Chapter 18 - TRUTH AND JUSTICE

The days that followed were a blur of activity.

Clara’s web unraveled fast. Once in custody, she told the full truth. Every detail. Every secret. Every lie. She had orchestrated nearly everything: guiding Silas toward me, planting Vanessa, waiting for the right moment to release the letter and destroy anyone who stood in her way. She had even been the one to whisper the idea of locking Noah in the storage room into Vanessa’s ear—knowing it would trigger everything to unfold exactly as she needed.

Arthur had been her safety net. Someone to blame. Someone to take the fall. And when he realized the truth… she had tried to have him silenced.

But Arthur had survived. And Vanessa—risking everything—had convinced Silas’s loyal men that Clara was the true enemy. That continuing to follow her orders would only bring them all down. They had handed Arthur over to Vanessa. And together… they had set the trap.

Now Clara sat in a cell of her own. Facing charges as serious as Silas’s. The war between the families had not been fought with guns. It had been fought with secrets. And in the end… every secret had been laid bare.

I visited Silas one last time before his trial.

I laid out the full truth. Clara’s role. Her revenge. How both sides had been manipulated. How his entire life had been shaped by two people—one hiding the truth, one using his rage.

Silas listened in silence. When I finished, he bowed his head.

“She used me,” he said hollowly. “My own aunt used my hatred to do her own work. I was never her partner. I was only her weapon.”

“We were all weapons,” I said quietly. “Until we chose to stop.”

Silas looked up. His eyes were red rimmed.

“I will testify against her. Everything. Every detail. I will tell the court how she guided me. How she lied. How she used Noah as leverage. It will not undo what I have done. But it will end this war forever.”

“Thank you,” I said.

“Thank you,” Silas answered. “For showing me the truth. Even when it hurt.”

He reached through the glass—chains rattling—and pressed his hand against it. I placed mine over it. For a moment… enemies were only two men broken by the same past.

“Take care of the boy,” Silas said quietly. “And tell him… that hatred destroys everyone it touches. Even those who believe they fight for justice.”

“I will,” I promised.

I walked away from that meeting feeling sad… but finally free. The curse was breaking. The lies were falling away. And for the first time in thirty years… there were no more secrets left to keep.
