Chapter 6: The Secret Daniel Left Behind
“Her name was Emily.””
Rachel’s voice was barely audible through the phone.
I stood frozen beside my car, unable to move.
The school parking lot was filled with ordinary sounds.
Cars starting.
Parents talking.
Children laughing as they walked toward classrooms.
But none of it felt real.
Because one name had just opened a door I never knew existed.
Emily.
“Who is Emily?”” I asked.
Rachel was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Rachel.””
She sighed.
“I should have told you years ago.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I knew something about Daniel that you didn’t.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
For two years, I had lived with the belief that I knew my husband completely.
His favorite songs.
The way he laughed when Mia told jokes.
The way he always burned pancakes because he got distracted trying to make them shaped like animals.
The way he held my hand during difficult moments without saying a word.
I knew Daniel.
Or at least I thought I did.
“What did you know?””
Rachel took a shaky breath.
“Before you and Daniel got married, he worked with someone named Emily Collins.””
My heart stopped.
“Mrs. Collins?””
“Yes.””
The name suddenly made sense.
The teacher.
The messages.
The anger.
The obsession with Mia.
“But why would she hate my daughter?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Rachel.””
“I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Emily doesn’t see Mia as Mia.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She sees her as a reminder.””
“A reminder of what?””
Rachel’s voice became softer.
“Of what she lost.””
I looked at the school building.
The same building where my daughter had danced.
The same place where someone had tried to destroy her confidence.
“Tell me everything.””
Rachel was silent for a moment.
Then she began.
“Before Daniel met you, he worked at a community arts center. Emily was another instructor there.””
I listened.
“She was talented. Passionate. Everyone loved her. Daniel respected her.””
I closed my eyes.
“Were they together?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“Then what happened?””
“They were close friends. That’s all.””
I felt a small sense of relief.
But it disappeared when Rachel continued.
“Emily had a daughter.””
My heart sank.
“A daughter?””
“Yes.””
“What was her name?””
Rachel paused.
“Lily.””
The name felt unfamiliar.
But something about it bothered me.
“What happened to Lily?””
“That’s the part no one talks about.””
My breathing slowed.
“Rachel.””
“Lily was supposed to perform at a big showcase. It was the same kind of event Mia had.””
I looked down.
A performance.
A stage.
A child’s dream.
“She practiced for months,” Rachel continued.
“She was excited. She believed that night would change everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
“There was an accident.””
“What kind of accident?””
Rachel hesitated.
“One that Emily blamed Daniel for.””
I stared ahead.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel was responsible for organizing the event.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“But accidents happen.””
“Yes.””
“Then why blame him?””
“Because Emily never accepted that it wasn’t anyone’s fault.””
I swallowed.
“And what does this have to do with Mia?””
Rachel’s voice became heavy.
“Because Lily never got her moment.””
I looked toward the school entrance.
Mia’s face appeared in my mind.
Her excitement.
Her fear.
Her tears.
“Emily thinks Daniel’s family moved on while hers was destroyed.””
I shook my head.
“But Daniel has been gone for two years.””
“I know.””
“So why now?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Then I heard something in her voice.
Fear.
“Rachel?””
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“The night before Mia’s performance, I found Emily looking through old files.””
“What files?””
“Daniel’s.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wasn’t sure.””
“You saw her searching through my husband’s things and didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You were protecting a secret.””
Rachel went silent.
And that silence hurt.
Because it was true.
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I sat in my car.
I wanted to be angry at Rachel.
I wanted to blame her for keeping things from me.
But another feeling was stronger.
Fear.
Because suddenly, everything had a pattern.
The costume.
The messages.
The camera.
The bracelet.
This wasn’t about a dance anymore.
This was about the past.
And Mia was paying for something she had nothing to do with.
That evening, I went through Daniel’s old belongings.
Boxes I had avoided opening since his death.
His clothes.
His notebooks.
His photographs.
Things that still smelled like him.
I hated searching through them.
It felt like invading a part of him that belonged only to us.
But I needed answers.
Inside an old wooden box, I found something I had never seen before.
A folder.
On the front was written:
*Emily Collins — Arts Center Project*
My hands went cold.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Letters.
And one newspaper article.
The headline made my heart race.
*Young Performer Withdraws Before Final Showcase After Backstage Incident*
I read the article.
Lily Collins.
Age eight.
A talented young dancer.
A promising performer.
A child who never stepped onto the stage.
I kept reading.
The article mentioned a costume problem.
A last-minute issue.
A child too devastated to perform.
My breath caught.
The similarities were impossible to ignore.
Someone had destroyed Lily’s moment years ago.
And now someone had tried to destroy Mia’s.
But there was one detail that confused me.
At the bottom of the article was a quote from Daniel.
“I take responsibility for what happened.””
I stared at the sentence.
Daniel had blamed himself.
Why?
I searched through the folder.
Then I found another document.
A handwritten letter.
Daniel’s handwriting.
The same handwriting I had seen on birthday cards and notes left on the kitchen counter.
I unfolded it.
Emily,
I know you don’t believe me, but I never wanted Lily to be hurt.
I made a mistake by trusting the wrong person.
My heart skipped.
The wrong person?
I continued reading.
I should have told the truth immediately.
I should have protected her.
I should have listened when someone warned me.
I stopped.
Someone warned him?
Who?
The letter continued.
But I need you to know one thing. The person who caused what happened that night is not the person you think.
I stared at the page.
A cold shiver moved through me.
Daniel knew.
He knew someone else was responsible.
And he never told anyone.
Why?
At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
If anything ever happens to me, make sure Mia never meets the person who destroyed Lily’s future.
I dropped the letter.
My heart was pounding.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Daniel wasn’t just hiding a mistake.
He was protecting Mia from someone.
Someone who was still nearby.
Someone who had spent years waiting.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Rachel.
I almost didn’t answer.
But I did.
“What?””
Her voice sounded frightened.
“You found the folder, didn’t you?””
I froze.
“How did you know?””
“Because Daniel showed it to me once.””
“What?””
“He told me if anything happened, I needed to keep Mia away from that person.””
My breathing stopped.
“Who?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
“Rachel. Who was Daniel afraid of?””
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
“The person who caused Lily’s accident.””
“Who?””
Her voice cracked.
“The person Daniel trusted most.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Say the name.””
Rachel took a breath.
Then she said:
“It was someone in your family.””
I froze.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
The silence on the phone lasted several seconds.
Then Rachel finally answered.
May you like
And the name she spoke made my entire world fall apart.
“Your mother.””
