Chapter 5: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Vanessa sat on the bottom step of the staircase.
Her hands were pressed together, and her wedding ring turned slowly around her finger.
Marcus stood several feet away.
"Start talking.""
She looked at him.
"Please, can we do this somewhere private?""
"No.""
"Marcus—"
"You humiliated my mother in front of fifty people. You accused her of stealing. You lied about the money.
You lied about David. I think we've passed the point where privacy matters.""
Evelyn remained beside the fireplace.
She wanted to hear the truth.
But she also wanted to believe there was still something recognizable about the woman she had welcomed into her family.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"The man who came here tonight isn't David Mercer.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Who is he?""
"His name is Adrian Cole.""
Daniel frowned.
"Adrian Cole?""
Vanessa nodded.
"He worked for David. He handled his private investments.""
"And why does he look like the man in your photograph?"" Marcus asked.
"Because he was always with him.""
Evelyn remembered the silver watch.
"Why did you introduce him to me as a financial consultant?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because I needed access to Robert's documents.""
The room went quiet.
Marcus stepped forward.
"What documents?""
"An old agreement.""
"Which agreement?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"The original partnership agreement between your father and David Mercer.""
Daniel looked at her.
"That agreement was never recorded.""
"Because it was private.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Why would Dad make a private partnership agreement?""
Vanessa finally looked up.
"Because David was helping him purchase a company.""
"Which company?""
"Northbridge Holdings.""
Daniel let out a short breath.
"That's ridiculous.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Why?""
"Because Northbridge was incorporated after Robert's death.""
She froze.
Daniel continued.
"Your timeline doesn't make sense.""
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
"Robert created the original holding structure. David reorganized it after his death.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No. Robert never discussed any company called Northbridge.""
Vanessa's voice became desperate.
"He didn't discuss it because he was afraid you would stop him.""
Evelyn stared at her.
"Stop him from what?""
"From selling the company.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"That's enough. You're going to tell us exactly what happened.""
Vanessa stood.
"Your father was in financial trouble. He had invested in a major development project that failed. David offered to help him recover.""
"How much did he lose?""
"Almost nine million dollars.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Robert's company never reported anything close to that.""
"Because the loss was hidden.""
Evelyn felt her stomach tighten.
She remembered the final months of Robert's life.
He had become unusually quiet.
He sometimes woke in the middle of the night and walked downstairs to his study. He had stopped discussing business over dinner.
But he had always reassured her.
"Everything is fine, sweetheart," he would say.
"Just a few difficult contracts.""
Had those been lies?
Marcus pulled out a chair.
"Continue.""
Vanessa took a breath.
"David promised to cover the losses if Robert transferred some shares to him. Robert agreed. But after he died, the paperwork was never completed.""
"So you completed it?"" Marcus asked.
"No.""
"Then who did?""
Vanessa looked at the floor.
"I did.""
Marcus stared.
"You forged Dad's signature?""
"I was trying to protect the company.""
"By giving away forty-nine percent of it?""
"By making sure the debt disappeared!""
Daniel looked at the document.
"That's not how it works.""
Vanessa began pacing.
"You don't understand. David was threatening to take everything. He said if the agreement wasn't honored, he would destroy the company.""
Marcus stood.
"Why didn't you come to me?""
"Because you would have blamed me.""
"Perhaps because you were doing something wrong!""
Vanessa stopped.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then she whispered, "I wasn't the only one.""
Evelyn looked up.
"What do you mean?""
Vanessa returned to the staircase and picked up her handbag.
She opened a small compartment and removed a photograph.
It was older than the one Robert had kept in the safe.
The picture showed Robert standing outside a hotel.
Beside him was a young woman with dark hair.
Evelyn recognized the hotel.
It was the same place where Robert had taken her for their fortieth wedding anniversary.
But she had never seen the woman.
"Who is she?"" Evelyn asked.
Vanessa looked at her.
"Her name was Catherine.""
Marcus frowned.
"Who was Catherine?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"David's wife.""
Evelyn stared at the photograph.
"What was my husband doing with her?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know everything.""
"But you know something.""
