Chapter 6: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
The accusation landed harder than any scream could have.
Everyone looked at Richard.
The man who had spent decades standing beside the Hawthorne family.
The man who had attended every holiday dinner.
Every company celebration.
Every funeral.
The man nobody had suspected.
Richard stared at Rachel.
For a moment, he looked hurt.
Then angry.
“That’s a lie.””
Rachel did not move.
“You know it isn’t.””
Margaret sat silently, watching both of them.
She had spent years learning how people reacted when they were innocent.
An innocent person usually defended themselves with confusion.
A guilty person defended themselves with control.
Richard’s first instinct was not confusion.
It was anger.
That concerned her.
“Richard,” Margaret said.
His eyes moved toward her.
“Tell me why Rachel believes you betrayed Thomas.””
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was enough.
Margaret looked away.
A painful realization settled over her.
For years, she had believed betrayal would arrive loudly.
A stranger.
An enemy.
Someone obvious.
She had never considered that it might come from someone who knew exactly how to stand in the background.
Richard stepped forward.
“Margaret, you can’t seriously believe her.””
“I didn’t say I did.””
“But you’re looking at me like I’m guilty.””
Margaret’s voice remained calm.
“I’m looking at you like someone who knows more than he has admitted.””
The room became silent.
Richard looked around.
At the family members watching him.
At Clara.
At David.
Then back at Margaret.
“You want the truth?””
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.””
Richard laughed quietly.
A tired laugh.
“You always did.””
“Because truth matters.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“Because you always believed truth could fix everything.””
Margaret’s expression changed.
“That sounds like something Thomas would say.””
Richard looked down.
For a second, his anger disappeared.
Only regret remained.
“I loved my brother.””
Margaret nodded.
“I know.””
“And I hated him sometimes.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Richard continued.
“Thomas had everything. The company. The respect. You.””
He looked at Margaret.
“You were the person he trusted most.””
Margaret said nothing.
Richard walked toward the old wooden table inside the vault.
“He built this empire and everyone thought it was because he was brilliant.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“But the truth was, he was brilliant because he had you.””
The words were unexpected.
Margaret looked away.
Richard touched one of the old files.
“I spent my entire life feeling like the second son.””
Nobody interrupted.
“My father praised Thomas. Investors followed Thomas. Employees listened to Thomas.””
His voice became quieter.
“And I convinced myself I didn’t care.””
Rachel crossed her arms.
“But you did.””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked her.
“I cared.””
He looked at Margaret.
“But caring and betraying are not the same thing.””
Margaret studied him.
“Then tell me what happened.””
Richard sighed.
“Thomas discovered someone was moving company funds.””
Clara nodded slowly.
“The investigation.””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.””
“You knew about it.””
“I helped him.””
Margaret looked at him.
“Then why did you hide this from me?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation hurt more than the accusation.
“Because Thomas asked me.””
Margaret’s voice became colder.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked around the room.
“Thomas asked me not to worry.””
“Thomas asked me not to tell you.””
“Thomas asked me to wait.””
Her eyes returned to Richard.
“And now Thomas is gone, and everyone has an excuse for keeping secrets from me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
Richard lowered his head.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Margaret laughed softly.
“Everyone says that after they hurt you.””
The sentence stayed in the air.
David looked at her.
He had known Margaret for years.
He knew that tone.
The tone she used when she was not angry.
The tone she used when she was disappointed.
And disappointment was far more dangerous.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Ask him about the night Thomas died.””
Everyone turned.
Margaret looked at her.
“What?””
Rachel stared at Richard.
“You heard me.””
Richard’s face changed.
Margaret noticed.
“Richard?””
He looked away.
“Rachel doesn’t know what she’s talking about.””
Rachel laughed.
“You told me everything.””
Richard’s eyes snapped toward her.
“You don’t know anything.””
“Really?””
Rachel stepped closer.
