Chapter 10: The Truth That Set Us Free
Emma stared at the photograph.
Her mother stood outside their apartment building, wearing the gray coat she had owned for almost fifteen years.
Beside her was Richard Blackwood.
The man Adrian had buried.
The man everyone believed had died.
And the man whose name appeared on the documents that had destroyed Daniel Carter's life.
Emma's fingers tightened around the phone.
"Adrian.""
He looked at the screen.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he turned toward Marcus.
"Where is my mother?""
Marcus frowned.
"Your mother?""
"Richard Blackwood. Where is he?""
"Sir, your father was cremated. I personally attended the funeral.""
"Then explain the photograph.""
Marcus examined it.
His face changed.
"That isn't possible.""
Emma was already reaching for her handbag.
"Call the police. I'm going home.""
Adrian caught her wrist.
"You're not going alone.""
"My mother is out there.""
"And whoever sent that photograph knows exactly where she is.""
"Then we need to move!""
Adrian nodded toward Marcus.
"Get two vehicles. One team goes to Emma's apartment. Another goes to the hospital. Nobody approaches Margaret until we confirm the situation.""
Marcus immediately left.
Adrian turned back to Emma.
"There's something we need to establish.""
"What?""
"That photograph could be old.""
Emma shook her head.
"Look at the pavement. It's wet. It rained tonight.""
Adrian enlarged the image.
A streetlight reflected in a puddle.
Then he noticed something else.
The clock above the apartment entrance displayed 8:17.
It was the exact time the photograph had been sent.
"This is live," he whispered.
Emma was already moving toward the door.
The apartment building was surrounded by police vehicles when they arrived.
Emma jumped out before the car had completely stopped.
"Mom!""
A uniformed officer approached.
"Miss Carter?""
"Where is my mother?""
"We haven't located her inside the building.""
"What?""
"Her apartment is empty.""
Emma ran upstairs.
The front door stood open.
The kitchen light was on.
A cup of tea sat on the table.
Her mother's handbag was missing.
Emma searched the bedroom, the bathroom, and the small balcony.
Nothing.
Then she noticed a piece of paper on the kitchen counter.
It was an old photograph of Daniel.
On the back, Margaret had written:
I am sorry I couldn't tell you the truth.
Emma sank into a chair.
Adrian entered moments later.
"Emma?""
She handed him the photograph.
He read the message.
Then he noticed a small envelope beneath it.
Inside was a brass key.
Emma recognized it immediately.
It was identical to the key that had opened her father's storage locker.
Except this one had a different number.
*307.*
"Another storage locker," Adrian said.
Emma shook her head.
"No. Dad only had one.""
Adrian examined the key.
"Then perhaps this one belonged to your mother.""
A police officer entered.
"Sir, we found something outside.""
He handed Adrian a small device.
It was a broken tracking unit.
Emma stared at it.
"What's that?""
Adrian turned it over.
"An old vehicle tracker.""
The officer explained that it had been attached beneath a car parked near the building.
Emma looked at Adrian.
"Someone followed her.""
He nodded.
"And they wanted us to know.""
The key opened a storage unit at a private facility less than three miles away.
Inside, they found a wooden cabinet, several boxes of old documents, and a small television covered with a sheet.
Emma approached the cabinet.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
There were dozens of letters.
All addressed to her.
None had been mailed.
She picked up the first one.
Emma,
Today I saw you walking home from school. You were wearing the blue jacket your father bought you. You looked so much like him that I almost called your name.
I wanted to run to you.
But I couldn't.
Emma pressed the letter against her chest.
Her mother had written it eleven years earlier.
She opened another.
I saw you graduate today. I watched from the back of the hall. You looked beautiful. I wanted to tell you how proud I was.
Another letter.
You have started working for the Blackwood family. I know you don't understand why I am frightened. Please forgive me for keeping you away from the truth.
Emma's tears fell onto the paper.
Adrian stood quietly beside her.
He didn't interrupt.
