Chapter 8: The Daughter They Never Told Me About
The photograph remained on my screen.
I couldn’t look away.
Not because of Ellie.
Not because of the man standing beside her.
Because of the reflection in the window behind them.
A face.
A person I knew.
Someone standing on the Aurora Crown.
Someone who had watched everything unfold.
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Everyone looked at me.
Adrian stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I turned the screen toward him.
His expression changed instantly.
Then my father saw it.
And all the color drained from his face.
“You know him.””
It wasn’t a question.
Richard Hart looked away.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“Dad.””
His silence was unbearable.
“Who is it?””
My mother started crying again.
“Claire, please.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I am done with please.””
My voice echoed through the lounge.
“For seven years, I asked questions and everyone told me I wasn’t ready.””
I looked at my father.
“I was ready when I became a mother.””
I looked at my mother.
“I was ready when I held Ellie for the first time.””
Then I looked at Lillian.
“I was ready when you all decided my daughter’s life belonged to you.””
Nobody spoke.
I held up the phone.
“Who is the person in this picture?””
My father swallowed.
Finally, he answered.
“Marcus’s daughter.””
I froze.
“What?””
Adrian frowned.
“Marcus Hart had a daughter?””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
My mind raced.
Marcus Hart.
A name from a birth certificate.
A name my mother said was impossible.
A man who was supposedly dead.
“You said Marcus is dead.””
My mother nodded.
“He is.””
“Then why does he have a daughter?””
My father looked toward the ocean.
“Because we never told you the entire story.””
I almost laughed.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
“What was her name?””
My father hesitated.
Then said:
“Amelia.””
The name felt unfamiliar.
But the fear on their faces was familiar.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lillian whispered:
“She’s been here.””
I turned.
“What?””
Lillian looked toward the upper deck.
“Amelia has been part of this family for years.””
My heart stopped.
“You know her?””
“Yes.””
“Who is she?””
My sister looked at my father.
“Tell her.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Then spoke.
“Amelia Hart is your half-sister.””
The room disappeared for a second.
I stared at him.
“What did you say?””
My father looked at me.
“Marcus was my brother.””
I felt sick.
“You never told me I had an uncle.””
“Because Marcus wasn’t just my brother.””
His voice lowered.
“He was my enemy.””
The words made no sense.
“Why?””
My father looked exhausted.
“Because Marcus discovered what Nathaniel Vale was planning.””
Adrian went still.
“What planning?””
My father looked at him.
“The reason Ellie became valuable.””
The room became silent.
I looked between them.
“My daughter.””
I said the words slowly.
“My daughter is connected to some family war?””
My father nodded.
“Not a war.””
“Then what?””
“A truth.””
I hated that answer.
I hated every answer my family gave.
They always sounded like they were protecting something more important than me.
“What truth?””
My father hesitated.
Then:
“Marcus discovered Nathaniel wasn’t trying to control Ellie because she was his granddaughter.””
“Then why?””
“Because Ellie was the only person who could expose him.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Expose him for what?””
My father looked at the birth certificate.
“The original documents.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What about them?””
“Marcus found records that proved Nathaniel had been hiding money, changing legal documents, and controlling families through illegal agreements.””
I stared.
“And Ellie?””
My father’s expression changed.
“Your daughter’s birth records were connected to those documents.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
“Because Nathaniel needed Ellie’s identity changed.””
“Why?””
“Because the original birth certificate proved a connection he couldn’t erase.””
I looked down.
The paper.
The name.
Marcus Hart.
My father’s dead brother.
A man I had never met.
“Why was Marcus listed as her father?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian did.
“Because Nathaniel forced it.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Adrian’s face was filled with anger.
“Your father isn’t the only one who was controlled.””
Richard looked at him.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“She deserves everything.””
He looked at me.
“Marcus helped your father hide Ellie’s real connection to Nathaniel.””
My head spun.
“Why would he help?””
“Because he knew Nathaniel would destroy her life.””
“Then why put his name on the document?””
Adrian went quiet.
My father answered.
“Because Marcus was willing to become the villain if it meant Ellie survived.””
I stared at him.
A man who was dead.
A man who had sacrificed his name.
A man I never knew.
And somehow, he had been protecting my daughter.
“Where is Amelia now?””
Nobody answered.
Then the lounge door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
She looked around thirty.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
And a face I had never seen before.
But something about her felt familiar.
She looked directly at me.
Then at the birth certificate in my hand.
“You finally found it.””
My heart stopped.
“Who are you?””
The woman stepped inside.
“My name is Amelia Hart.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my father.
He couldn’t look at me.
I looked at my mother.
She looked terrified.
Then I looked at Amelia.
“You’re the person in the photo.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“You have my daughter.””
A painful expression crossed her face.
“Yes.””
My body moved before my mind.
I stepped forward.
“Where is she?””
Amelia didn’t move.
“She’s safe.””
“That’s not your decision.””
“I know.””
“Then bring her back.””
Her eyes softened.
“I want to.””
“But?””
She looked at the others.
“Your family needs to tell you the last part.””
I turned.
“No.””
I laughed.
“No more.””
Amelia’s voice stopped me.
“Claire.””
Something about the way she said my name made me listen.
“You think the worst thing your family did was hide Ellie’s father.””
I stared.
She shook her head.
“It wasn’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“What was it?””
Amelia looked at my mother.
Then my father.
Then finally me.
“The night Ellie was born…”
She paused.
“Someone tried to make sure she never left the hospital.””
The room went completely silent.
My heart pounded.
“What?””
Amelia continued.
“Marcus found out there was an attempt to remove Ellie from the records.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“And he stopped it.””
I looked at my father.
“Who tried?””
Nobody answered.
Amelia stepped closer.
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“What question should I ask?””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“You should ask why your mother signed the papers.””
I turned.
My mother looked broken.
“What papers?””
She whispered:
“The ones that said if anything happened to you…”
My blood ran cold.
“If anything happened to me?””
She nodded.
“The agreement gave custody of Ellie to someone else.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Who?””
My mother looked at me.
Tears falling freely now.
“Your brother.””
I froze.
“My brother?””
She nodded.
“Marcus.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
My mother’s voice trembled.
“Claire…”
She looked at me like she was finally surrendering.
“You had a brother.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The birth certificate.
The name.
The fear.
The secrets.
But one question remained.
A question that made my entire body cold.
“If I had a brother…”
I whispered.
“Why did everyone tell me I was an only child?””
Nobody answered.
Then Amelia looked at me.
And said the words that changed everything.
“Because Marcus Hart didn’t die.””
A silence followed.
“He disappeared.””
May you like
She looked toward the ocean.
“And he’s the man who has your daughter now.””