“You told me Thomas was planning to remove me from the company.””
Margaret looked at Richard.
“Is that true?””
Richard was silent.
That was an answer.
Clara picked up the folder from the floor.
“According to these documents, Thomas was preparing changes to the board structure.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“Changes involving Rachel?””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked at Margaret.
“He was going to destroy everything I worked for.””
Margaret’s voice was quiet.
“Did you?””
Rachel looked at her.
“Did I what?””
“Did you believe destroying me was the only way to stop him?””
Rachel’s face tightened.
The silence was uncomfortable.
Then she said:
“I believed nobody would protect me.””
Margaret stared.
“You had options.””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“You don’t understand.””
She looked around the vault.
“At the end of the day, everyone here had a place.””
Her eyes moved to Margaret.
“You were the founder’s wife.””
To Richard.
“You were his brother.””
To Clara.
“You were the family attorney.””
Then back to herself.
“I was just the niece.””
Margaret softened slightly.
“Rachel.””
“No.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You don’t get to forgive me.””
Nobody expected that.
The anger was still there.
But underneath it was something else.
Shame.
“I made choices.””
She looked at the floor.
“Bad choices.””
Richard stared at her.
“You’re admitting it?””
Rachel looked up.
“Yes.””
The room froze.
“I wanted control.””
She swallowed.
“I wanted everyone to finally look at me the way they looked at you.””
Margaret looked at her.
“And you thought hurting me would give you that?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
Then the recorder on the table suddenly activated.
Everyone jumped.
Nobody had touched it.
A light blinked.
Thomas’s voice filled the vault.
“If you are hearing this, then the truth has finally reached the people who need it.””
Margaret froze.
Richard looked terrified.
Rachel stepped backward.
Thomas continued.
“I know there will be questions. I know there will be anger. But I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.””
Everyone looked at Richard.
But Thomas continued.
“Richard did make mistakes. He hid things from Margaret. He made choices I disagreed with.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“But he did not betray me.””
Margaret looked at him.
Richard looked stunned.
Thomas’s voice continued.
“The betrayal came from someone who had access to my private records, my medical information, and my final legal preparations.””
Clara’s face changed.
Her hand moved slowly to her mouth.
Margaret noticed.
“Clara?””
The attorney looked pale.
Thomas continued.
“Someone I trusted with every document in my life.””
The recorder clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then Thomas said:
“Margaret, if you are listening to this, you need to know the truth about my death.””
Everyone stopped.
Even Rachel.
Thomas’s voice became quieter.
“My heart condition was real.””
A pause.
“But the night I died…”
The recorder crackled.
Margaret held her breath.
“The medication I was given was not prescribed by my doctor.””
The room exploded into chaos.
“What?””
“Impossible.””
“Who gave it to him?””
David stepped forward.
Margaret couldn’t move.
Because suddenly, every memory of that night returned.
The hospital.
The doctors.
The phone calls.
The person who had insisted on handling the paperwork.
The person who had access.
The person who had been beside Thomas when he collapsed.
Thomas’s final words came through the recorder.
“Margaret, the person responsible for my death is someone you trusted enough to let into our home.””
The recorder stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then Clara whispered:
“No.””
Margaret looked at her.
“Clara?””
The attorney slowly backed away.
“I didn’t…”
Her voice trembled.
“I didn’t mean for him to die.””
The room went silent.
Margaret stared.
“What did you just say?””
Clara covered her mouth.
Realizing too late.
She had revealed more than she intended.
David moved immediately.
“Don’t let her leave.””
Clara looked at him.
And for the first time, the calm attorney everyone trusted was gone.
In her place was someone terrified.
Because the truth was finally catching up.
And Margaret understood something.
Rachel had been dangerous.
But Rachel had never been the biggest threat.
The person who knew the family secrets.
The person who controlled the documents.
May you like
The person who could rewrite the truth.
Had been standing beside her the entire time.
