Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I drove straight to Vanessa's apartment.
She lived in a modern building downtown, on the ninth floor. I'd helped her move there a year earlier.
I'd chosen the curtains.
Installed the television.
Built the bookshelf she'd ordered online.
I remembered spending three hours trying to fix a drawer that wouldn't close properly while she stood in the kitchen complaining about the dust.
At the time, I had thought those were the small details of building a life together.
Now, standing outside her door, I wondered how much of that life had been built on things she hadn't told me.
I knocked.
Once.
Twice.
She opened the door wearing a gray sweater and black leggings.
Her eyes widened when she saw me.
“Ethan.””
“Did you know Richard before we got engaged?””
She looked at the photograph in my hand.
Her expression changed immediately.
“Where did you get that?””
“Answer the question.””
She stepped aside.
“Come in.””
“I'd rather stay here.””
“Please.””
I walked inside.
The apartment looked exactly as it had when I last visited. A bowl of lemons sat on the kitchen counter. Her wedding magazines were stacked neatly beside the sofa.
A framed photograph of us stood near the television.
It had been taken during our vacation in Maine.
I was smiling at the camera.
Vanessa was kissing my cheek.
I looked at the picture and felt nothing.
“How long?”” I asked.
She closed the door.
“Since February.””
“That's four months.””
“I know.””
“Before we got engaged.””
She sat down.
“Yes.””
I remained standing.
“Why?””
She rubbed her palms against her sweater.
“Richard contacted me through social media. He said he was your biological father and wanted to meet you.””
“And you thought the best way to help was to hide it?””
“At first, I didn't know what to believe.””
“So you met him.””
“Yes.””
“How often?””
“More than I told you.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“How many times?””
She looked down.
“Seven.””
Seven meetings.
Seven chances to tell me.
Seven times she had gone home and kissed me without mentioning the man she was meeting behind my back.
“What did he want?””
“He said he had been trying to reconnect with you. He told me Daniel had blocked him for years.””
“Did he show you the hospital record?””
Her head snapped up.
“You saw that?””
“So you did know.””
She nodded.
“He showed me a copy.””
“And what did he tell you?””
“That he was young and scared. He said he hadn't understood how sick you were.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Did he mention my mother begging him to come?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Did he mention Dad driving through the night to get to the hospital?””
“He said Daniel was already involved with your mother.””
“That doesn't change anything.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
She began crying.
“Ethan, I never wanted to hurt you.””
I pulled the photograph from my pocket.
“What is this?””
She stared at it.
“Richard and I met at a restaurant.””
“Four months ago.””
“Yes.””
“What was in that folder?””
She hesitated.
“Documents relating to your mother's trust.””
I placed the photograph on the coffee table.
“Why was my mother's name on a folder between you and a man I had never met?””
“Because Richard believed I could help him reach you.””
I stared at her.
“And the money?””
“He offered to pay me if I could persuade you to meet him.””
“You said fifty thousand.””
“That was later.””
“How much before that?””
She swallowed.
“Ten thousand.””
I stepped away.
“You were getting paid to manipulate me.””
“No. I didn't accept the money.””
“Did you accept anything?””
She looked toward the kitchen.
Then she nodded.
“What?””
“A necklace.””
I felt something inside me go cold.
“A necklace?””
“He gave it to me after our third meeting. He said it belonged to your mother.””
I stared at her.
“Where is it?””
She stood and walked toward the bedroom.
A minute later, she returned with a small jewelry box.
Inside was a delicate gold necklace with a tiny oval pendant.
I recognized it immediately.
My mother had worn it at every family Christmas dinner I could remember.
I'd seen it in photographs after she died.
“Where did he get this?””
“He said he'd kept it after she died.””
My fingers trembled as I picked it up.
A small inscription had been engraved on the back.
*M + D. Forever.*
Margaret and Daniel.
I looked at Vanessa.
“This wasn't Richard's to give you.””
“I know that now.””
“When did you know?””
She looked away.
“After I met Daniel.””
I went still.
“You met my father?””
She nodded.
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
“Without telling me?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Richard wanted me to get information from him. I thought maybe if I spoke to Daniel, I could understand both sides.””
“What happened?””
She sat down.
“He was polite. He made tea. He showed me photographs of your childhood.””
My throat tightened.
“And?””
“He told me about the hospital.””
I looked at her.
“He told you what Richard had done?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“He showed me the original letter from your mother. The one about the adoption.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“Which letter?””
“The one that said Richard had signed his parental rights away voluntarily.””
I leaned forward.
“Did you read it?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
She reached into a drawer and removed a folded paper.
“I took a photograph.””
She handed me her phone.
The image showed a handwritten letter.
