Chapter 6: The Man My Father Buried

The photograph on Sarah’s phone felt heavier than paper.

Even though it was only an image.

Even though it was only pixels on a screen.

It felt like someone had reached into my chest and pulled out the last piece of certainty I had left.

I stared at it.

Again.

And again.

Daniel standing outside my father’s office.

Three weeks before our wedding.

And beside him…

A man I recognized immediately.

A man whose face I had seen in old photographs.

A man whose name I had heard whispered in conversations that stopped whenever I entered the room.

My uncle.

Thomas Carter.

My father’s younger brother.

The man everyone told me had disappeared years ago.

The man everyone told me was gone.

My mouth went dry.

“That’s impossible.””

Nobody answered.

Sarah looked at me carefully.

“Ava…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“No, that can’t be him.””

The photograph showed his face clearly.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

I had grown up seeing pictures of him.

My father kept one framed photograph hidden in his office drawer.

A picture of two brothers standing beside the first building they ever renovated together.

My father smiling.

Thomas laughing.

Before everything changed.

Before the family split apart.

Before my father removed his brother from the company.

Before Thomas vanished.

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then immediately looked away.

That small movement told me more than words could.

“You knew.””

His eyes lifted.

“Ava…”

“You knew he was alive.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I…”

“You knew.””

The silence was unbearable.

The officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitmore, do you know the person in this photograph?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Finally, he nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Who is he?””

Daniel looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

Real regret.

“His name is Thomas Carter.””

Hearing my uncle’s name spoken aloud felt like a door opening to a room I had never entered.

The officer looked at Sarah.

“Is this person related to you?””

Sarah answered before I could.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“He is Ava’s uncle.””

Evelyn suddenly became very quiet.

Too quiet.

I turned toward her.

“You knew too.””

She didn’t respond.

“Evelyn.””

Her jaw tightened.

“I knew of him.””

The words were carefully chosen.

Not “I knew him.””

Not “I met him.””

“I knew of him.””

Sarah noticed too.

“You’ve had contact with Thomas Carter?””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“That is not relevant.””

The officer immediately replied.

“It may be.””

For once, Evelyn didn’t have control of the conversation.

She hated that.

I could see it.

Her entire life had been built around being the person with the most information in the room.

But tonight, secrets were escaping faster than she could contain them.

I turned back to Daniel.

“Start talking.””

He looked exhausted.

“Ava.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to protect me from the truth anymore.””

His face fell.

I continued.

“Every time something happened, you said you were trying to protect me.””

My voice shook.

“But all you did was decide what I was allowed to know.””

Daniel looked down.

Then finally spoke.

“I met Thomas before I met you.””

The room went silent.

“When?””

“Six months before our first date.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Because my mother introduced us.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She didn’t deny it.

The betrayal felt almost physical.

“You introduced my uncle to Daniel?””

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“I introduced two people who had mutual interests.””

“Mutual interests?””

My voice rose.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at me coldly.

“It means your family was not as perfect as you believed.””

I laughed quietly.

“You still don’t understand, do you?””

“What?””

“You think knowing my family’s problems gives you the right to hurt me.””

She looked away.

But she didn’t apologize.

Daniel continued.

“Thomas wanted access to certain information.””

My stomach tightened.

“What information?””

“About your father’s estate.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not love.

Not fate.

Not coincidence.

Information.

Everything always came back to information.

“He wanted to know what your father left you.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And you helped him?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“At first, I didn’t know why he wanted to know.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

“You knew he was my uncle.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was connected to my family.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he wanted information about my inheritance.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

I stepped backward.

“So when you met me…”

“Ava.””

“Was I just a way in?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

But I couldn’t tell if it was love or desperation.

“I swear to you, that wasn’t how it started.””

I looked at him.

“How did it start then?””

Daniel had no answer.

Again.

That was becoming the most painful pattern of my marriage.

The questions that mattered most always left him silent.

The officer interrupted.

“We need to understand Thomas Carter’s involvement.””

Sarah nodded.

“I agree.””

She looked at me.

“Ava, your uncle was removed from Carter Development fifteen years ago.””

I knew that.

Everyone knew that.

“My father said he stole from the company.””

“Yes.””

Sarah paused.

“But there was never enough evidence for criminal charges.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“My father never pressed charges?””

“No.””

That confused me.

My father had always believed in consequences.

Why would he let someone who betrayed him walk away?

Sarah continued.

“Your father believed Thomas had help.””

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

“No.””

Sarah didn’t answer.

But she didn’t need to.

Daniel looked away.

And I knew.

I knew there was more.

“What did my father discover?””

Sarah took a breath.

“Your father believed someone inside the company was working with Thomas to move assets without authorization.””

My skin went cold.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Your father was wrong about many things.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“He became obsessed with betrayal.””

I stared.

“Because people betrayed him.””

She ignored that.

“After Thomas disappeared, your father became paranoid.””

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“That is an opinion.””

Evelyn smiled.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“That is what happened.””

Then she reached into her purse.

Everyone watched.

The officer immediately moved.

“Mrs. Whitmore, slowly.””

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

“I’m not carrying a weapon.””

She removed an old envelope.

A yellowed envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“This is why your father didn’t trust Thomas.””

I looked at it.

“What is that?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

Evelyn looked directly at me.

“From your father.””

My heart stopped.

Another letter.

Another secret.

Another piece of a life I thought I understood.

Sarah moved toward it.

“Where did you get this?””

Evelyn smiled.

“Thomas gave it to me.””

The room went silent.

The officer looked at her.

“You’ve had this the entire time?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t provide it during the investigation?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because I wanted to see what Ava would do.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“I wanted to know if she was truly her father’s daughter.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You destroyed my marriage to test me?””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“I exposed your marriage because your father was right.””

I froze.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Daniel was never the biggest threat.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Mom.””

She ignored him.

“The person who has been manipulating everything from the beginning…”

She placed her hand on the envelope.

“…is the person who taught everyone else how to lie.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

Evelyn slowly turned the envelope over.

There was a name written on the back.

A name that made Sarah’s expression change.

A name that made Daniel close his eyes.

A name that made my entire body go cold.

Because the handwriting was my father’s.

May you like

And the name written beneath it was mine.

“Ava Carter.””