"Yes.""
She placed the photograph on the table.
"Robert and Catherine were investigating David before the partnership agreement was signed. They believed he was stealing money from several investors.""
Daniel examined the photograph.
"Then why would Robert do business with him?""
"Because he needed evidence.""
Marcus looked confused.
"What evidence?""
Vanessa turned toward Evelyn.
"Robert believed David was using stolen identities to purchase shares in legitimate businesses. He wanted to expose him.""
Evelyn slowly sat down.
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he thought you were being watched.""
A cold sensation moved through Evelyn's chest.
"By whom?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the ceiling.
"By someone inside this house.""
Marcus followed her gaze.
"What are you talking about?""
"Your father didn't trust the staff. He didn't trust his business partners. He even stopped trusting some members of the family.""
Evelyn's voice was barely audible.
"Robert trusted me.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"I know.""
"Then he would have told me.""
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"Not if he thought you were in danger.""
Evelyn rose.
"Enough. I want the truth.""
Vanessa reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small digital recorder.
"Robert gave me this two weeks before he died.""
Marcus frowned.
"Why would he give you that?""
"Because he wanted me to deliver it to you.""
"Then why didn't you?""
"Because I was afraid.""
She placed the recorder on the table.
Marcus pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Robert's voice emerged.
It was unmistakable.
"Marcus, if you're hearing this, something has gone terribly wrong.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Her husband's voice sounded tired, but clear.
"I need you to understand that the company is not what you think it is. The debt is real, but the person responsible for it is not David Mercer.""
A pause.
Then Robert continued.
"Someone has been using his name.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
The recording crackled.
"Your mother knows nothing about this. I wanted to keep it that way. But if the documents are missing, you must find the original account records.""
Another pause.
Then came a sentence that made Evelyn's knees weaken.
"Most importantly, do not believe the person who tells you I died peacefully.""
The recorder clicked off.
Nobody moved.
Evelyn stared at the little device.
Robert had died in a hospital room at 3:20 in the morning.
The doctors had said his heart had stopped.
She had been holding his hand.
She had kissed his forehead.
She had watched the monitor flatten.
What could possibly have happened that night?
Marcus picked up the recorder.
"Vanessa, where did you get this?""
"From Robert.""
"When?""
"Two weeks before he died.""
"Why did you hide it?""
She began crying again.
"Because I thought he was going to accuse me.""
"Of what?""
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
Then she said something neither of them expected.
"Your father believed I had helped David steal from him. But I hadn't.""
Daniel crossed his arms.
"Then why did you sign the transfer documents?""
"Because David threatened me.""
"With what?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she removed her wedding ring.
Inside the band was a tiny engraving.
Evelyn leaned closer.
There were two letters.
D.M.
Marcus stared.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa's voice broke.
"David Mercer wasn't just my financial partner.""
She looked at Marcus.
"He was my first husband.""
The silence was immediate.
Marcus took a step backward.
"What?""
Vanessa nodded.
"We were married before I met you.""
Evelyn stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell my son?""
"Because I thought he would leave me.""
Marcus laughed once.
A hollow, disbelieving sound.
"You married me without telling me you'd been married before?""
"I was afraid.""
"Did you divorce him?""
Vanessa looked away.
"Yes.""
"Then why are his initials engraved inside your wedding ring?""
She didn't answer.
Marcus picked up the photograph again.
"Who is the man outside the warehouse?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"Adrian Cole.""
"And what does he want?""
She looked at the digital recorder.
"Whatever Robert hid before he died.""
Marcus stepped toward her.
"Then we're going to find it.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his sleeve.
"No! You can't go to that warehouse.""
"Why?""
"Because it's a trap.""
"How do you know?""
Her eyes filled with genuine terror.
"Because I was there yesterday.""
Evelyn looked at her.
"With Adrian?""
Vanessa nodded.
"And someone else.""
"Who?""
Vanessa looked at the family photograph on the desk.
Her voice became almost inaudible.
"Someone you both know.""
Marcus waited.
May you like
Then Vanessa whispered the name.
"Your father's doctor.""
