The Secret Behind Her Pain / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Place She Was Taken

The photo stayed on my screen.

I stared at it so long that my eyes started to hurt.

But I couldn’t look away.

Sophie.

My little girl.

Standing in an unfamiliar room.

Her pink pajamas.

Her stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.

Her face turned slightly away from the camera.

And behind her…

A person wearing Michael’s jacket.

My mind raced.

“No.””

The word escaped my mouth.

Emily stepped closer.

“What?””

I handed her the phone.

The moment she saw the picture, all color disappeared from her face.

“That’s not our house.””

“No.””

My mother leaned over.

“Where was this taken?””

I zoomed in.

The details were small.

A gray wall.

A wooden shelf.

A window in the background.

Then I noticed something.

A small painting hanging near the window.

A mountain landscape.

I knew it.

My stomach dropped.

“Michael’s apartment.””

Everyone looked at me.

“What?”” Emily whispered.

I looked at the picture again.

“That painting.””

I pointed.

“He has that painting in his living room.””

My mother immediately grabbed her coat.

“We need to go.””

I was already moving.

But Michael stepped in front of the door.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“What?””

His expression was different now.

No confidence.

No calm smile.

Just fear.

“Listen to me.””

I stared at him.

“My daughter is somewhere with you.””

“No.””

“Then explain the picture.””

He looked at the phone.

Then away.

“I didn’t send that.””

“But you know where she is.””

Silence.

That was enough.

My mother’s voice became cold.

“Where is she?””

Michael looked at her.

“I was trying to protect her.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“From what?””

He looked at Emily.

“From you.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You’re still doing this?””

“You don’t know what she’s like.””

“No.””

Emily’s voice shook.

“But Sophie does.””

Michael’s face hardened.

“You think you understand everything because you watched one video?””

“One video was enough.””

“No, it wasn’t.””

His voice became louder.

“You don’t know what happened before that.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

“I made mistakes.””

The room went silent.

I waited.

He looked down.

“But I never wanted to hurt her.””

I stepped closer.

“Where is she?””

Michael didn’t answer.

“Where is my daughter?””

“I need you to understand.””

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“You don’t get to explain your feelings before telling me where she is.””

He looked at me.

Then quietly said:

“She’s at my apartment.””

My entire body went cold.

“Why?””

“She came to me.””

“Why?””

“Because she was scared.””

The words hit me.

Not because they surprised me.

Because they confirmed what I already knew.

My daughter had been looking for safety.

And somehow, the person who caused the fear convinced her he was the safest place to go.

“How did she get there?””

Michael hesitated.

“I picked her up.””

My hands tightened.

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“After I came home?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped toward him.

“You took my daughter after I came home?””

“No.””

“Then when?””

Michael looked away.

“Before you arrived.””

The room went silent.

Emily whispered:

“You knew he was coming home.””

Michael didn’t respond.

My mother looked at him.

“You knew.””

Still nothing.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

The message.

The warning.

The urgency.

Michael wasn’t trying to help.

He was trying to control the story.

“Why did you send that message?”” I asked.

Michael looked confused.

“What message?””

“The one telling me not to believe the wrong person.””

He looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“I never sent you anything.””

I grabbed my phone.

Showed him the message.

He stared at it.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely shocked.

“That’s not my number.””

Nobody spoke.

The room changed.

Because suddenly there was another person involved.

Someone else watching.

Someone else moving pieces.

“Who sent this?”” Emily whispered.

Michael looked at the photo.

Then his expression changed.

“The jacket.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“That’s not mine.””

I frowned.

“You just said it was your apartment.””

“Yes.””

“Then what?””

Michael pointed at the picture.

“The jacket.””

I looked closer.

He was right.

The jacket looked like Michael’s.

But something was different.

A logo.

A small logo on the sleeve.

I had seen it before.

My mother’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She stepped closer to the phone.

“That’s not Michael’s jacket.””

Her voice shook.

“That belongs to your father.””

The room went silent.

My father.

The man who had been dead for five years.

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother looked terrified.

“It’s his old work jacket.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

She grabbed the phone.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

Her voice dropped.

“There’s something I never told you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?””

She looked at Michael.

Then at Emily.

Then at me.

“Your father didn’t die alone.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“There were things happening in this family before you knew.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I backed away.

“My father has nothing to do with this.””

Michael whispered:

“He does.””

I looked at him.

“What did you say?””

Michael swallowed.

“The reason I kept trying to protect Sophie…”

He looked ashamed.

“Was because I knew something about Dad.””

The room felt unreal.

“What does my father have to do with my daughter?””

Michael looked toward the door.

Then quietly said:

“I think Sophie found out.””

Emily’s face changed.

“Found out what?””

Michael didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

He looked at me.

Then said:

“Why our father disappeared before he died.””

My heart pounded.

“My father died.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Michael’s voice was barely audible.

“I’m saying the person who taught us to keep secrets…”

He looked toward Sophie’s photo on my phone.

“May be the reason Sophie learned to be afraid.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

Silence.

Then a child’s voice.

A voice I would recognize anywhere.

“Dad?””

My knees almost gave out.

“Sophie?””

A small sob.

“Dad, I’m sorry.””

“No, sweetheart. Listen to me. Where are you?””

“I tried to tell you.””

My eyes filled.

“I know.””

“I tried.””

“I know.””

Then another voice came from the background.

A voice that made everyone in the room freeze.

My mother covered her mouth.

Michael stepped backward.

Emily whispered:

“No…”

Because we all recognized it.

An old voice.

A familiar voice.

A voice that should have been impossible.

Then the person spoke.

“Daniel.””

The phone shook in my hand.

Because the voice belonged to my father.

The man we buried five years ago.

May you like

And he said:

“You should have listened when I told you this family was built on a lie.””
