Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew My Father's Secret

The old Sterling design studio had been closed for nearly a year.
It stood behind the company's main research building, separated from the newer offices by a narrow service road and a row of overgrown trees.
The building had once been where Sterling's first automotive concepts were developed.
My father had worked there during the early years of his career.
I remembered visiting as a child.
He used to lift me onto his desk and show me sketches of cars that existed only in his imagination.
I arrived at 8:15 p.m.
Daniel had insisted on driving me.
“I don't like this,” he said as we parked.
“Neither do I.””
“You shouldn't go inside alone.””
“The email specifically said to come alone.””
“That's exactly why I don't like it.””
I looked at the dark building.
“One person knows where the original agreement is. We need him.””
Daniel reached into the back seat and handed me a small recorder.
“Keep this on.””
I slipped it into my jacket pocket.
“Are you staying here?””
“I'm staying close enough to hear you scream.””
I gave him a weak smile.
“Comforting.””
He didn't smile back.
“Ten minutes. If you don't come out, I'm going in.””
I nodded.
Then I walked toward the entrance.
The side door was unlocked.
Inside, the building smelled of dust, old paper, and machine oil.
A few emergency lights still worked.
The reception desk was covered in dust.
I walked down the corridor.
At the end, a figure stood beside a large drafting table.
He turned when he heard me.
He was in his early thirties, with dark hair, a short beard, and a tired expression.
“Maya Harris?””
“Yes.””
“I'm Ethan Bell.””
I looked at him carefully.
“You worked here?””
“Three years ago.””
“Daniel told me about you.””
Ethan gave a humorless laugh.
“Then he probably told you I left under suspicious circumstances.””
“He said you were accused of leaking confidential files.””
“I was.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
He walked toward a metal cabinet.
“Your father helped me understand what was happening. By the time he realized how much Richard had been manipulating the ownership records, it was already too late for me.””
I followed him.
“What happened?””
Ethan opened the cabinet.
“My father, Thomas Bell, was Sterling's outside attorney for nearly twenty years. He handled contracts, intellectual property assignments, and private investment arrangements.””
He removed a cardboard archive box.
“Richard wanted him to approve a transfer of several design patents into a private holding company. My father refused because the original creators hadn't consented.””
“Was Gloria involved?””
Ethan nodded.
“She handled some of the financial paperwork. Vanessa was being prepared to take over the creative division.””
He placed the box on the table.
“My father discovered that the company had been using old employee signatures to support new ownership claims.””
My stomach tightened.
“Like mine?””
“Exactly.””
He opened the box.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Some were marked with employee names.
Others contained project numbers.
Ethan pulled out a folder.
*PROJECT AURORA.*
My heart began pounding.
“You have it?””
“I have part of it.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was the original project authorization, a copy of the trust agreement, and several handwritten notes.
I recognized my father's handwriting immediately.
I touched the page.
“He wrote this.””
Ethan nodded.
“My father kept the original documents after your father asked him to preserve them.””
“Why didn't he give them to me?””
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of Richard?””
“Of everyone.””
Ethan pulled out another document.
It was an email from Thomas Bell to my father.
The subject line read:
*URGENT — UNAUTHORIZED TRUST AMENDMENT.*
I read the message.
Thomas had discovered that a power of attorney had been used to change the beneficiary of the trust.
But the document granting that power had been signed under suspicious circumstances.
My father's signature appeared on it.
However, the witness section contained a name I didn't recognize.
*Vanessa Harris.*
I stared at it.
“Vanessa witnessed the power of attorney?””
Ethan nodded.
“And she was only twenty-three at the time.””
I looked at the date.
It was two years earlier.
My father had been healthy then.
But the document had been created using a template registered to Northbridge Strategic Consulting.
The same company Gloria controlled.
“Did Thomas investigate it?””
“He did.””
Ethan removed another folder.
“He found that the power of attorney had been revoked before the trust amendment was filed.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“Then Gloria had no authority.””
“Correct.””
“Why wasn't the amendment reversed?””
“Because Richard had already transferred the trust assets into another investment structure.””
I stared at him.
“Where?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then he placed a document on the table.
At the top was the name of a bank.
*FIRST NATIONAL BANK — TRUST ACCOUNT 8472.*
Below it was a list of beneficiaries.
My name appeared first.
Then a second name.
*MAYA HARRIS — PRIMARY BENEFICIARY.*
And beneath it:
*STERLING AUTOMOTIVE EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION — SECONDARY BENEFICIARY.*
I read the percentages.
Eighty percent to me.
Twenty percent to the foundation.
The trust had never named Richard.
It had never named Vanessa.
“Then how did Richard get listed as the beneficiary?””
Ethan opened another folder.
“That's the part your father wanted me to show you.””
Inside was a second trust document.
It contained the same reference number.
But the beneficiary section had been changed.
My name was removed.
Richard's name had been inserted.
At the bottom was a signature.
It was supposedly Thomas Bell's.
I looked at Ethan.
“Did your father sign this?””
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he was already dead when this version was filed.””
I stared at the date.
Thomas Bell had died six months ago.
The amended document was filed two months after his death.
I felt cold.
“Who submitted it?””
Ethan pointed to the filing record.
The name was:
*VANESSA HARRIS.*
I closed my eyes.
