Chapter 9: Daniel’s Final Move
The name on the screen stopped everyone.
*DANIEL WHITMORE.*
For a moment, Margaret forgot how to breathe.
Her son.
The man everyone believed was gone.
The man whose death started this entire nightmare.
His name was now appearing as the person taking control of the company.
Rachel stared at the screen.
“No.””
The word was barely a whisper.
Ethan looked at Attorney Ellison.
“That’s impossible.””
Ellison didn’t answer.
He was already typing.
Trying to understand.
Trying to find an explanation.
But the longer he looked, the more serious his expression became.
Margaret stepped closer.
“Tell me what’s happening.””
Ellison swallowed.
“The transfer is legitimate.””
Nobody moved.
Rachel looked at him.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Daniel is dead.””
Ellison looked at the screen.
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Nobody had an answer.
Except maybe one person.
Eleanor.
She stood quietly near the basement door, watching the chaos unfold.
Margaret turned toward her.
“You knew.””
Eleanor looked at her.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected what?””
“That Daniel prepared something.””
Rachel stared at her.
“You knew he was planning this?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Not everything.””
Michael looked at his sister.
“Eleanor.””
She looked away.
“I knew Daniel was searching for the truth.””
Margaret’s voice became colder.
“And you didn’t tell me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Eleanor looked at her.
“Because I was afraid.””
The honesty surprised Margaret.
Everyone expected another excuse.
Another carefully prepared explanation.
But Eleanor looked genuinely afraid.
“Of what?””
Eleanor looked at Daniel’s name on the screen.
“Of what would happen if he succeeded.””
Ethan frowned.
“Why?””
Eleanor didn’t answer.
Margaret stepped closer.
“Because he would expose Thomas?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Margaret noticed.
“Then what?””
Eleanor looked at her.
“Because Daniel knew Thomas was only one piece.””
The room became silent.
Rachel looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Eleanor took a breath.
“It means Thomas wasn’t the person controlling everything.””
Michael’s face changed.
“You’re saying there was someone above him?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.””
Margaret felt a chill.
“How many secrets are there?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
The mansion suddenly shook.
A loud sound came from somewhere above them.
The security system failed completely.
The lights went dark.
Only the emergency lights remained.
Ethan moved toward the stairs.
“We need to leave.””
Margaret didn’t move.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at Daniel’s name.
“My son planned this.””
Rachel looked at her.
“Margaret.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“Daniel knew someone would come after this company. He knew they would try to erase everything.””
She pointed at the screen.
“He built a way to stop them.””
Attorney Ellison looked at the transfer details.
“Margaret…”
“What?””
He hesitated.
“This transfer has a condition.””
Everyone turned.
“What condition?”” Ethan asked.
Ellison read the screen.
“The company cannot be controlled by any single person.””
Margaret frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ellison continued.
“Daniel created a temporary leadership structure.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“He divided ownership?””
“Yes.””
“Between who?””
Ellison looked at the screen.
Then slowly answered.
“Everyone who was betrayed.””
The room went silent.
Margaret.
Rachel.
Michael.
Eleanor.
Ethan.
All of them.
Margaret looked shocked.
“Why would Daniel include Rachel?””
Rachel looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
Because she didn’t know either.
Ellison opened the next file.
A message appeared.
*TO THE PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY LOST EVERYTHING.*
Daniel’s voice played through the speakers.
Everyone froze.
His voice.
Alive again.
“Mom.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her face.
Daniel continued.
“If you’re hearing this, then the people I feared have finally made their move.””
Rachel stared at the speakers.
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“I know there will be anger. I know there will be questions.””
A pause.
“But I need everyone listening to understand one thing.””
The screen showed Daniel’s recorded face.
“The person who hurt this family is not the person everyone thinks.””
Margaret looked at Rachel.
Rachel looked back.
Daniel continued.
“Rachel.””
Her eyes widened.
“If you are hearing this, I need you to know something.””
She stepped closer.
Daniel’s voice softened.
“I know what you believed.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“I know you thought my family destroyed yours.””
She looked down.
“And I know why.””
A pause.
“But you were lied to.””
Rachel whispered:
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“Your father did not leave because my family betrayed him.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“He left because he discovered the truth.””
Rachel looked at him.
“What truth?””
Daniel answered:
“The person who destroyed our families was the same person who benefited from our hatred.””
Everyone looked toward Thomas’s name on the screen.
Daniel continued.
“Thomas Hale.””
The room remained silent.
Then Daniel said something unexpected.
“But Thomas was not acting alone.””
Margaret’s heart tightened.
“Who else?””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“The person who helped him was someone none of us wanted to suspect.””
A pause.
The screen flickered.
Then Daniel said:
“Because she was the person everyone trusted.””
Everyone turned.
Toward Eleanor.
Her face went pale.
Margaret stared.
“No.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Margaret—”
“No.””
Daniel’s voice continued.
“Eleanor.””
The room froze.
Rachel looked at her.
“You?””
Eleanor’s expression broke.
“I can explain.””
Michael looked devastated.
“You helped Thomas?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“No, I did not.””
Daniel continued.
“Eleanor did something wrong.””
Margaret listened.
“She hid information.””
Eleanor lowered her head.
“She protected someone.””
Michael stared.
“Who?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“My father.””
Margaret froze.
Robert.
Again.
Daniel continued.
“My father made mistakes. Terrible mistakes.””
Margaret felt her heart break.
“But he was not the person who destroyed us.””
The recording paused.
Then:
“He was trying to fix it.””
Rachel looked confused.
“Then why hide everything?””
Eleanor finally spoke.
“Because Robert asked me to.””
Everyone turned.
Margaret stared.
“Why?””
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Because he knew he was dying.””
The room became silent.
“He knew Thomas was dangerous.””
Margaret shook her head.
“Robert never told me.””
“No.””
Eleanor looked at her.
“He wanted to protect you.””
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Everyone always says that.””
Eleanor looked down.
“Because it’s true.””
The phrase hurt because Margaret had heard it too many times.
But this time, she believed it.
Daniel’s message continued.
“Mom, I know this will hurt.””
Margaret looked at the screen.
“But the truth is more important than protecting memories.””
A pause.
“You need to know what happened the night I died.””
Rachel’s eyes widened.
The room went still.
Daniel continued.
“My accident was not planned by Thomas.””
Margaret felt cold.
“Then who?””
The recording showed Daniel looking directly into the camera.
“I discovered someone was trying to stop me from exposing the truth.””
A pause.
“I confronted them.””
The screen flickered.
Then Daniel said:
“And they tried to kill me.””
Nobody moved.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Michael stared at the screen.
Margaret whispered:
“Who?””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“The person who caused my accident…”
The recording stopped.
A loading symbol appeared.
Everyone waited.
Then the final part began.
Daniel appeared again.
But this time, he looked different.
Like the recording had been made moments before he died.
“Mom.””
His eyes were tired.
“If you are seeing this part, it means I didn’t make it.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
Rachel started crying silently.
Daniel continued.
“I need you to do one thing.””
The screen zoomed closer.
“Trust the person you least expect.””
Everyone looked around.
Then Daniel said:
“Because the person who saved my life…”
A pause.
“…is the person who knows who tried to take it.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then the basement door opened.
A figure stood there.
Everyone turned.
Margaret’s heart stopped.
Because the person standing in the doorway was holding a medical file.
A file dated the night of Daniel’s accident.
The person looked at Rachel.
Then at Margaret.
And said:
“I can finally tell you what happened that night.””
It was the doctor who treated Daniel.
May you like
The doctor who signed his death certificate.
And he was not supposed to be alive.
