena’s legacy. Your downfall.”
“Elena’s legacy?” I frowned. “What does that mean?”
But Vanessa only shook her head. “It’s too late to ask questions. The documents are filed. The claims are being made. By the end of the week, you’ll have nothing.”
I stared at her, stunned. She hadn’t just planned to hurt me. She had planned to ruin me completely.
“Take her to the guest wing,” I told the guards. “Secure the room. Confiscate her phone. No visitors. No communication. Isolate her completely.”
Vanessa’s composure cracked. “You can’t keep me prisoner!”
“I can and I will. Until I know exactly what you and Marcus have done.”
As the guards led her away, she looked back at me, her eyes blazing. “He’s already filed the paperwork, Adrian! You can’t stop it!”
I walked back to the elevator, my head throbbing. Marcus had filed documents. Claims. Legal actions I knew nothing about. If he had been working against me from the inside, he could have moved assets, altered records, planted evidence—anything.
I needed to see him. Immediately.
I called his office. His assistant answered.
“Adrian. Good morning. To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Is Marcus there?”
There was a pause. “He stepped out early this morning. Said he had urgent business. He didn’t say when he’d return.”
“Where would he go on a weekday?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Thorne. He didn’t leave an itinerary.”
I hung up. Urgent business. On the morning he and Vanessa had scheduled Clara’s downfall. It couldn’t be coincidence.
I went back upstairs. Clara was waiting in the hallway, her face tight with worry.
“Where is he?” she asked before I could speak.
“Gone. His office says he left early.” I showed her the message. “And I got this.”
Clara took the phone. Her face paled as she read the name. “Julian Carter…”
“You know him.”
“I’ve heard the name. Once. From Elena.” Clara handed the phone back slowly. “She said… she said Julian was a doctor. That they’d met when she was studying abroad. That he was the only man she’d ever truly loved. But he left. Without saying goodbye. And then she met you.”
“And she married me anyway.”
“She chose you, Adrian. She told me she loved you. That Julian was part of her past.”
“Then why hide the birth certificate? Why name him as the father?”
Clara looked away. “Because she wasn’t sure. She said she couldn’t be certain. She told me she listed Julian on the original document because she didn’t know how to tell you… and then she couldn’t bring herself to change it. She was terrified you’d leave her.”
“So she let me raise another man’s child.”
“She let you raise Lily because she believed you would be the best father Lily could ever have.” Clara’s voice was firm. “She loved you, Adrian. Don’t let Vanessa and Marcus turn that into something it wasn’t.”
I wanted to believe her. I wanted to hold onto the memory of Elena—gentle, loving, my wife. But the name on the certificate burned in my mind. Julian Carter. The real father. The man who could take everything away.
“Dad?”
I turned. Ethan stood in the doorway, Lily beside him, holding his hand.
“Lily wants to know if you’re okay,” Ethan said.
I knelt down so I was at eye level with my daughter. She looked at me with wide, trusting eyes—eyes that I could now see held hints of Elena, but perhaps also of a stranger.
“I’m fine, sweetheart. Everything is going to be fine.”
Lily hesitated. “Vanessa said… she said I wasn’t your daughter. Is that true?”
The question hit me like a physical blow. I looked at Clara, then back at Lily.
“Vanessa said a lot of things today. Many of them aren’t true. But whatever the papers say… whatever anyone tells you… you are my daughter. In every way that matters. Nothing will ever change that.”
Lily’s lip trembled. “Promise?”
“I promise. With all my heart.”
She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around my neck. I held her tightly, breathing in the scent of her hair, feeling the warmth of her body against mine. She was mine. She had been my daughter since the day she was born. No piece of paper could ever change that.
But as I held her, I knew one thing with absolute certainty: Vanessa and Marcus weren’t just threatening my fortune. They were threatening my family. And they would stop at nothing to tear us apart.
Later that afternoon, once Lily and Ethan had been settled and Clara had agreed to stay the night, I received another message. Same unknown number.
This time, it contained an address.
And a single line:
If you want the truth, come alone. And bring the birth certificate.
I stared at the screen. A trap? Undoubtedly. But it was the only lead I had. Julian Carter. Whoever he was, he was the key to everything.
I looked at the address. A small house on the edge of town. Quiet. Isolated.
May you like
I wrote a note for Clara, telling her where I was going and who to call if I didn’t return. Then I put the phone in my pocket, kissed Lily goodnight, and headed out.
I didn’t know what waited for me. I didn’t know if Julian Carter was an innocent man, a conspirator, or something far worse. But as I drove toward the address, I made myself a promise: I would protect my daughter. No matter what the cost. Even if the truth destroyed everything I believed in.
