Chapter 8: The Family Member Who Started It All
The words remained on the screen.
*“The person who destroyed our family is the one who taught us to call them family.””*
Nobody spoke.
The sentence felt heavier than any accusation.
Margaret stared at the message, searching through decades of memories.
Family.
That word had always meant safety.
Trust.
A place where secrets could be shared.
But Richard had used it as a warning.
Not a comfort.
Thomas looked at Margaret.
“Do you know who he meant?””
She didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Because the truth was that she had spent years believing she knew every person close to her.
And now she wasn’t sure.
“I need to see the rest.””
Thomas looked at the screen.
“There’s more.””
He scrolled down.
Another paragraph appeared.
*“I didn’t understand it at first because I was looking for someone who wanted power. But I was wrong.””*
Everyone leaned closer.
Richard’s words continued.
*“The person responsible didn’t want the company because of money. They wanted control because they believed the company was stolen from them.””*
Margaret’s expression changed.
Thomas noticed.
“Someone who believed they were wronged.””
Margaret nodded slowly.
“Evelyn.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard already said Evelyn wasn’t the one who started it.””
Margaret looked back at the screen.
The next sentence appeared.
*“They spent years waiting. Watching. Helping. They became someone we trusted because they knew trust would be the easiest way inside.””*
Rachel quietly whispered:
“They were close.””
Margaret looked at her.
“Yes.””
Rachel swallowed.
“Very close.””
The words unsettled everyone.
Thomas continued reading.
*“Mom, you always told me that the most dangerous person is not the person standing against you. It is the person standing beside you while pretending to protect you.””*
Margaret closed her eyes.
She had said those words.
Many times.
To Richard.
To Daniel.
To every young employee who asked for advice.
Now those words had returned to her.
A warning from her own son.
Thomas looked at the final lines.
Then stopped.
“What?””
Margaret asked.
Thomas didn’t answer.
“Thomas.””
He looked at her.
“The last part is encrypted.””
Rachel frowned.
“Encrypted?””
“Yes.””
“Can you open it?””
Thomas studied the file.
“Maybe.””
“How long?””
“Not long.””
He moved to another computer.
The room waited.
Minutes passed.
Then the screen changed.
A new document appeared.
Only one page.
At the top was a title.
*THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
Margaret immediately stood.
“Open it.””
Thomas clicked.
The document appeared.
Unlike the copies Rachel had prepared, this one looked old.
Official.
Authentic.
Thomas read silently.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Margaret asked.
He looked up.
“This changes everything.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Thomas turned the screen.
The first section showed the original ownership structure.
The company had never belonged entirely to Margaret.
There had always been another stakeholder.
A silent partner.
Someone whose identity had been hidden from the public records.
Margaret stared.
“No.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“I knew there was a private investment agreement when we started.””
She looked closer.
“But this name…”
She stopped.
Because she recognized it.
Thomas said the name aloud.
“Evelyn Carter.””
Rachel exhaled.
“So she was involved from the beginning.””
Margaret shook her head.
“Not like this.””
She looked at the document.
“Evelyn invested money when we were starting. But she sold her shares years later.””
Thomas checked the agreement.
“No.””
He pointed.
“She didn’t sell everything.””
Margaret leaned closer.
A hidden clause.
A clause nobody had seen.
A clause that gave Evelyn certain rights if the company reached a specific value.
Rachel stared.
“She could reclaim control?””
Thomas nodded.
“Under certain conditions.””
Margaret’s face hardened.
“And she created those conditions.””
The pieces connected.
The pressure.
The rumors.
The attempts to make her appear incapable.
The transfer documents.
Everything.
Rachel sat down slowly.
“So I was never taking control.””
Margaret looked at her.
“No.””
Rachel laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
“I was a replacement.””
Nobody responded.
Because she was right.
Evelyn had not needed Rachel to win.
She only needed Rachel to create chaos.
Thomas continued reading.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The clause requires proof that current leadership has failed to protect company interests.””
Margaret looked at the documents.
“So they needed evidence.””
Thomas nodded.
“They needed you to appear incapable.””
Rachel looked away.
“They used my plan as proof.””
“Yes.””
A long silence followed.
Then Rachel spoke.
“Why tell me any of this?””
Margaret looked at her.
“What?””
“If you already knew I was helping them.””
Margaret considered the question.
“Because today you learned something.””
Rachel frowned.
“What?””
“That being used feels very different when you are the person being used.””
The words hit harder than an insult.
Rachel looked down.
For once, she had nothing to say.
Suddenly, the office lights flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The computers went black.
Thomas immediately stood.
“What happened?””
Andrew checked the hallway.
“The power system is still running.””
Thomas looked at the computers.
“This was intentional.””
A few seconds later, the emergency lights turned on.
Then Margaret’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Nobody moved.
Thomas looked at her.
“Don’t answer.””
Margaret looked at the screen.
Then pressed the button.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
“Margaret.””
The entire room froze.
Margaret knew the voice.
She had not heard it in years.
“Evelyn.””
Rachel looked shocked.
Thomas stepped closer.
The voice continued.
“I was wondering how long it would take you.””
Margaret’s grip tightened around the phone.
“You sent the file.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A soft laugh.
“Because Richard always believed you deserved the truth.””
Margaret looked at the computer screen.
“Then why hide it for fourteen years?””
“Because timing matters.””
“That is not an answer.””
“No.””
Evelyn’s voice remained calm.
“But it is the truth.””
Margaret walked toward the window.
“You destroyed my family.””
A pause.
Then Evelyn answered:
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
Nobody spoke.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“You manipulated Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“You used Rachel.””
“Yes.””
“You changed company documents.””
A pause.
“Yes.””
Rachel looked stunned by the admission.
Evelyn continued.
“But I didn’t create the weakness. I only exposed it.””
Margaret’s voice lowered.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere I can finally see everything clearly.””
“Come here.””
A quiet laugh.
“You still give orders like everyone has to obey.””
“I’m asking.””
The line went silent.
Then Evelyn said:
“That is the first time you’ve ever asked me for anything.””
Margaret didn’t respond.
Evelyn continued.
“Maybe Richard was right about you.””
The name hurt.
Margaret closed her eyes.
“What did Richard say?””
“That you were powerful.””
A pause.
“But that you forgot powerful people can also lose people.””
The call became silent.
Then Evelyn said something that changed everything.
“Open the final page of the original agreement.””
Thomas looked at the document.
“What final page?””
Evelyn answered.
“The page Margaret never knew existed.””
Everyone froze.
Margaret stared at the computer.
“There is another page?””
“Yes.””
“Why would you tell me?””
Because I want you to understand.””
A pause.
“Richard didn’t die because he discovered the betrayal.””
Margaret’s heart stopped.
“What?””
Evelyn’s voice became quieter.
“He died because he discovered who was behind it.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Thomas immediately searched the document.
“There.””
A hidden page appeared.
A signature.
A name.
Margaret looked at it.
And the moment she saw it, she felt the world shift.
Because the person who had secretly controlled the company’s future for years was not Evelyn.
Not Rachel.
Not Daniel.
It was someone Margaret had spent her entire life protecting.
Someone whose betrayal was impossible to accept.
Thomas whispered the name.
And Margaret realized Richard had been trying to warn her all along.
May you like
The person who destroyed their family was not outside the door.
They had been inside the family from the beginning.
