Chapter 8: The Father I Never Knew

I had imagined meeting my father a thousand different ways.

As a child, I imagined him knocking on our door.

As a teenager, I imagined him apologizing.

As an adult, I imagined asking him why he left.

But I never imagined this.

A mansion filled with secrets.

A family built on lies.

A husband who knew more about my past than I did.

And a father standing in front of me after twenty-eight years, telling me we had to run.

I stared at William Ashford.

The man from the photograph.

The man whose existence had been a mystery my entire life.

He looked older than the picture, of course.

Time had changed him.

Silver hair.

Lines around his eyes.

A face that carried regret.

But there was something else.

Something I noticed immediately.

He looked at me the way I looked at Grant and Theo.

Like he was memorizing every detail.

Like he was afraid he would lose me again.

"Evelyn.""

My name sounded strange coming from him.

Too familiar.

Too painful.

I stepped back.

"You don't get to say my name like you know me.""

The words came out before I could stop them.

His expression broke.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

Like he expected it.

"You are right.""

Charles watched from across the room.

For once, he wasn't in control.

The men who entered behind William spread throughout the room, but they weren't threatening anyone.

They were protecting.

Marcus looked between them.

Then at his father.

"What is happening?""

William looked at him.

A long silence passed.

Then William said:

"You married my daughter.""

Marcus went still.

Not because he didn't know.

Because he had heard it from someone else.

Someone he never expected.

His own father.

Charles's face darkened.

"Don't do this.""

William turned toward him.

"No, Charles.""

His voice was calm.

"This ends tonight.""

I looked at Marcus.

"You knew.""

He didn't answer.

My heart sank.

Again.

Even after everything.

Another secret.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Evelyn, I was going to tell you.""

"When?""

The question stopped him.

"When exactly?""

He looked away.

That was enough.

I nodded slowly.

"Right.""

William looked at Marcus.

"You should have told her.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"I know.""

"No.""

William's voice hardened.

"You don't know.""

The room became quiet.

"You know what it feels like to live with guilt. You don't know what it feels like to live your entire life without the truth.""

Marcus looked down.

Because he knew he deserved that.

I turned to William.

"My mother knew you were alive.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Pain crossed his face.

"Because she believed keeping you away from me was the only way to keep you alive.""

The words should have made me angry.

Instead, they hurt.

Because suddenly I understood my mother's silence.

She wasn't hiding a father from me.

She was hiding me from something.

"From Charles?""

William looked at him.

"Yes.""

Charles laughed quietly.

A cold, humorless sound.

"You make me sound like a monster.""

Nobody answered.

Because nobody needed to.

William walked closer to the table.

"The truth is simple, Evelyn.""

He looked at the file.

"Your mother and I discovered Charles was stealing from Ashford Global.""

"I know.""

He nodded.

"But you don't know the worst part.""

I waited.

"He wasn't just stealing money.""

William looked at Charles.

"He was creating a system.""

My eyebrows tightened.

"What system?""

"One designed to make people disappear.""

The room became colder.

William continued.

"Anyone who discovered the truth lost everything.""

Employees.

Partners.

Witnesses.

"And your mother was next.""

I looked at Marcus's mother.

She lowered her eyes.

"She helped me escape.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Her face broke.

"Because Charles threatened you.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

"He told me if I contacted you, he would destroy you.""

A bitter smile appeared on her face.

"He kept his promise.""

Marcus looked at his father.

Charles didn't deny it.

That was the worst part.

He didn't even try.

I looked at Charles.

"How many people did you hurt?""

He stared at me.

"More than you will ever know.""

The answer shocked me.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he sounded proud.

"I built something powerful.""

William stepped forward.

"You built something stolen.""

Charles smiled.

"And yet everyone respected me.""

His eyes moved to Marcus.

"Even my own son.""

Marcus flinched.

Because that was the weapon Charles always used.

Not anger.

Shame.

"You wanted me to marry her because of the inheritance.""

Charles looked at his son.

"Yes.""

The honesty was brutal.

Marcus's face changed.

"You admit it?""

"Of course.""

Charles walked closer.

"You think love matters in families like ours?""

Nobody spoke.

"Power matters.""

He pointed toward me.

"Evelyn Ashford was the key.""

I looked at him.

"The key to what?""

"The Ashford trust.""

William answered.

"The trust contains the evidence.""

I understood.

The documents.

The proof.

The reason everyone wanted control over me.

Charles had spent years searching for something that belonged to my father.

Something only I could access.

"Why me?""

William looked at me.

"Because your father made it that way.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

He opened the file.

Inside was another document.

"Your father created the trust under one condition.""

He handed it to me.

I read the first line.

*The beneficiary must be a direct descendant who chooses truth over inheritance.*

I looked up.

"What?""

William nodded.

"The trust was never about giving you money.""

He glanced at Charles.

"It was about finding someone who would expose what happened.""

Charles's expression changed.

A rare moment of anger.

"You think she will destroy me?""

I looked at him.

The man who had tried to take my children.

The man who had controlled my husband.

The man who had stolen my family's truth.

"No.""

My voice was calm.

"I think you destroyed yourself.""

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Charles smiled.

"You sound like your mother.""

I froze.

"What did you say?""

His expression became unreadable.

"Your mother said the same thing.""

A chill went through me.

"You knew my mother well.""

Charles looked away.

"Better than anyone.""

William's face changed.

"Don't.""

But Charles continued.

"Did she tell you that?""

I looked between them.

"What?""

Charles smiled.

"Your mother didn't just hide William's location from you.""

William stepped forward.

"Charles.""

"She hid something else.""

My heart started pounding.

"What?""

Charles looked directly at me.

"She knew the truth about why William disappeared.""

Silence.

I looked at William.

He didn't move.

But his eyes gave him away.

He was afraid.

Not of Charles.

Of me knowing.

"What truth?""

William whispered:

"Evelyn...""

But I stepped toward him.

"No.""

My voice shook.

"No more secrets.""

The room went silent.

"Not from my husband.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Not from this family.""

I looked at Charles.

"And not from my father.""

William closed his eyes.

Then slowly nodded.

"You deserve to know.""

He took a breath.

"Your father didn't disappear because Charles tried to destroy him.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then why?""

William looked at me.

"Because I disappeared to protect your mother.""

I waited.

"And because someone inside my own family betrayed me.""

A terrible thought entered my mind.

Someone inside.

Someone close.

Someone who knew everything.

William looked at Marcus.

Then at his mother.

Then finally at me.

"The person who gave Charles the information that exposed us...""

He paused.

And the entire room held its breath.

"...was your mother.""

I felt the world stop.

"No.""

William looked devastated.

"I know what it sounds like.""

"No.""

My voice became louder.

"My mother would never.""

"She didn't betray us willingly.""

I stared at him.

"Then explain.""

Before he could answer, the mansion shook with a loud crash.

The lights flickered.

The men near the entrance moved immediately.

Someone shouted from outside.

Then a gunshot echoed through the house.

Grant and Theo started crying.

I grabbed them instantly.

Marcus moved toward us.

"Get them upstairs.""

William's expression changed.

"They found us.""

Charles looked toward the windows.

And for the first time...

He looked afraid.

William turned to me.

"There isn't enough time to explain everything.""

Another sound.

Closer.

"You need to leave.""

I held my sons tighter.

"Who found us?""

William looked toward the front door.

Then whispered:

"The person your mother was protecting you from.""

The door downstairs exploded open.

And a voice called through the mansion.

A voice I had never heard.

But one that made Charles Whitfield step backward.

Because even he was afraid of it.

"Charles.""

A pause.

May you like

Then:

"Where is Evelyn Ashford?""
