Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Secret
The name fell into the darkness like a warning.
Robert.
I had never seen him before.
But everyone else reacted like they had just seen a ghost.
Dad stepped in front of me.
“Get out of my house.””
The shadow at the top of the stairs didn’t move.
Then a man slowly stepped into the faint light coming from the street outside.
He was older than Dad.
Maybe in his sixties.
His hair was gray, his suit was expensive, and his expression was calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm that made me nervous.
Because people who had nothing to hide usually didn’t walk into someone’s house in the middle of the night.
Robert looked around.
“Still the same house.””
Dad’s voice was sharp.
“How did you get in?””
Robert ignored the question.
His eyes moved toward me.
And when he saw me, his expression changed.
Not surprise.
Something closer to disappointment.
“So this is Nia.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
I hated the way he said my name.
Like I was a problem he had been trying to solve.
Dad stepped forward.
“Don’t look at her.””
Robert smiled slightly.
“You still protect her.””
“She’s my daughter.””
Robert’s smile disappeared.
“That’s what Claire wanted you to believe.””
The room went silent.
Dad’s hands curled into fists.
“Leave.””
Robert looked at Daniel.
“You brought him here?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn’t.””
Robert laughed quietly.
“Of course you didn’t.””
His eyes moved back to Dad.
“You always were the last person to know.””
I felt angry.
Not scared.
Angry.
Because every person who came into our lives seemed to believe they had the right to talk about me like I wasn’t there.
“What do you want?”” I asked.
Everyone looked at me.
Robert included.
For a moment, he looked surprised.
Then he smiled.
“You have Claire’s attitude.””
I didn’t know if that was an insult.
“What do you want?””
Robert looked at the stairs.
“I want what belongs to me.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Nothing belongs to you.””
Robert’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know that.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Robert, stop.””
Robert looked at him.
“You always did think you were the hero.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was calm.
“I’m just the person who remembers what happened.””
Robert’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.””
Dad looked between them.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Dad’s voice rose.
“I’m done asking politely.””
He pointed toward the door.
“You walk into my house, threaten my daughter, and expect me not to ask questions?””
Robert looked at him.
“I didn’t threaten her.””
He paused.
“I warned you.””
My skin went cold.
Dad moved closer.
“About what?””
Robert looked at me.
“About finding out the truth.””
I felt my heart beat faster.
“The truth about what?””
Robert didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his coat pocket.
Dad immediately reacted.
“What are you doing?””
Robert slowly pulled out a small envelope.
He held it up.
“I have something Claire wrote.””
My breath caught.
Another letter.
Another piece of my mother.
Dad stared.
“Where did you get that?””
Robert smiled.
“Your wife left many things behind.””
“She wasn’t your wife.””
“No.””
Robert looked at me.
“But she was part of my life.””
Dad’s face changed.
I could see him struggling.
Trying not to react.
Trying not to let Robert control the room.
“What did you do to Claire?”” Dad asked.
The question was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Robert’s smile disappeared.
“I loved Claire.””
Daniel scoffed.
“No.””
Robert looked at him.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know she was afraid of you.””
Robert’s face tightened.
For the first time, he looked angry.
“She was afraid because people filled her head with lies.””
Dad laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is lying except you?””
Robert ignored him.
He looked at me.
“Your mother wanted to tell you something.””
I froze.
“What?””
Dad immediately said:
“Don’t listen to him.””
But I couldn’t stop looking.
Because he was talking about Mom.
Robert lowered his voice.
“She knew she made mistakes.””
I swallowed.
“What mistakes?””
Robert stepped forward.
Dad blocked him.
“She chose the wrong people.””
His eyes moved toward Dad.
“Especially him.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“Enough.””
Robert held up the envelope.
“Read it.””
Nobody moved.
Dad stared at the envelope.
“Give it to me.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
“Then leave.””
Robert smiled.
“You really don’t understand.””
He looked around the room.
“The blue box isn’t about money.””
I felt my heartbeat change.
Everyone froze.
“You know what’s inside?”” Daniel asked.
Robert didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Dad looked at him.
“You have it.””
Robert smiled slightly.
“I know what’s inside.””
My hands tightened.
“Where is it?””
Robert looked at me.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Your mother hid the box because she knew I would come looking.””
Dad stared.
“Why?””
Robert looked at him.
“Because she knew what was written inside.””
“What was written inside?””
Robert’s expression became serious.
“The truth about Nia’s birth.””
The room went silent.
Again.
That phrase.
My birth.
My identity.
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had been writing.
Dad looked at me.
I saw the fear in his eyes.
But this time, I didn’t look away.
“What is he talking about?”” I asked.
Dad opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That hurt more than anything.
Because I needed him to say something.
Anything.
Robert noticed.
“You see?””
He looked at me.
“Even now, he doesn’t know what to tell you.””
“Stop,” Dad said.
But Robert continued.
“Claire was going to tell you everything when you were older.””
“Everything about what?””
Robert looked at the envelope.
“About the night you were born.””
My entire body went still.
I remembered that night only from stories.
A hospital.
A happy father.
A mother who cried when she held me.
But suddenly there was something missing.
Something everyone had avoided.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Robert, you don’t know what Claire intended.””
Robert laughed.
“I knew Claire better than any of you.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.””
Robert shook his head.
“She came to me first.””
Dad looked at him.
“What?””
Robert smiled.
“Before she went to you.””
The room changed.
Because that was new.
Even Dad didn’t know.
“You’re lying.””
Robert shrugged.
“Maybe.””
He looked at me.
“But the blue box will prove it.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone jumped.
It was Daniel’s.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” Dad asked.
Daniel answered.
Nobody spoke while he listened.
Then he slowly lowered the phone.
“The storage unit.””
Dad stepped forward.
“What about it?””
Daniel looked at me.
“It was opened.””
My heart sank.
“When?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Ten minutes ago.””
Nobody moved.
Robert smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A victorious one.
Because he knew something we didn’t.
Dad looked at him.
“You sent someone.””
Robert said nothing.
But he didn’t need to.
Then Daniel looked at the receipt again.
His face turned pale.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
He held up the paper.
“The storage unit wasn’t just rented under Claire’s name.””
Dad took it.
I watched his eyes scan the information.
Then he stopped.
“What?””
His voice barely came out.
I stepped closer.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
And I knew something was wrong.
Very wrong.
“The emergency contact.””
He handed the paper to Daniel.
Daniel read it.
Then he looked at me.
The silence was unbearable.
“Who?”” I whispered.
Daniel slowly answered.
“The emergency contact for the storage unit…”
May you like
He looked at Robert.
“…was Nia’s biological father.””