Then she found a folder marked:
*THE NIGHT OF THE ACCIDENT.*
Inside were photographs, medical records, and an old police statement.
The first photograph showed Daniel standing beside a car.
The second showed Margaret in the driver's seat.
The third showed Victor Hale standing beside the passenger door.
Emma looked at the date.
November 14.
The night Daniel disappeared.
She opened the statement.
It was written in her mother's handwriting.
I, Margaret Carter, confirm that I knowingly provided Victor Hale with access to my husband's vehicle. I believed the vehicle would be used to transport Daniel to a safe location. I was told that the arrangement had been approved by Richard Blackwood.
Emma felt her stomach turn.
She continued reading.
I was unaware that the brakes had been tampered with. I was not informed that Adrian Blackwood would be inside the vehicle.
The statement ended abruptly.
A second page contained another signature.
Richard Blackwood.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
Margaret Carter will receive financial compensation and protection for her daughter in exchange for her silence.
Emma lowered the paper.
"My mother helped them.""
Adrian shook his head.
"She may have been manipulated.""
"She gave them the keys.""
"She believed your father was being moved somewhere safe.""
"And then she accepted money.""
He didn't answer.
Emma turned another page.
There was a photograph of a hospital corridor.
Margaret stood beside Richard Blackwood.
A young Adrian was visible in the background.
On the back, someone had written:
The original witness agreement.
Emma looked at Adrian.
"Why were you there?""
He studied the photograph.
"I remember this day.""
"What happened?""
"My father told me he had arranged a private settlement with Daniel's family. He said Margaret had agreed to keep quiet.""
"And you believed him?""
"I was there because he wanted me to sign the final paperwork.""
Emma stared at him.
"Did you?""
Adrian's face went pale.
"I don't remember.""
"How can you not remember?""
"I had been given medication after the accident. My father told me I was signing a medical authorization.""
Emma looked down.
The signature on the final document was unmistakably Adrian's.
But the handwriting beside it belonged to someone else.
Victor Hale.
Adrian took a photograph of the page.
"Marcus needs to see this.""
A sound came from the television.
The screen flickered.
A recording began playing automatically.
Margaret appeared.
She was sitting in the same kitchen where Emma had grown up.
Her face looked older, tired, and frightened.
"Emma," she said.
Emma stopped breathing.
"If you're watching this, I probably didn't have the courage to tell you everything myself.""
Margaret looked down at her hands.
"I need you to understand something. I did give Victor the keys. But I did not know what he intended to do.""
She paused.
"Your father discovered that Richard Blackwood was planning to transfer the company to Edward. He wanted to stop them. He believed Adrian was the only person who could help.""
Her voice broke.
"I thought if I helped move Daniel to a safe location, the threats would stop. I thought we could all go home.""
She wiped her eyes.
"But Victor betrayed us.""
The recording continued.
"After the accident, Richard came to me. He told me Daniel was alive. He offered me money to sign a statement saying Daniel had disappeared voluntarily.""
Emma covered her mouth.
"I refused at first. But then he showed me photographs of you. He told me that if I didn't cooperate, you would suffer the same fate as your father.""
Margaret leaned closer to the camera.
"I was wrong to accept the money. I was wrong to keep quiet. I was wrong to let you grow up believing your father was dead.""
She began crying.
"But I never stopped loving you.""
The recording ended.
Emma stood motionless.
Adrian placed a hand on her shoulder.
She didn't pull away.
Then another sound came from the television.
A second video file opened.
This one showed Richard Blackwood.
He was sitting in a dark office, wearing a white shirt and holding a glass of water.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If this recording is being watched, Edward has returned.""
Adrian stepped closer.
His father's voice filled the storage room.
"Adrian, I owe you an apology.""
He paused.
"I allowed my brother to control the company. I allowed him to destroy Daniel Carter's family. And when I discovered what he had done, I was too weak to stop him.""
Adrian's eyes filled.
"Your accident was not intended to kill you. Edward wanted you removed from the company. Victor was supposed to make it look like a mechanical failure.""
