Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan
The black sedan remained parked beside the curb.
The engine was still running.
The streetlights reflected against the windows, hiding whoever else might be inside.
Ethan stood frozen.
Mrs. Vance’s words echoed louder than the traffic around them.
*He was just the person I paid to make sure you never found out who did.*
Not who helped her.
Who did.
The distinction mattered.
Because for weeks, Ethan had believed the enemy was standing directly in front of him.
Mrs. Vance.
Liam.
But now there was another person.
Someone behind both of them.
Someone who had planned everything.
Liam stepped between Ethan and the car.
“You need to leave.””
Mrs. Vance laughed softly.
“Still pretending you’re protecting him?””
Liam’s jaw tightened.
“I’m done.””
The smile disappeared from her face.
“No.””
The single word carried more power than a shout.
“You’re scared.””
“I’m not.””
“You should be.””
Ethan looked between them.
The confidence Mrs. Vance had shown in the classroom was back.
But now he understood something.
She wasn’t fearless.
She was prepared.
She had planned for every reaction.
Every accusation.
Every person who might stand against her.
“You knew he would tell me,” Ethan said.
Mrs. Vance looked at him.
“Eventually.””
“And you still came here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She tilted her head.
“Because I wanted to see what kind of person you were.””
Ethan frowned.
“What?””
“For months, I wondered why everyone was suddenly convinced you were special.””
Her eyes moved over him.
“The teachers. The scholarship committee. Even students who barely knew you.””
She smiled faintly.
“They all saw something.””
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“I saw a student who got lucky.””
Ethan felt anger rising.
But he controlled it.
Because he knew something now.
People like Mrs. Vance wanted emotional reactions.
They used anger as proof.
“You’re wrong.””
Her expression hardened.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
The street became silent.
“You didn’t hate me because I wasn’t good enough.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“You hated me because I proved I was.””
For the first time, Mrs. Vance had no immediate response.
Only a brief flicker.
A crack.
Then she smiled.
“Careful.””
“Why?””
“Because confidence becomes arrogance very quickly.””
Ethan looked at Liam.
Then back at her.
“No. The difference is knowing the truth.””
Mrs. Vance stared at him.
Then she reached into her car and pulled out a folder.
She threw it onto the pavement.
It landed between them.
“Open it.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That you don’t know the people around you as well as you think.””
Liam’s face changed.
“No.””
Mrs. Vance looked at him.
“You already know what’s inside.””
Ethan noticed.
That reaction.
Not confusion.
Fear.
He picked up the folder.
Liam grabbed his arm.
“Ethan, wait.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What?””
Liam didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
Ethan opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Documents.
The first page showed a conversation between Mrs. Vance and someone named *A. Parker.*
Ethan stopped breathing.
Parker.
Liam’s last name.
He flipped through the pages.
The messages were clear.
*A. Parker: The boy is getting too much attention.*
*Mrs. Vance: I can handle the scholarship issue.*
*A. Parker: Make sure there are no surprises.*
Ethan looked at Liam.
“Your father?””
Liam didn’t speak.
He didn’t need to.
The answer was written everywhere.
“No,” Ethan whispered.
Liam looked away.
“I didn’t know.””
“About this?””
“No.””
“Your dad was working with her?””
Liam’s face was full of shame.
“I thought he was just taking money.””
Ethan looked back at the documents.
His hands shook.
All this time, Liam wasn’t the person pulling the strings.
He was another person caught inside them.
But that raised a bigger question.
Why?
Why would Liam’s father care about Ethan’s scholarship?
Why would he want Ethan to fail?
Mrs. Vance answered before Ethan asked.
“Because your success was dangerous.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Dangerous?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
She stepped closer.
“Your scholarship was based on more than grades.””
Ethan said nothing.
“It was based on recommendations, achievements, and your personal story.””
Mrs. Vance’s voice became colder.
“You represented everything people like him couldn’t control.””
“Who?””
She looked at the folder.
“Your father’s old business partner.””
Ethan froze.
“My father?””
The words came out before he could stop them.
Mrs. Vance watched his reaction carefully.
“Yes.””
Ethan’s mind raced.
His father had been gone for years.
Everyone knew the story.
A failed business.
Debt.
Leaving town.
Leaving Ethan and his mother behind.
But there were pieces Ethan had never understood.
Questions his mother always avoided.
Questions that suddenly felt important.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Mrs. Vance smiled.
“Ask your mother.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“You know something about my family?””
“I know enough.””
Liam stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Mrs. Vance ignored him.
“Your father made enemies.””
“My father wasn’t involved in this.””
“You’re sure?””
Ethan hesitated.
That was all she needed.
She smiled.
“Exactly.””
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Mrs. Vance’s.
She looked at the screen.
For a second, her confidence disappeared.
Just a second.
But Ethan saw it.
A message.
A name.
She quickly locked the phone.
“Who was that?”” Ethan asked.
“No one.””
“Then why did you look scared?””
She looked at him.
The same question he had asked Liam earlier.
And now she hated hearing it.
“You have no idea what you’ve stepped into.””
Ethan picked up the folder.
“Then explain.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because you won’t believe me.””
“Try.””
She looked at Liam.
Then at Ethan.
And something strange happened.
Her expression softened.
Not kindness.
Something closer to exhaustion.
“I spent twenty years watching people like your father destroy everything around them.””
Ethan frowned.
“My father wasn’t—”
“You don’t know him.””
The interruption was sharp.
“You know the version your mother allowed you to know.””
Ethan went quiet.
Because that hurt.
Not because it was true.
Because he had wondered the same thing before.
Mrs. Vance opened her car door.
“This was never about a scholarship.””
She looked at Ethan.
“The scholarship was just the easiest way to hurt you.””
Liam stared at her.
“Then what was the real goal?””
Mrs. Vance paused.
And for the first time, she looked uncertain.
“The truth.””
Then she got into the car.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Wait.””
The window lowered.
“Who is behind this?””
Mrs. Vance looked at him.
Her answer came quietly.
“The person who has been watching you your entire life.””
The car began moving.
Ethan stood there as the taillights disappeared.
Behind him, Liam whispered:
“There’s something else.””
Ethan turned.
“What?””
Liam looked terrified.
“I know why she said that.””
“Why?””
“Because my father wasn’t the only person receiving messages.””
Ethan stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Liam reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this in my dad’s office yesterday.””
Ethan took it.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the message was clear.
*If Ethan Cole discovers the truth about his father, everything falls apart.*
At the bottom was a signature.
A name Ethan recognized.
Not from school.
Not from his father’s past.
From his own home.
His mother.
Ethan looked up slowly.
“No.””
Liam said nothing.
Because he had already realized the same thing.
