Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I looked at my mother.

She looked as though someone had struck her.

“No,” she whispered.

“That's impossible.””

I turned toward the phone.

“Mr. Reeves, are you certain?””

“Yes, sir. The notary section carries your mother's name and commission details.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Let me see that document.””

Rochelle held up one hand.

“Please don't touch anything until we receive the original records. We need to establish exactly what was submitted.””

Vanessa suddenly started speaking.

“See? That's what I've been trying to explain. There must be some mistake.””

I turned toward her.

“What mistake?””

“I don't know! Maybe someone mixed up the paperwork.””

“You told me you didn't know anything about transfer papers.””

“I didn't!””

“Then why did Darius submit them?””

She looked away.

I took a step toward her.

“Vanessa, look at me.””

She slowly raised her eyes.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

“Did you give him my signature?””

“No!””

“Did you ask my mother to notarize anything?””

Her lips parted.

For a moment, I thought she would deny it.

Then she whispered, “I asked her to sign something.””

My mother made a small sound.

“What did you ask me to sign?””

Vanessa looked down.

“It was just an authorization.””

“What authorization?””

“I told you. It was for the new house.””

My mother shook her head.

“You told me it was a form confirming that Ethan had permission to discuss the household insurance with me.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“That's basically what it was.””

“No,” Rochelle interrupted.

“Those are completely different legal matters.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Can you stop talking like I'm on trial?””

Rochelle didn't react.

“I'm explaining why we need the actual documents.””

I looked at my mother.

“Mom, did you notarize anything for Vanessa?””

She shook her head firmly.

“No. I refused.””

“Are you sure?””

“Absolutely.””

She reached into her handbag again and pulled out a small notebook.

“I wrote down what happened that evening because I thought something was wrong.””

I stared at her.

“You wrote it down?””

She nodded.

“I didn't want you thinking I was making accusations without evidence.””

She opened the notebook.

Inside were several handwritten lines.

*October 17. Vanessa brought two documents to the house. Said they were related to Ethan's new property purchase.

I asked to read them. She became upset and said I was making things difficult. I refused to sign.*

My mother looked at me.

“Ethan, I never notarized anything.””

I felt a wave of relief.

Then another thought struck me.

“If she didn't notarize it, who did?””

Rochelle looked at the phone.

“Mr. Reeves, can you tell us whether the notary commission number is visible?””

“Yes. I can email a copy immediately.””

“Please do.””

Vanessa moved toward the ballroom.

“I'm done with this.””

I caught her attention.

“Where are you going?””

“To get ready. We're getting married.””

I stared at her.

“Are you serious?””

She lifted her chin.

“Ethan, we have guests downstairs. Your parents are here. My family is here. Everyone has spent months preparing for this day.””

“You're still thinking about the wedding?””

“Of course I am!””

“Someone is trying to transfer my entire property portfolio.””

“And you think I planned that?””

“I think you know more than you're telling me.””

Her eyes filled again.

“You're supposed to trust me.””

I almost laughed.

“Trust is not something you can demand after betraying someone.””

She stepped closer.

“Three years, Ethan. Three years together. Are you really going to throw that away because of a few messages?””

“A few messages?””

“Yes!””

“Messages from another man asking whether I signed papers to transfer millions of dollars?””

She lowered her voice.

“Not here.””

“Where, Vanessa? Where would you prefer to discuss it?””

She glanced toward the ballroom.

I followed her gaze.

Through the open doors, I could see guests taking photographs.

A little girl in a white dress was holding flower petals.

My father was speaking with Vanessa's uncle.

The musicians were adjusting their instruments.

Everyone was waiting for a wedding that would never happen.

I looked at Rochelle.

“Can we stop the transaction immediately?””

“We can notify the relevant institutions and request an urgent hold while the documents are investigated. I'll also contact the company's banking and title representatives.””

“Do it.””

Rochelle stepped away to make a call.

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from Michael Reeves.

I opened the attachment.

The first page contained a list of properties.

My downtown commercial development.

Two apartment complexes.

A warehouse facility.

Three undeveloped parcels of land.

I recognized every address.

Then I saw the amount.

The proposed transaction valued the portfolio at $8.6 million.

My hands went cold.

I scrolled down.

The document claimed that I had authorized the transfer of ownership to a newly established company called DC Holdings LLC.

I read the initials again.

DC.

Darius Cole.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What's DC Holdings?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes moved toward the document.

Then she swallowed.

“I don't know.””

“Darius's initials are on the company.””

“Lots of people have those initials.””

I showed her the page.

“Do you expect me to believe that?””

She began crying again.

“Ethan, I didn't know he was going to do something like this.””

I looked at her carefully.

“Then tell me what you did know.””

She covered her face.

“I just wanted us to have financial security.””

“By transferring my properties to his company?””

“No!””

“Then explain.””

She looked toward my mother.

“Can we please speak privately?””

My mother shook her head.

“You've had plenty of private conversations. Perhaps it's time you started telling the truth in front of everyone.””

Vanessa glared at her.

“You have always wanted me out of this family.””

My mother looked exhausted.

“I wanted my son to be happy. I didn't care whether he married a wealthy woman or a woman with nothing. I cared whether she loved him.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“Easy for you to say.””

My mother stepped closer.

“I worked double shifts cleaning hotel rooms so Ethan could afford his first college semester. His father sold his favorite truck to help him buy his first work vehicle. We never asked him to repay us. We only wanted him to build a good life.””

Her voice cracked.

“And when he brought you home, I welcomed you. I cooked for you. I bought you birthday presents. I treated you like my daughter.””

Vanessa looked away.