Richard looked down.
"But the person who changed the plan was Vanessa.""
Emma stared at the screen.
Richard continued.
"She discovered that you had been investigating the accounts. She feared you would expose her. She ordered Victor to make sure you never recovered.""
Adrian clenched his jaw.
"Your father was there that night. He was not the driver. He was the person who tried to stop Victor after the car went over the barrier.""
The recording paused.
Then Richard added one final sentence.
"And if you want to know who killed me, look at the person who signed my death certificate.""
The screen went black.
Emma slowly turned toward Adrian.
"Your father was murdered.""
Adrian nodded.
"And the killer is still free.""
Three hours later, Marcus returned with an update.
"Sir, we've identified the person in the photograph.""
Adrian stood.
"Who?""
"Richard Blackwood.""
"That's impossible.""
"Not the real Richard. A former security contractor named James Mercer. He underwent facial reconstruction surgery years ago.""
Emma looked up.
"Why would someone do that?""
Marcus opened a folder.
"Because Edward needed someone to impersonate Richard after his death. The company continued receiving payments authorized under your father's identity.""
Adrian studied the photograph.
"And where is Mercer now?""
"Under police surveillance. He was spotted near the northern railway station.""
"Take us there.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Sir, there's something else. We received a call from the hospital.""
Emma immediately stood.
"My father?""
"He's safe. But someone attempted to access his medical records.""
"Who?""
Marcus looked at Adrian.
"Vanessa.""
Vanessa was arrested at a private railway terminal just before dawn.
She was carrying two passports, a suitcase filled with cash, and a laptop containing encrypted financial records.
When Adrian arrived at the police station, she was sitting in an interrogation room.
Her hair was tied back.
Her makeup was gone.
But her expression remained defiant.
"Adrian.""
He sat opposite her.
"Where is Edward?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Still asking the wrong questions.""
"Did you order my accident?""
She looked down.
Then she smiled.
"Yes.""
Emma, standing behind the observation window with Marcus, closed her eyes.
Adrian didn't move.
"Why?""
"Because you were investigating the accounts. You were going to expose everything.""
"You could have left.""
"And lost millions?""
"You tried to kill me.""
"I tried to protect myself.""
Adrian leaned forward.
"Did you know Emma's father was alive?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Of course.""
"Did you arrange the attempt on Daniel's life?""
She looked away.
"Edward did.""
"But you knew.""
Vanessa said nothing.
Adrian placed the photograph from the gala on the table.
"The wheelchair.""
She stared at it.
"You were supposed to remain dependent on everyone," she said finally.
"I didn't expect you to stand up.""
"Why?""
"Because I had already arranged for the company to be transferred. I needed you to remain incapable of managing your affairs.""
Adrian stood.
"You're finished.""
Vanessa looked up.
"You think Emma will stay with you after all this?""
He stopped.
She smiled cruelly.
"She knows what you did. You signed the transfer order. You left her father behind. You lied to her for months.""
Adrian looked at her.
"Perhaps she won't forgive me.""
"Then what do you have left?""
He glanced toward the observation window.
"Something you never understood.""
He opened the door.
"People aren't possessions.""
Then he walked away.
The investigation took another six weeks.
Edward was arrested after police recovered the original financial records from an offshore storage account.
James Mercer confessed to impersonating Richard Blackwood.
Vanessa's encrypted files connected her directly to the vehicle sabotage, the wheelchair incident, and the attempted attack on Daniel.
Clara cooperated with investigators after learning that Edward intended to blame her for the entire operation.
Thomas Reed testified about the hospital transfers.
And Margaret gave a full statement.
For the first time in eleven years, Daniel Carter's death certificate was officially withdrawn.
His identity was restored.
His family name was cleared.
But for Emma, the most important moment came on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
She was sitting beside her father in the hospital garden.
Daniel held a cup of tea in both hands.
"You've been very quiet today," he said.
Emma smiled.
"I'm thinking.""
