Chapter 4: The Enemy Inside the Walls

Margaret stared at the name glowing on his phone screen.

For a moment, he didn't answer.

The years disappeared.

He wasn't standing inside a luxury restaurant anymore.

He was back in a small kitchen with cracked tiles and a broken window, listening to the sound of rain while planning a dream nobody else believed in.

The person calling him had been there from the beginning.

Before the empire.

Before the millions.

Before anyone knew the name Hale Collection.

Thomas noticed his hesitation.

"Mr. Hale?""

Margaret slowly pressed the answer button.

"Hello.""

A familiar voice came through.

"Margaret.""

The voice was older now.

But he would have recognized it anywhere.

Margaret closed his eyes briefly.

"Samuel.""

Daniel looked up.

He knew that name.

Everyone connected to Hale Collection knew that name.

Samuel Whitmore was not just an old friend.

He was the only person who had stood beside Margaret when the company had nothing.

The first investor.

The first partner.

The first person who believed a struggling young man could build something extraordinary.

But Samuel had disappeared from the business world years ago.

Nobody knew why.

"Where are you?"" Margaret asked.

A pause.

Then Samuel answered quietly.

"Somewhere I should have never been.""

Margaret's expression changed.

"What does that mean?""

"It means I made a mistake.""

The restaurant remained silent around him.

Everyone watched.

Especially Daniel.

Because he had never heard his father speak like this.

Not as a businessman.

Not as a founder.

But as someone who had just heard bad news from someone he cared about.

Samuel continued.

"Margaret, you need to listen carefully.""

"I'm listening.""

"Adrian Cole didn't come after your company because he saw an opportunity.""

Margaret looked toward the folder on the table.

"Then why?""

"Because he knows something.""

"What?""

Samuel took a breath.

"He knows you stepped away from the company.""

Margaret frowned.

"I never hid that.""

"No. But you hid something else.""

The words made Margaret's hand tighten around his cane.

"What?""

Another pause.

Then Samuel said:

"He knows about your health.""

The restaurant became completely still.

Daniel looked confused.

Victoria glanced at him.

Emily looked at her grandfather.

Margaret's face remained calm.

But his eyes changed.

"Who told him?""

"I don't know.""

"You do know.""

Samuel was silent.

Margaret lowered his voice.

"Samuel.""

The old friend sighed.

"I found documents.""

"What documents?""

"Medical reports.""

Daniel immediately looked toward his father.

Margaret noticed.

"Continue.""

Samuel's voice became quieter.

"Someone accessed your private records and used them to convince the board that you were no longer capable of leading.""

Margaret looked down.

The accusation wasn't new.

Age had always been something people used against him.

But this was different.

This was planned.

Someone had taken a personal weakness and turned it into a weapon.

"Who has access to my records?"" Margaret asked.

Samuel didn't answer.

And Margaret already knew.

"Daniel.""

The name came out softly.

Everyone looked at his son.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No.""

Margaret watched him.

"You had access.""

Daniel stood.

"Father, I never gave anyone your medical information.""

Margaret said nothing.

The silence made Daniel more nervous.

"I didn't.""

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

"Mr. Hale, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

But Margaret didn't move.

Because this was no longer only business.

It was family.

"Daniel.""

His son looked at him.

"Did Adrian Cole know about my condition before tonight?""

Daniel's face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Margaret saw it.

"You knew.""

Daniel looked away.

"I heard rumors.""

"Rumors?""

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

"People were concerned.""

"People?""

"Board members.""

Margaret nodded slowly.

"So you discussed my personal life with the board.""

"I was trying to protect the company.""

Margaret looked at him.

"Again with that.""

Daniel's frustration grew.

"You don't understand what was happening.""

"Then explain.""

Daniel looked around.

The executives.

The employees.

The guests watching.

For once, he didn't have the confidence he usually carried.

"After you stepped away, things changed.""