My mother continued.

“You sat at my table and called me Mom. And now my son is standing here on his wedding day, wondering whether the woman he loves has been planning to rob him.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered, “I never wanted to hurt him.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you do it?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of never having enough.””

“You were about to marry someone who would have shared his life with you.””

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at the floor.

“Darius told me you would never make me an equal partner in anything. He said you'd always control the money. He said I'd spend my whole life asking you for permission.””

I shook my head.

“Did I ever refuse to pay for anything you needed?””

“No.””

“Did I ever tell you that you couldn't work, travel, or have your own accounts?””

“No.””

“Then what are you talking about?””

She didn't answer.

I remembered something.

Three months earlier, Vanessa had asked me whether I would put her name on the ownership documents for the company.

I had told her we could discuss it after the wedding.

She had become upset.

At the time, I thought she wanted reassurance.

Now I wondered whether that conversation had been the beginning of the plan.

My phone rang again.

This time it was our company's chief financial officer, Daniel Brooks.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

“Ethan, where are you?””

“I'm at the hotel. What's wrong?””

“Rochelle just called me. There's a problem with the property transfer.””

“I know. What have you found?””

“Someone submitted an authorization package to the title company. We also received a request yesterday to change the authorized contacts on two of the company's accounts.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did you approve it?””

“Absolutely not. I flagged it.””

“Who submitted the request?””

“An external representative.””

“Name?””

“Darius Cole.””

I closed my eyes.

Daniel continued.

“Ethan, there's something else. The request included a copy of your driver's license, your company identification, and a scanned signature.””

I looked at Rochelle.

She had returned and was listening.

“Did the signature match mine?””

“Almost perfectly.””

“Almost?””

“There's a difference in the final stroke. I noticed it because I process your approvals every week.””

Rochelle took the phone.

“Daniel, preserve every version of the submitted documents. Don't communicate with the representative. Send all records directly to our legal team.””

“Understood.””

She ended the call.

Then she looked at me.

“This is no longer just a personal dispute. We need to treat it as a suspected attempted fraud and identity misuse. We'll notify the appropriate institutions and authorities.””

Vanessa suddenly raised her voice.

“Stop making everything sound criminal!””

Rochelle turned toward her.

“Then perhaps you should explain why your associate is attempting to transfer assets using a questionable authorization.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He isn't my associate!””

I stared at her.

“Then who is he?””

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then finally said, “He's someone I used to date.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

“You used to date him?””

She nodded slowly.

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

“Then why is he calling you his future wife?””

“I don't know.””

“Why are you meeting him?””

She wiped her face.

“He contacted me a few months ago. He said he had a business opportunity.””

“What opportunity?””

“He told me he could help us become financially independent.””

I stared at her.

“By stealing my company?””

“He said it wasn't stealing!””

“What did he call it?””

She hesitated.

“An investment arrangement.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“An investment arrangement where my signature is forged and my properties are transferred to a company I don't own?””

Vanessa started crying again.

“He said the documents were temporary.””

I felt something inside me break.

“How long have you known about this?””

She whispered, “Four months.””

Four months.

Four months of wedding planning.

Four months of tasting cakes, choosing flowers, selecting music, and discussing our future home.

Four months of her kissing me goodbye while apparently planning to take everything I owned.

I stepped away from her.

“Did you sleep with him?””

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

My mother turned her face away.

I looked at the diamond bracelet still sitting inside my pocket.

Then I slowly removed the velvet box.

Vanessa's eyes followed it.

“What is that?””

“A wedding gift.””

Her expression softened.

For a brief second, I saw the woman I thought I was marrying.

She reached for it.

I closed my hand.

“I bought this because I thought you loved me.””

“Ethan—”

“But you were planning your life with someone else.””

She started sobbing.

“Please. I can fix this.””

I shook my head.

“No. You can explain what happened to the people investigating it.””

I placed the box inside my jacket.

Then I turned toward the ballroom.

The orchestra had stopped playing.

A wedding coordinator stood near the entrance, waiting for instructions.

I walked toward her.

“Please announce that the ceremony has been postponed indefinitely.””

Her eyes widened.

“Mr. Carter?””

“I'm sorry. There won't be a wedding today.””

Behind me, Vanessa screamed.

“ETHAN!””

I stopped.

She came running, struggling to lift the front of her gown.

“You cannot do this to me!””

I turned around.

“Watch me.””

She grabbed my arm.

“Do you understand what this will do to me? My family is here. My friends are here. Everyone knows we're getting married!””

I gently removed her hand.

“Then you should have thought about that before planning to take everything I own.””

She stared at me.

Then her face hardened.

“You think you're so smart, don't you?””

I said nothing.

She leaned closer.

“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””

I looked at her.

“Then tell me.””

Her lips trembled.

For a moment, she seemed ready to reveal everything.

But before she could speak, her phone rang.

DARIUS.

She answered without thinking.

“Darius, I told you not to call me!””

The hallway went silent.

A man's voice came through loudly enough for all of us to hear.

“Did he sign it or not?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at Rochelle.

Then at my mother.

She whispered, “No.””

The man's voice became furious.

“Then get him to sign! You promised me this would be finished today!””

I took one step forward.

“Darius Cole?””

Silence.

Then the man laughed.

“Ah. Ethan Carter.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Who are you?””

He answered with a confidence that made my blood run cold.

“I'm the man your bride was supposed to marry after she took your money.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Darius continued.

“But since you want to play detective, there's something you should know.””

He paused.

“Your bride isn't the only person who signed those documents.””

Then he named someone.

May you like

Someone I never expected.

*“Your father, Robert Carter.””*