"About what?""
"About how much time we lost.""
Daniel looked toward the trees.
"We can't get it back.""
"I know.""
He reached for her hand.
"But we have today.""
Emma leaned her head against his shoulder.
For the first time in eleven years, she could hear her father's heartbeat without wondering whether she was dreaming.
Adrian arrived an hour later.
He carried a small cardboard box.
Emma looked at him.
"What's that?""
"Something I found in my father's office.""
He placed it on the table.
Inside was an old photograph of Daniel, Margaret, Richard, and Adrian.
They were standing outside a garage.
Daniel was holding a wrench.
Richard was laughing.
And Adrian, much younger, was sitting on the hood of a car.
Emma picked up the photograph.
"Where was this taken?""
"At your father's workshop. The day he taught me how to change a tire.""
Daniel smiled faintly.
"You kept stripping the bolts.""
Adrian laughed.
"I was terrible.""
"You were impatient.""
Emma looked at the photograph again.
On the back was a handwritten message.
To the people who believed family was more important than money.
Daniel touched the writing.
"Richard wrote that.""
Adrian nodded.
"He wanted me to have it.""
Emma looked at him.
"Do you think your father would have been proud of what you did?""
Adrian was quiet.
"I don't know.""
Daniel reached across the table.
"He would have been proud that you finally stopped hiding.""
Adrian's eyes filled.
He looked at Emma.
"I know I can't undo what happened.""
"No," she replied.
"I know you may never forgive me.""
She studied him.
"I don't know what the future looks like.""
He nodded.
"But I want to spend the rest of my life being someone you don't have to question.""
Emma looked down at their hands.
For months, she had believed she was protecting a helpless man.
In reality, she had been protecting someone who had spent years hiding behind other people's decisions.
But she had also discovered something about herself.
She could love someone without excusing their mistakes.
She could forgive without forgetting.
And she could walk away if the truth demanded it.
"I don't need you to promise me forever, Adrian.""
"What do you need?""
"Honesty. Even when it hurts.""
He nodded.
"You have it.""
She reached for his hand.
This time, he didn't hide anything.
Six months later, Blackwood Holdings announced a complete restructuring.
Adrian stepped down as chairman and established an independent foundation to compensate families affected by the company's illegal operations.
Daniel became one of the foundation's advisers.
Margaret moved into a smaller house near the coast.
She and Daniel began rebuilding their relationship slowly, without pretending the lost years could simply disappear.
Emma left her position as Adrian's personal assistant.
She started her own business, helping families locate missing relatives and navigate complicated legal cases.
On the day her office opened, Adrian arrived with flowers.
"Congratulations.""
Emma laughed.
"You didn't have to come.""
"I know.""
He handed her a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed the two of them standing in the ballroom where everything had begun.
The staircase was visible behind them.
Adrian was standing.
Emma was smiling.
On the back, he had written:
You saved me twice. Once from falling down the stairs, and once from becoming the man my family expected me to be.
Emma looked up.
"That's very dramatic.""
"I've been practicing.""
She laughed.
Then she noticed a second photograph inside the envelope.
It showed her father standing beside a younger Adrian, holding a wrench.
The same workshop.
The same day.
The same promise that had survived eleven years of lies.
Emma's eyes filled.
Adrian reached for her hand.
"Ready?""
"Where are we going?""
"Your father is waiting for us.""
She smiled.
Outside, the afternoon sun warmed the pavement.
For the first time, Emma wasn't walking toward another secret.
She was walking toward a future she had chosen herself.
And when Adrian offered her his hand, she took it—not because she felt sorry for him, not because he needed saving, and certainly not because she owed him anything.
She took it because he had finally learned that love was not about keeping someone beside you through deception.
It was about giving them the truth and allowing them to choose.
Behind them, the old Blackwood mansion stood silent.
May you like
Its secrets had finally been exposed.
And the woman who had refused to apologize for saving a man everyone thought was broken had become the one person who taught him what strength really meant.
