Chapter 8: The Child Nobody Spoke About
For several seconds, Claire forgot how to breathe.
The photograph remained on the table between her and Rachel.
The words on the back stared back at her.
“If they ever discover what happened to the first Carter child, they will come for the second one.””
The first Carter child.
Those four words changed everything.
Claire had spent her entire life believing she knew her family.
She knew her parents.
She knew her sister.
She knew every holiday tradition, every argument, every memory.
But suddenly, she was standing in the middle of a story that had started before she was even born.
And someone had spent years making sure she never found out.
“Rachel,” Claire whispered.
Her sister looked at her.
“Yes?””
“Who is the first Carter child?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Claire stood up.
“Rachel.””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Rachel looked upset.
“Claire, I swear.””
“You had this photo.””
“I didn’t know what it meant.””
“You had a letter from Dad.””
“I didn’t know about the letter until yesterday.””
Claire stepped back.
Her mind was racing.
All the secrets.
All the hidden messages.
All the strange connections.
Someone had known about this.
Someone had been protecting this secret.
Or using it.
“Why didn’t our parents ever tell us?””
Rachel looked at the photograph.
“Maybe they were trying to protect us.””
“Protect us from what?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Because neither of them knew.
A quiet sound came from the hallway.
Both women turned.
The front door was slightly open.
Claire’s heart jumped.
“Did you leave it unlocked?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
They looked at each other.
Then slowly walked toward the door.
Rachel grabbed the nearest object from the table.
A heavy candle holder.
Claire immediately whispered:
“Rachel.””
“I know.””
They stepped into the hallway.
Nobody was there.
The street outside was empty.
But something had changed.
The folder on the table behind them was open.
Claire froze.
“Wait.””
They rushed back.
The photograph was gone.
Rachel’s face turned pale.
“No.””
Claire looked around.
The window.
The door.
The room.
Someone had entered.
Someone had taken the picture.
And they hadn’t come for anything else.
Only that.
Claire’s phone rang.
The sudden sound made both women jump.
Unknown number.
Claire answered.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then a voice.
A woman’s voice.
“You should have left the past buried.””
Claire’s blood ran cold.
“Who is this?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“Where is the photo?””
A quiet laugh.
“You still don’t understand.””
Claire tightened her grip on the phone.
“Understand what?””
The voice became colder.
“Your daughter was never the target.””
Claire stopped.
“What?””
“Mia was only the beginning.””
Rachel looked at Claire.
The call was on speaker.
“Who are you?”” Claire demanded.
The woman didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Ask your sister why your parents really hid the truth.””
Rachel looked shocked.
“Wait—”
The call ended.
Claire stared at the screen.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rachel whispered:
“I think I know who that was.””
Claire looked at her.
“Who?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Someone from our family.””
The next morning, Claire returned to her parents’ old house.
It had been empty since her mother passed away.
She rarely visited.
Too many memories.
Too many things left unsaid.
But now she needed answers.
Rachel followed her.
Neither of them talked much during the drive.
The old house looked exactly the same.
The garden.
The faded paint.
The wooden steps where Claire and Rachel used to sit as children.
Claire unlocked the door.
Inside, the air smelled like the past.
Rachel walked slowly through the living room.
“I hate that everything feels normal.””
Claire understood.
A normal house.
A not-so-normal truth.
They searched through old cabinets.
Old drawers.
Old boxes.
For hours.
Then Rachel found something.
“Claire.””
She held a small notebook.
A diary.
Their mother’s diary.
Claire took it carefully.
“Are you sure?””
Rachel nodded.
“This was hidden behind the bookshelf.””
They sat at the dining table.
The same table where their family had eaten together for years.
Claire opened the diary.
The first pages were ordinary.
Recipes.
Appointments.
Family memories.
Then she reached a section marked with a date.
The year before Claire was born.
Her hands became still.
She began reading.
“Today, we made the hardest decision of our lives.””
Claire looked at Rachel.
Her sister leaned closer.
The diary continued.
“We were told there was no other choice.””
Claire’s heartbeat increased.
“We thought we were protecting everyone.””
A few more lines.
Then the sentence that changed everything.
“Our first child deserves the truth, but the world may never allow us to give it.””
Claire stopped.
Rachel covered her mouth.
“First child.””
Claire kept reading.
“We named her Emma.””
The room went silent.
Emma.
A name neither sister had ever heard.
Claire looked up.
“Emma?””
Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t know anyone named Emma.””
Claire looked back at the diary.
The next page was torn.
Again.
Someone had removed the answer.
Someone had taken the exact part they needed.
But this time, there was something left.
A sentence at the bottom.
“If anything happens, find Daniel.””
Claire frowned.
“Who is Daniel?””
Rachel looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
Then Claire noticed something.
A photograph tucked inside the diary.
She pulled it out.
A baby.
A hospital bracelet.
And two names.
Mother: Elizabeth Carter.
Father: Michael Carter.
Child: Emma Carter.
Claire felt dizzy.
Her family had another child.
A daughter.
A sister.
Someone who had disappeared before Claire was born.
Rachel stared at the picture.
“All these years…”
Her voice broke.
“Our parents never told us.””
Claire looked at the baby’s face.
She felt a strange sadness.
A person who had existed.
A person who had been loved.
A person erased from the family story.
Then Rachel noticed something on the hospital bracelet.
A symbol.
The same symbol.
Claire’s hands shook.
“This is connected.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“Everything is.””
They searched the diary again.
Near the end, they found one final entry.
Written years later.
After Claire had been born.
“I see the same danger approaching again. They have found our family.””
Claire read the next line.
“My youngest daughter must never know what happened to Emma.””
Then the final sentence:
“If they ever return, they will try to use another child to force the truth into the open.””
Claire dropped the diary.
Another child.
Mia.
Rachel looked terrified.
“They used Mia because she is your daughter.””
Claire nodded.
“But why?””
Then they heard a sound.
A car door closing outside.
Both sisters froze.
Someone was at the house.
Claire slowly moved toward the window.
A person stood outside.
Holding the stolen photograph.
The person looked up.
And Claire recognized her immediately.
It was not a stranger.
It was not someone from the school.
It was someone she had trusted for years.
Someone who had been helping her search for answers.
The woman raised the photograph toward the window.
Then mouthed three words:
“You were never told.””
Claire’s blood turned cold.
Because the person standing outside was the only one who knew the entire story.

And she was not supposed to be there.
It was Mrs. Parker.
