Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING AND THE STORM

Voss stood perfectly still. For a long, terrible moment, I thought he would lunge at her. That he would tear the device from her hand and silence her forever.

But Vanessa did not flinch. She held the camera steady, aimed directly at him.

“Step away from them,” she said. “Unlock their bonds. Take your men and leave.”

Voss’s chest heaved. His face darkened with rage. But he did not move.

“You think you’ve won,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “You think a recording and a threat will stop me.”

“It stops you today,” Vanessa said. “Because you know I mean it. Because you know I have nothing left to lose.”

Voss stared at her. Then slowly—so slowly I barely saw it—his hand moved away from the weapon beneath his coat. He let out a long breath, straightened, and smoothed his jacket.

“Very well,” he said, too calmly. “You win this round, Vanessa. But understand this—you have made an enemy of me. And I do not forgive. I do not forget.”

“Unlock them,” Vanessa repeated.

Voss walked to Mommy and Daddy. He cut their ropes with a sharp knife from his pocket. He ripped the gags away.

Daddy gasped, pulling air into his lungs, rubbing circulation back into his wrists. He stood unsteadily, stepping between Voss and the rest of us.

“Get out,” Daddy said. “Leave this place. And never come near my family again.”

Voss smiled—a cold, cruel curve of the mouth. “This isn’t over, David. The trust is active. Mia is the legal owner. And I will not rest until what is rightfully Elias’s… is mine.”

“Elias is dead,” Daddy said. “And you are nothing.”

Voss did not reply. He walked to the door, signaled to his men outside, and vanished into the gray morning. The door slammed shut behind him.

Silence fell.

Mommy rushed to Vanessa, catching her arm. “Why? Why did you do this?”

Vanessa lowered the camera. Her hand shook. She looked at Mommy, then at Daddy, and finally at me standing in the doorway.

“Because I was wrong,” she said quietly. “I thought Elias had wronged me. I thought I deserved what he had. But I forgot… Elias was a good man. And his family does not deserve to suffer because of my mistakes.” She looked at Daddy. “I’m sorry. For everything.”

Daddy studied her. Then he stepped forward and embraced her—briefly, awkwardly, but sincerely.

“Thank you,” he said. “You saved our lives.”

Vanessa pulled away, wiping her eyes. “The recording… it’s set to upload. It will take time. And even with it… Voss has resources. Influence. He will try to disappear. Or destroy the evidence. Or claim the recording was altered.”

“Then we keep it safe,” Daddy said. “And we protect Mia. That is what matters.”

Vanessa nodded. She walked to the window, peering out at the driveway. “He’s gone. But he’ll be watching. Be careful. Everywhere. Always.” She turned back. “I need to go too. If Voss thinks I’ve truly betrayed him… he’ll hunt me. I need to disappear before he realizes I’m not bluffing.”

“Come with us,” Mommy said. “We can protect you.”

Vanessa shook her head. “No. I have a different role to play. I know things about Voss—his habits, his contacts, his safe houses. I’ll feed information to Nolan. But I have to stay free. Otherwise… nothing works.” She paused. “Tell Mia… I’m sorry I hurt her. Tell her I was confused and afraid.”

“I will,” Daddy said.

Vanessa looked at me one last time. Her expression was soft, sad, and full of regret. Then she walked out the door and was gone.

Mommy locked it behind her, sliding the heavy bolt home. She turned and sank onto the bench, burying her face in her hands. Daddy sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

I ran to them. Mommy pulled me onto her lap, holding me tight, rocking me. Daddy rested his head against mine, breathing in short, ragged breaths.

“We need to leave,” Daddy said after a moment. “Now. Before Voss changes his mind.”

Mommy stood, helping me down. “Where can we go? He knows our home. He knows our friends. He knows everything.”

Daddy looked at the fire crackling in the hearth. “There is a safe house. Elias told me about it years ago. Deep in the mountains. No address. No records. Voss won’t know it exists.”
