Thinking

Chapter 12 - THE DECISION

My father finished the call and turned back to me. “Rescue teams are on their way. They will search the river.”

I looked at him, my heart pounding. “Daddy… how did she know?”

He paused. “Someone must have seen us leave and told her. That is the only explanation.”

“No,” I said slowly. “No one knew. We told no one. We left before sunrise. We took back roads. And Julian’s letter… it was too perfect. As if it had been placed exactly where I would find it. As if it was meant to lead us here.”

My father frowned. “Mia, that is impossible. Julian wrote it years ago. The handwriting matches samples we found elsewhere. We verified it.”

“The handwriting is real,” I agreed. “But what if Vanessa found it years ago? Read it. Learned exactly what Julian had hidden. And then resealed it… and put it back where we would find it? Where she wanted us to find it?”

My father fell silent. He looked at the scattered documents, then down at the rushing water.

“She led us here,” I said quietly. “She knew we would come. She wanted us to come. Why?”

We looked at the empty space where Vanessa had stood only minutes before. At the car she had parked blocking the road. At the man who had run away.

“She didn’t fall,” my father whispered, realization dawning in his eyes. “She wanted us to believe she fell.”

He rushed to the railing and looked down. The water was rough and fast. But there, a short distance downstream, tangled among rocks and half-submerged bushes, lay a dark bundle. Clothing. Vanessa’s coat.

“She faked it,” my father said, his voice shaking with anger. “She made it look like she fell. She left her coat. She wants us to think she is dead. So we will stop looking. So we will feel safe.”

He pulled out his phone again and called the police back. He explained what had really happened. That Vanessa was likely alive. That she had staged everything.

I stood there clutching the box, feeling sick. She had been one step ahead of us the entire time. She had known we were searching for Julian’s evidence. She had known we would eventually find the letter. And she had used it to lure us into a trap. To scare us. To make us think she had died.

But why? What was she hiding so desperately that she would fake her own death just to make us stop?

And then I looked down at the documents in the box. Julian’s letter had mentioned something I had barely noticed. A final, hidden secret. Something even more dangerous than the financial records or the identities.

She is not working alone, Julian had written near the end. There is someone else. Someone she answers to. Someone far more dangerous than she is. And they are watching her just as closely as she watches everyone else.

I froze. Someone else. Vanessa had a partner. A boss. And Julian had been about to expose him too. That was why she had disappeared him. That was why she had gone to such lengths to silence him.

If we kept digging… we weren’t just risking Vanessa returning. We were risking the wrath of someone far more dangerous. Someone who had the power to make people vanish for good.

My father ended his call and looked at me. “The police believe me. They are issuing an alert for Vanessa. But they also agree… if she faked her death… she is likely far away by now.”

He paused, looking at the box in my arms. “We have enough evidence to ensure she can never come back. If she does… she goes straight to prison. We have won. She knows it. That is why she ran.”

But I thought about Julian’s warning. There is someone else.

I stood there on the bridge, rushing water below, scattered papers blowing in the wind. And I faced the hardest decision of my entire life.

I could walk away. We had enough to protect ourselves. We could rebuild. We could bring Claire home. We could be safe.

Or… I could keep digging. I could find out who was really behind everything. Who Vanessa had been working for. Who had helped her disappear. Who might still be watching us.

If I walked away… I might never know. But we would be safe.

If I kept digging… I might find the truth. But I might also bring danger right back to our doorstep.

My father looked at me. “What are you thinking, Mia?”

I looked at the box. At Julian’s letter. At the warning. At the realization that Vanessa was only the face of something much larger.

“Julian didn’t just want to expose Vanessa,” I said quietly. “He wanted to expose the person she worked for. The one who really pulls the strings. And if we stop now… that person is still out there. Still hurting people. Still sending others to do what Vanessa did.”

My father went very still. “Mia… that is dangerous.”

“I know,” I said. “But Julian died trying to expose them. And if we walk away… he died for nothing.”

My father looked at me for a long time. Then he nodded slowly.

“Then we do it properly,” he said. “Carefully. Secretly. And together. We finish what Julian started. But we do not tell a single soul. Not even Claire. Not until we know exactly who we are facing.”

He reached out and took my hand. “Promise me you will be careful. Promise me you will not take unnecessary risks.”

May you like

“I promise,” I said.

And so we made our choice. We gathered the scattered papers. We secured the box. And we drove home in silence, knowing that the true danger was not the woman who had faked her own death… but the shadowy figure she had been working for all along.