She had submitted a document using the signature of a dead attorney.
This wasn't a family argument anymore.
It was a pattern.
A deliberate system of forged signatures, altered ownership records, and financial transfers.
“Why did you wait until now to contact me?”” I asked.
Ethan leaned against the table.
“Because your father made me promise not to release the archive unless someone challenged the original ownership.””
“And someone did.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“But there's another reason.””
“What?””
“Your father told my father that if the project ever reached the final development stage, the real ownership documents would become extremely valuable.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Ethan pulled out a financial agreement.
“Because Project Aurora isn't worth eighteen and a half million.””
I looked at the document.
“What do you mean?””
He pointed to a confidential investment valuation.
The projected value was considerably higher.
*$126,000,000.*
I stared at the figure.
“That's impossible.””
“Not if you include the patents, manufacturing rights, and the international licensing agreements.””
I sat down.
My design wasn't simply a car.
It was the foundation of a much larger technology package.
The battery architecture could be adapted for commercial vehicles.
The cooling system could be licensed separately.
The chassis design contained several innovations that Sterling had been planning to patent.
And someone had been trying to claim ownership of all of it.
“Why didn't the company tell me?””
Ethan gave a bitter smile.
“Because the company didn't want you to know how much you had created.””
I looked down at my father's notes.
One sentence had been underlined.
*Never allow the original engineering files to be separated from the trust.*
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan opened another box.
Inside was a small external hard drive.
“This contains the original engineering archive.””
I stared at it.
“My files?””
“Your father's copy of them.””
“How did he get them?””
“He asked Daniel to preserve the original versions before the project entered the final development phase.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel never told me.””
“Your father asked him not to. He wanted a backup outside the company's systems.””
I picked up the drive.
Then I noticed a small envelope taped to its underside.
My name was written on it.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
*Maya,*
*If you're reading this, the people I feared have probably taken control of the company records. I need you to remember one thing: the person who owns a document is not always the person who owns the truth.*
I stopped.
My eyes filled.
*You designed Aurora because you loved creating something that could move people forward. Don't let anyone turn that gift into a weapon against you.*
The final paragraph was shorter.
*There is one person who knows exactly why Gloria needed Vanessa to become project director. Find the original finance director. His name is Robert Hayes. He left Sterling after my death.*
I looked up.
“Do you know him?””
Ethan nodded.
“He's in Chicago.””
“Can we contact him?””
“I can try.””
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
I answered.
“I'm inside the old studio.””
“Are you okay?””
“Yes. I found the original trust agreement.””
“Good. Come out.””
His voice sounded strange.
“What happened?””
“There's a security team outside the building.””
I froze.
“What?””
“They're asking for you.””
I looked toward the entrance.
Through the glass, I could see two men standing beside a black SUV.
One held a phone.
The other was speaking into a radio.
Ethan closed the archive box.
“Richard found out.””
I swallowed.
“How?””
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
Then he pointed to a small security camera.
The red indicator light was on.
Someone had been watching us.
Daniel's voice came through the phone.
“Maya, listen to me. Don't go out the front entrance.””
Ethan grabbed the archive box.
“There is a service exit.””
He led me down a narrow corridor.
We reached a metal door.
Before he opened it, he stopped.
“One more thing.””
“What?””
He looked directly at me.
“Your father didn't just leave you the trust.””
I waited.
“He also left you voting control of a company.””
I stared at him.
“What company?””
Ethan opened the door.
“Sterling's original intellectual property holding company.””
My mouth fell open.
“That company was dissolved.””
“No. Its public registration was changed. The shares were transferred into a private trust.””
He handed me a document.
At the top was the company name.
*STERLING ADVANCED MOBILITY GROUP.*
Below it was my father's signature.
And beneath that, the controlling shareholder.
*MAYA HARRIS — 51%.*
I looked at Ethan.
“You're telling me I own a controlling share of Sterling's intellectual property company?””
“Yes.””
“Then why does Richard run Sterling?””
“Because he thought your father had transferred control to him.””
I stared at the document.
Ethan's expression became serious.
“There's just one problem.””
“What?””
“The shares cannot be activated without the original beneficiary appearing before the bank's trustee.””
“And where is the trustee?””
Ethan looked toward the dark corridor.
“Richard knows.””
A loud bang came from the front of the building.
Someone had forced the entrance.
Ethan grabbed my arm.
“We need to move.””
We ran through the service exit into the rain.
Daniel was waiting behind the building.
He opened the car door.
“Get in!””
Ethan climbed into the back seat.
I followed.
As Daniel pulled away, I looked through the rear window.
One of the security men had reached the service door.
He was holding a phone.
Then my own phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
Vanessa.
“You found the archive, didn't you?””
I didn't respond.
She laughed softly.
“That's unfortunate.””
“What do you want?””
“I want you to understand something, Maya. You may have documents, recordings, and your father's little handwritten letters.””
She paused.
“But you don't have the one thing that matters.””
“What?””
“The original bank trustee has already been paid.””
The call ended.
I looked at Ethan.
His face had gone pale.
“Who is the trustee?”” I asked.
He didn't answer.
Daniel glanced at us through the rearview mirror.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Robert Hayes.””
My father's former finance director.
The man we had been preparing to find.
May you like
The man who could prove everything.
And apparently, the man Vanessa had already bought.
