Chapter 8: The Son Hidden From His Father
Nathan forgot how to breathe.
The words echoed through the phone.
*Your daughters have a brother.*
No.
It couldn’t be true.
His mind rejected it before his heart could even process it.
Claire was dead.
He had watched the funeral.
He had held her wedding ring in his hands.
He had stood beside a grave covered in snow and promised a woman who could no longer hear him that he would protect their daughters.
And now someone was saying Claire was alive.
That she had a son.
That Vanessa had been raising him.
Nathan gripped the phone tighter.
“Prove it.””
The voice on the other end trembled.
“I knew you would say that.””
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m the person Claire trusted when she realized she was running out of time.””
Nathan looked at Daniel.
The attorney was already recording the call.
Good.
For once, Nathan wasn’t reacting.
He was thinking.
“Where is Claire?””
Silence.
Too long.
“Answer me.””
“She can’t come back yet.””
Nathan felt anger rise.
“Can’t?””
His voice sharpened.
“Do you understand what I’ve been through?””
The woman started crying.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
“I do.””
Her voice broke.
“Because I watched you bury her.””
Nathan froze.
The room went silent.
The woman continued.
“I was there.””
Daniel looked at Nathan.
A warning in his eyes.
Be careful.
Nathan forced himself to stay calm.
“If you were there, tell me something only someone close to Claire would know.””
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Claire hated roses.””
Nathan froze.
Daniel looked confused.
The woman continued.
“Everyone thought she loved them because they looked romantic. But she told me roses were too predictable. She liked wildflowers because they survived without anyone taking care of them.””
Nathan’s eyes burned.
That was true.
Only Claire knew that.
Only someone who truly knew her would know.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Olivia.””
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Olivia what?””
“Olivia Hart.””
The name meant nothing.
But the truth behind it did.
“Where is Claire?””
Olivia lowered her voice.
“She’s not the person you need to find first.””
Nathan stared at the phone.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Vanessa knows Claire survived.””
His blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She knows.””
Nathan looked toward the hallway.
The mansion suddenly felt dangerous again.
“Then why did she tell me Claire was dead?””
“Because Vanessa was helping Richard create a new life.””
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“A new life?””
“A life where you were alone. A life where your daughters depended on her. A life where nobody questioned what happened.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Ask about the child.””
Nathan nodded.
“The baby.””
Olivia went quiet.
Then:
“His name is Noah.””
Nathan felt something twist inside him.
A son.
A child he never knew existed.
“How old?””
“Almost two.””
Nathan looked at Daniel.
Two years.
The same amount of time since Claire died.
The same amount of time Vanessa entered his life.
“When was he born?””
Olivia answered softly.
“Three months after Claire’s accident.””
Nathan’s face changed.
Three months.
Impossible.
Unless…
Claire had survived.
Unless the accident was not what everyone told him.
“Where is he?””
“I don’t know anymore.””
Nathan’s heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
“Vanessa moved him.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
The frustration built inside him.
“You called me with information but you don’t know where the child is?””
“I called because I found something.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
Nathan looked at Daniel.
“What recording?””
“A recording Claire made before she disappeared.””
The words hit him.
“Disappeared?””
Olivia immediately corrected herself.
“Before everyone believed she died.””
Nathan gripped the phone.
“Where is this recording?””
“I have it.””
“Send it.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa is watching everything.””
Nathan looked around the hidden room.
The documents.
The secrets.
The evidence.
“How did you contact me?””
“Because Claire told me to.””
His heart stopped.
“She knew I would find you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she left.””
Nathan swallowed.
“Left where?””
Olivia’s voice became quieter.
“She went into hiding.””
A thousand questions filled his mind.
Why?
How?
Who helped her?
Why didn’t she come back?
But one question was louder than all the others.
Why did she let him believe she was dead?
As if Olivia heard the question in his silence, she said:
“I know what you’re thinking.””
Nathan didn’t answer.
“You think Claire abandoned you.””
His eyes closed.
Because yes.
A part of him did.
A part of him had carried that pain for two years.
