Chapter 8: The Voice That Wasn’t Adrian’s
For a moment, nobody understood what Mia had said.
Not even Adrian.
He just stood there, staring at his daughter.
“Someone… used my voice?””
Mia nodded slowly.
Her eyes were fixed on the ground.
“Yes.””
Adrian knelt down immediately.
“Mia, sweetheart, tell me exactly what happened.””
She looked nervous.
Like she was afraid the answer would hurt someone.
Clara placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“It’s okay. Take your time.””
Mia looked at Clara.
Then she looked back at her father.
“This morning, before we went outside, I went back to the classroom because I forgot my water bottle.””
Adrian frowned.
“You didn’t tell anyone?””
Mia shook her head.
“I was only gone for a minute.””
Clara looked worried.
“Why didn’t I see you?””
“Because everyone was lining up.””
That made sense.
There had been so much movement.
So many children.
So many parents.
A single minute could disappear.
“What happened next?”” Adrian asked.
Mia squeezed his hand.
“I heard your voice.””
Everyone became still.
“My voice?”” Adrian repeated.
“Yes.””
“What did it say?””
Mia swallowed.
“It said, ‘Mia, come here. Don’t tell Mrs. Clara what happened.’”
Clara’s face changed.
“And you heard this from where?””
Mia pointed toward the classroom.
“From the hallway.””
Adrian looked confused.
“But I wasn’t there.””
“I know.””
Mia nodded.
“I thought you were on the phone.””
A chill moved through me.
Because that was the key.
Whoever did this didn’t just know Adrian.
They knew Mia.
They knew she would recognize his voice.
They knew she trusted him.
Mr. Bennett looked serious.
“Could it have been a recording?””
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“Someone could have played an audio clip.””
The idea made everyone uncomfortable.
Because it meant this had been planned even more carefully than anyone realized.
Rachel looked at Olivia.
“You knew about this?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
“You’re lying.””
“No, I’m not.””
For the first time, Olivia looked genuinely frightened.
“I thought the plan was only to expose Clara.””
Clara stared at her.
“Expose me?””
Olivia looked away.
“I thought people would finally question you.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“I know.””
Olivia’s voice became quieter.
“I know now.””
The situation had changed.
This was no longer about one person’s anger.
It was about someone who had taken everyone’s weaknesses and turned them into weapons.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I never agreed to involve Mia.””
Nobody looked at her.
Because everyone remembered what she had done.
But she continued.
“I was supposed to make Clara look careless. That was all.””
Adrian looked at her.
“And you thought that was acceptable?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“No.””
It was the first time she didn’t defend herself.
“I was wrong.””
Clara looked at her.
“Why did you listen?””
Vanessa was silent.
Then she answered.
“Because Rachel knew something about me.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“She knew about my daughter.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa continued.
“My daughter has been struggling at school. I had a private situation with the administration. Rachel found out.””
Adrian frowned.
“And she threatened to expose it?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She said if I didn’t help her, everyone would know.””
Clara looked at Rachel.
“You collected secrets.””
Rachel didn’t deny it.
“I needed leverage.””
“No.””
Clara’s voice was firm.
“You wanted control.””
Rachel looked away.
Because the difference mattered.
Mr. Bennett stepped forward.
“We need to contact the police.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a step back.
“No.””
Mr. Bennett remained calm.
“A child was manipulated. A false accusation was created. This has gone beyond a school matter.””
Rachel looked around.
At the parents.
At the teachers.
At Clara.
Then at Mia.
And for the first time, the anger disappeared.
She looked scared.
“I didn’t mean for it to become this.””
Clara stared at her.
“But it did.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I just wanted you to understand what it felt like.””
Clara’s expression softened slightly.
“I understand more than you think.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No, you don’t.””
Clara took a breath.
“I lost sleep over what happened to you.””
Rachel looked surprised.
“I wrote letters.””
“What?””
“I tried to explain to the school board that you needed help, not just punishment.””
Rachel stared at her.
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because you never answered my calls.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Because suddenly, the story had another layer.
Two people had been hurt.
Two people had believed the worst about each other.
And while they were fighting, someone else had used that pain.
But one question remained.
Who had used Adrian’s voice?
Mr. Bennett looked toward the school.
“We need to check the classroom.””
Everyone followed him inside.
The hallway felt completely different from that morning.
Earlier, it had been filled with children running and laughing.
Now every sound felt too loud.
The clicking of shoes.
The hum of the lights.
The opening and closing of doors.
They entered Mia’s classroom.
Everything looked normal.
Desks.
Backpacks.
Colorful posters on the walls.
It was strange how ordinary it looked.
A place where something terrible had happened.
Mr. Bennett searched near the teacher’s desk.
“Where was Mia when she heard the voice?””
Mia pointed.
“Near there.””
He walked over.
Then he noticed something.
A small device sitting behind a stack of books.
“What is this?””
Everyone moved closer.
It was a tiny speaker.
Not a classroom device.
Not school equipment.
Clara picked it up carefully.
“There’s a memory card.””
Mr. Bennett looked at Adrian.
“Do you recognize it?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
The principal removed the card.
Then stopped.
“Before we play this, everyone should know this may be evidence.””
Nobody answered.
They all knew.
He connected it to the classroom computer.
A file appeared.
One audio recording.
The name was simple.
*Mia.*
Adrian’s face went pale.
“Play it.””
Mr. Bennett clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice appeared.
A voice everyone recognized.
Adrian’s voice.
“Mia.””
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“Come here. Don’t tell Clara.””
Mia covered her mouth.
“That’s it.””
Adrian looked sick.
Because hearing his own voice used like that was something he never imagined.
The recording continued.
“Clara doesn’t always tell the truth.””
Clara closed her eyes.
The words hurt.
Not because they were real.
Because someone had chosen those exact words to destroy trust.
Then the recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Until Ethan noticed something.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
“There’s more.””
He pointed at the computer screen.
“The file has another layer.””
Mr. Bennett frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Ethan stepped closer.
“My dad edits videos. Sometimes files have hidden information.””
Nobody questioned how a ten-year-old knew that.
He was right.
The file properties were open.
And underneath the recording details was a name.
The person who created the file.
Everyone leaned closer.
The name appeared on the screen.
Not Rachel.
Not Olivia.
Not Vanessa.
Someone else.
Someone nobody had suspected.
Adrian stared at the name.
Then slowly whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Clara looked at him.
“Who is it?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
His face had gone completely pale.
Because the person behind everything…
was someone he trusted.
Someone who had been standing beside him the entire time.
Someone who knew exactly how to make him doubt Clara.
Finally, Adrian said the name.
“Daniel.””
Mia looked confused.
“Who is Daniel?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
Daniel wasn’t just someone from school.
May you like
Daniel was family.
And he had been the one person Adrian never thought he needed to question.
