Chapter 5: The Father Who Knew The Truth
Robert Hayes stood in the doorway.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The room that had already felt heavy became almost impossible to breathe in.
Rachel stared at her father.
The man she had spent her entire life trying to impress.
The man whose approval had always mattered more than she admitted.
The man who was now standing on the wrong side of the door.
“Dad…”
Her voice was smaller than she wanted.
Robert didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at Margaret.
Then at Daniel.
Then at the tablet showing the paused image of Rachel’s secret meeting.
Finally, his eyes returned to his daughter.
“I hoped I was wrong.””
Those five words hurt more than anger would have.
Rachel shook her head.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
Robert walked into the room.
“No, Rachel.””
His voice was quiet.
“I’m finally understanding.””
She stepped toward him.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I know enough.””
“You heard one conversation.””
“I heard months of conversations.””
The room went silent.
Rachel looked at him.
“What?””
Robert sighed.
He looked older than he had an hour ago.
“I knew you were planning something.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Robert looked away.
“That was my mistake.””
Rachel felt a strange mix of anger and fear.
“You let all of this happen?””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I let you make your own choices.””
The sentence cut deeper than she expected.
Because Rachel had always believed her father would defend her.
No matter what.
He had always been the person who told her she deserved more.
Who encouraged her ambition.
Who told her she was destined for something bigger.
Now he was telling her that ambition had crossed a line.
“You were supposed to support me,” Rachel whispered.
Robert’s expression softened.
“I supported you when you worked hard.””
He paused.
“I supported you when you earned things.””
Another pause.
“But I cannot support you when you try to take something that isn’t yours.””
Rachel looked around the room.
Everyone was watching.
Everyone was judging.
She felt trapped.
“So that’s it?””
She laughed quietly.
“You all decided I’m the villain.””
Margaret looked at her.
“No one said that.””
Rachel looked at her.
“Really?””
Margaret nodded.
“We said you made choices.””
“That’s the same thing.””
“No,” Margaret replied.
“It isn’t.””
Rachel looked at the tablet.
“The meeting.””
Daniel tapped the screen.
The video started again.
The room watched as Rachel sat across from a man in a private restaurant.
The man leaned forward.
His voice filled the room.
“Once Margaret signs the transfer, control changes immediately.””
Rachel’s own voice followed.
“I know.””
The younger version of herself sounded confident.
Certain.
Like nothing could go wrong.
The man asked:
“And if she refuses?””
Rachel remembered that moment.
She remembered exactly what she had said.
But hearing it now felt different.
Because she wasn’t hearing a plan.
She was hearing evidence.
“She won’t have a choice.””
The video paused.
Nobody spoke.
Rachel felt every eye on her.
“That’s not what I meant.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What did you mean?””
“I meant she would understand eventually.””
Margaret leaned back.
“Understand what?””
Rachel looked at her.
“That the company needed a younger leader.””
The words came out weaker than before.
Margaret nodded slowly.
“So you decided for me.””
Rachel looked away.
The silence became unbearable.
Robert moved closer.
“Rachel, who was that man?””
She didn’t answer.
Her father’s face changed.
“You need to tell them.””
Rachel swallowed.
“No.””
Robert looked disappointed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“This isn’t about protecting yourself anymore.””
Rachel looked at him.
“It’s about what?””
“The damage.””
The word stayed in the air.
Damage.
Rachel hated it.
Because she didn’t think of herself as someone who caused damage.
She thought of herself as someone who fixed things.
Someone who stepped in.
Someone who took control when others couldn’t.
But now she was beginning to see the difference.
Margaret noticed the change in her expression.
But she didn’t interrupt.
She let Rachel sit with it.
Then Rachel looked at Robert.
“You knew about the meeting.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t stop me.””
Robert shook his head.
“I wanted to believe you would stop yourself.””
That answer broke something inside her.
Because deep down, she had wanted someone to stop her.
She just didn’t want to admit it.
The door opened again.
This time, a police officer entered.
Behind him was another officer carrying a folder.
Rachel immediately stiffened.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
Margaret nodded.
The officer stepped forward.
“Rachel Hayes?””
She didn’t answer.
“Ms. Hayes?””
“Yes.””
The officer held up a document.
“We need to ask you some questions regarding unauthorized access to company records and attempted fraudulent transfer of company ownership.””
Rachel’s face went pale.
“No.””
The officer remained calm.
“You are not under arrest at this moment. We are requesting your cooperation while we review the evidence.””
Rachel looked around desperately.
“Margaret.””
For the first time, she looked at the woman differently.
Not as an enemy.
Not as an obstacle.
As someone who had the power to end this.
“You’re doing this?””
Margaret’s expression was unreadable.
“I am allowing the truth to speak.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You could have stopped this.””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised her.
Margaret continued.
“I could have.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Margaret looked at the documents.
“Because if I protected you from the consequences of your choices, you would never understand the choices you made.””
Rachel stared.
The words were painful because they were not cruel.
They were honest.
The officer turned slightly.
“We will need your cooperation.””
Rachel picked up her phone.
Her hands were shaking.
She looked at the screen.
One missed call.
One message.
From the same person who had warned her earlier.
She opened it.
Her heart stopped.
The message said:
*You need to know the truth before they show the final recording. I never betrayed you. I was trying to protect you.*
Rachel looked up.
Confusion replaced fear.
Final recording?
She looked at Margaret.
“What final recording?””
Nobody answered.
Not Daniel.
Not Robert.
Not Emily.
Not even Margaret.
That silence terrified her.
Because Rachel suddenly realized something.
Everyone in the room knew there was one more piece of evidence.
One more secret.
One more truth waiting to come out.
And somehow…
It was connected to her.
But not in the way she expected.
The officer stepped forward again.
“Ms. Hayes, we need to leave.””
Rachel didn’t move.
Her eyes stayed on Margaret.
“What is the final recording?””
Margaret looked at her for a long moment.
Then she said quietly:
“The recording that explains why I never removed you from my life.””
Rachel froze.
Because that was the one question she had never asked.
Why?
Why had Margaret trusted her?
Why had Margaret allowed her close?
Why had the woman who built an empire welcomed someone who wanted to replace her?
May you like
And now Rachel realized the answer might destroy the one thing she still had left.
The truth about why Margaret had chosen her in the first place.