The woman he loved.
The mother of his children.
Gone.
Without goodbye.
“She didn’t,” Olivia whispered.
Nathan opened his eyes.
“She wanted to come home.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
A long pause.
“Because she believed if she returned, your daughters would die.””
The room went cold.
Nathan looked toward the stairs.
Where his daughters slept.
“Explain.””
“Richard and Vanessa knew Claire had discovered their plan. But they didn’t know how much evidence she had.””
Nathan listened carefully.
“Claire believed they would hurt the girls to protect themselves.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Ask about the accident.””
Nathan did.
“What happened the night Claire died?””
Olivia’s breathing changed.
“I wasn’t there.””
Nathan frowned.
“But?””
“But Claire told me something before she left.””
“What?””
“She said if anything happened to her, you should never believe the accident report.””
Nathan felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because the brakes were damaged before she drove.””
Silence.
Nathan stared at Daniel.
The room seemed to tilt.
For two years, he had pictured Claire losing control on an icy road.
A tragic accident.
A random moment.
But now…
Someone had wanted her gone.
Someone had tried to erase her.
“Where is Claire now?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then:
“I can arrange a meeting.””
Nathan stepped forward.
“When?””
“Tomorrow.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Tonight.””
“Mr. Caldwell—”
“I waited two years.””
Nathan looked at the photograph of Claire holding the baby.
“I’m not waiting another day.””
Olivia was silent.
Then she whispered:
“Come alone.””
Nathan immediately said:
“No.””
“Then I won’t come.””
The call ended.
Nathan stared at the phone.
Daniel looked at him.
“You can’t go alone.””
“I know.””
“She may be setting a trap.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you agree?””
Nathan looked at the photograph again.
Because he finally understood.
This wasn’t about revenge.
Not yet.
This was about answers.
About four little girls upstairs who deserved to know why their mother disappeared.
About a child named Noah who had grown up without knowing his father.
About Claire.
The woman who had spent two years trying to protect them.
An hour later, Nathan returned to the girls’ room.
They were awake.
Emma sat up immediately.
“Daddy?””
Nathan forced a smile.
“Hey.””
Grace looked at him.
“You found the secret?””
Nathan sat on the edge of the bed.
“Yes.””
“What was inside?””
Nathan looked at his daughters.
How do you explain impossible things to children?
How do you tell them their mother might not be gone?
How do you tell them the world they know might collapse again?
“I found something about Mommy.””
Emma’s eyes widened.
“Is she okay?””
Nathan’s throat tightened.
“I don’t know yet.””
Lily frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Nathan reached for her hand.
“It means I’m going to find out.””
Sophie looked nervous.
“Are you leaving?””
The question came again.
The question that broke him every time.
Nathan shook his head.
“No.””
“Promise?””
Nathan looked at them.
This time, he didn’t answer quickly.
He thought carefully.
Because promises without action were just words.
“I promise I will come back.””
Emma watched him.
Then she nodded.
As if she wanted to believe him.
As if she was trying.
Nathan kissed each of their foreheads.
When he reached the door, Grace spoke.
“Daddy?””
He turned.
“Yes?””
She held the stuffed rabbit closer.
“Mommy said something else.””
Nathan froze.
“What?””
Grace whispered:
“She said if you ever found the truth…”
A pause.
“…you should forgive her.””
Nathan felt his chest tighten.
“Why?””
Grace looked confused.
“Because she said she had to hurt you to save us.””
Nathan stood there.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Because for two years, he had mourned a dead wife.
But maybe…
Maybe Claire had been alive all along.
Maybe she had been suffering too.
His phone buzzed.
A new message.
From Olivia.
An address.
And one sentence.
*Come before midnight. Bring the proof Claire left you.*
Nathan stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Not from Olivia.
From Vanessa.
His blood turned cold.
*I know you found the room.*
A second message followed.
*You should have left the past buried.*
Nathan looked toward the sleeping girls.
Then toward the dark hallway.
May you like
The truth was finally coming.
But someone was willing to do anything to stop it.