Mom's handwriting.
*Daniel,*
**I know you fear that Richard may come back one day and confuse Ethan. But I want you to understand something. Our son is not a prize to be won, and he is not a debt to be collected.
Richard signed the papers because he no longer wanted responsibility. You signed them because you wanted to spend the rest of your life loving him. There is no comparison between those choices.**
I stared at the last line.
*Please never let Ethan believe he owes anybody his place in this family.*
I felt my eyes sting.
Vanessa watched me.
“Your father cried when he showed me that.””
I looked up.
“What did you say?””
“Nothing.””
“Did you apologize?””
She nodded.
“What did he say?””
“He told me I didn't need to apologize to him. He said he hoped I'd learn to see what you saw in him.””
I looked away.
Even now, Dad had found a way to protect her from feeling worse.
I placed the phone on the table.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you'd leave me.””
I almost laughed.
“You thought I would leave you if I knew you were meeting my biological father?””
She nodded.
“Richard kept telling me you would never understand. He said you were too attached to Daniel.””
“Attached?””
“He said Daniel had made you dependent on him.””
I shook my head.
“Dad taught me how to ride a bicycle. He taught me to drive. He worked two jobs so I could go to college. He held my mother's hand while she died.””
My voice broke.
“That's not dependency. That's love.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know.””
“No, I don't think you do.””
I picked up the necklace and placed it back in the box.
“Where is the second letter?””
She looked up.
“What second letter?””
“The one Richard said proves Daniel wasn't supposed to raise me.””
“I don't know.””
“Did he show it to you?””
“No.””
“Did he ever explain why he wanted the original will?””
“He said your mother had written something about the trust that could change everything.””
“What exactly?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she took a long breath.
“He said the trust wasn't originally created for you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He claimed your mother changed the beneficiary shortly before she died.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Did you see proof?””
“No.””
“Then why believe him?””
“Because he had documents. Because he knew things about your childhood. Because he said he'd been trying to contact you for years.””
She looked at me.
“And because I thought there was a chance you'd want to know him.””
I shook my head.
“Knowing him isn't the same as trusting him.””
“I understand that now.””
I started toward the door.
Vanessa stood.
“Ethan, wait.””
I stopped.
She reached into her handbag and removed a small USB drive.
“What is this?””
“A recording.””
I looked at it.
“Of what?””
“My last meeting with Richard.””
“You recorded him?””
She nodded.
“Why?””
“Because he was starting to scare me.””
I turned the USB drive over in my fingers.
“What did he say?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He told me what he intended to do after the wedding.””
I stared at her.
“Go on.””
“He said once you were married, you would be easier to control because you'd be building your future around me. He wanted me to convince you to sign a document allowing him access to the trust.””
I felt sick.
“And the money?””
“He said he would pay me after you signed.””
I closed my hand around the drive.
“Did you agree?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
She looked at me, tears running down her face.
“Because I finally understood he didn't want a son. He wanted an asset.””
For a moment, I didn't know what to say.
Then she added something that made me turn back.
“Ethan, there's something else on that recording.””
“What?””
“Richard talks about your mother's last visit to the hospital.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“He says she asked to see him shortly before she died.””
I stared at her.
“That's impossible.””
“He said he went.””
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
Mom had been sick for months.
I'd been at her bedside.
Dad had been there almost every day.
I'd never heard Richard's name mentioned.
Vanessa held my gaze.
“He claims your mother gave him something before she died.””
“What?””
She shook her head.
“He doesn't say.””
I looked down at the USB drive.
“Where was this meeting?””
“A restaurant near the river.””
“When?””
“Two weeks before the wedding.””
I put the drive in my pocket.
Then I turned toward the door.
“Ethan?””
I looked back.
Vanessa was standing beside the framed photograph of our vacation.
“I'm sorry I broke his gift,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“You didn't just break a box, Vanessa.””
She lowered her eyes.
“You broke the one thing he brought to give me from my mother.””
I left.
That evening, Dad and I watched the recording on his old laptop.
The screen flickered several times before the audio began.
Richard's voice came through clearly.
*“Once Ethan signs the paperwork, everything will be settled.””*
Vanessa asked something I couldn't hear.
Richard laughed.
*“Daniel won't be able to interfere anymore. Margaret promised me that years ago.””*
Dad gripped the edge of the table.
Then Richard said something that made the color drain from his face.
*“Besides, Daniel knows exactly why Margaret chose me to be Ethan's father. He just hopes the boy never finds out.””*
Dad stopped the recording.
I stared at him.
“What does he mean?””
Dad's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

Then, very quietly, he said:
“Your mother made Richard a promise before you were born.””