Margaret listened.

"The company needed someone making decisions. Someone present every day.""

"And that someone was Adrian?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Margaret continued.

"You trusted him.""

"I thought I could.""

"And now?""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"I don't know.""

The honesty surprised Margaret.

For the first time that night, he saw something other than arrogance.

He saw fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of realizing he had made a terrible mistake.

Margaret sat back down.

"Tell me everything.""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he began.

"Six months ago, Adrian approached me.""

"Why?""

"He said the company was changing. He said investors wanted younger leadership.""

Margaret remained quiet.

"He told me that you were tired. That you didn't want the responsibility anymore.""

Margaret looked at him.

"Did you believe him?""

Daniel swallowed.

"At first.""

The answer hurt.

"But then?""

Daniel looked toward the restaurant window.

"Then I started noticing things.""

"What things?""

"Reports didn't match. Some accounts looked strange. Money was moving between divisions.""

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

"What?""

Daniel looked at him.

"I didn't know how serious it was.""

Thomas's expression hardened.

"How long have you known?""

Daniel hesitated.

"A few weeks.""

The disappointment in Thomas's face was obvious.

Margaret noticed.

"So you knew there was a problem.""

Daniel nodded.

"And you still helped him?""

"I thought I could control it.""

Margaret gave a sad smile.

"That was your mistake.""

Daniel looked angry.

"Because I'm not you?""

Margaret looked surprised.

"What?""

"That's what everyone thinks, isn't it?""

Daniel's voice rose.

"They think I'm just your son. The man who inherited everything.""

Nobody spoke.

Because there was truth hidden inside his anger.

Daniel had spent his entire life standing behind a legend.

And instead of becoming his own person, he had spent years trying to prove he wasn't just Margaret Hale's son.

Margaret softened slightly.

"Daniel.""

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You don't understand.""

"Then help me understand.""

Daniel looked at him.

"I wanted one thing that was mine.""

The words were quiet.

"I wanted people to respect me without saying your name first.""

Margaret stared at him.

For a moment, he saw the little boy who used to follow him around the first restaurant.

The boy who wanted to impress his father.

The boy who wanted approval.

But somewhere along the way, that desire became resentment.

Margaret spoke softly.

"You should have told me.""

Daniel's eyes became wet.

"You were always so proud.""

"Proud?""

"Yes.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You built an empire. Everyone worshiped you. How was I supposed to tell you I felt like I could never become enough?""

Margaret looked down.

Because that was the one thing he had never considered.

He had spent his life building a legacy.

But he never asked whether his son felt trapped beneath it.

The silence between them lasted several seconds.

Then Samuel's voice came from the phone.

"Margaret?""

He had forgotten the call was still connected.

"I'm here.""

"There's something else.""

Margaret picked up the phone again.

"What?""

Samuel lowered his voice.

"Adrian isn't just trying to take control.""

Margaret waited.

"He already has someone inside your family.""

Daniel looked confused.

"What does that mean?""

Samuel continued.

"It means the person who gave Adrian access to confidential information...""

A pause.

Margaret felt the room shift.

"...was not Daniel.""

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked shocked.

"Then who?""

Samuel didn't answer immediately.

The hesitation was terrifying.

Margaret stood.

"Samuel.""

Finally, the old man spoke.

"Margaret, you need to leave that restaurant.""

"Why?""

"Because the person helping Adrian is there with you.""

Every face around the table changed.

Thomas looked toward the entrance.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Victoria looked confused.

Emily looked frightened.

Margaret slowly turned his head.

His eyes moved across the people sitting closest to him.

His family.

His employees.

The people he trusted.

Then his gaze stopped.

Because one person suddenly looked away.

One person who had been silent all night.

One person who had never once defended him.

Margaret's voice was barely above a whisper.

"Victoria.""

She looked up.

"What?""

Margaret stared at her.

May you like

And for the first time...

She looked afraid.
