Thinking

Chapter 6: The Engagement Party from Hell

The ballroom doors opened just as the orchestra began the final song of the evening.

Three hundred guests stood beneath the chandeliers, holding champagne glasses and waiting for Vanessa Sterling and Ethan Whitmore to announce their engagement.

Vanessa stood on the raised platform beside a towering arrangement of white roses. Her dress shimmered beneath the lights, and her smile was so perfect that the photographer beside the stage asked her to hold it for another shot.

"Beautiful," he said.

"One more, Miss Sterling.""

Vanessa tilted her chin.

The camera flashed.

Then she noticed Ethan entering the ballroom.

Her smile widened.

"There you are, darling.""

She stepped down from the platform and crossed the floor toward him, extending both hands.

"I was beginning to think you'd abandoned me.""

Ethan stopped several feet away.

"Not yet.""

The words were quiet, but Naomi heard them.

Vanessa's smile faltered.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan glanced at the guests.

"We need to talk.""

"Of course."" Vanessa laughed lightly.

"But perhaps not in front of everyone.""

She reached for his arm.

He stepped away.

The movement was small.

The effect was immediate.

A nearby senator stopped speaking. Two journalists exchanged glances. At the bar, an investor lowered his glass.

Vanessa noticed every reaction.

She had built her life around reading rooms, and she knew when a room began turning against her.

"What's wrong?"" she asked softly.

Ethan looked directly at her.

"Did you kill my father?""

The orchestra faltered.

A violinist missed a note.

Vanessa's face went pale, but only for a moment.

Then she laughed.

"Oh, Ethan. You've had too much stress tonight.""

"Answer me.""

She moved closer and lowered her voice.

"Darling, your father's death was a tragedy. We've discussed this. The doctors—"

"The doctors found a synthetic cardiac toxin in his supplements.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

For the first time, she looked genuinely unprepared.

Ethan continued.

"The pharmacy records lead directly to your private trust. The payments were made six months before he died.""

A hush spread across the ballroom.

Someone whispered, "Good Lord.""

Vanessa turned toward the guests, raising her hands in a gesture of helpless amusement.

"This is ridiculous. Ethan has been under enormous pressure. The company has been fighting off a hostile takeover, and his aunt has been filling his head with conspiracy theories.""

Margaret emerged from behind Naomi.

"I haven't told him anything he didn't already know.""

Vanessa's expression sharpened.

"Margaret, perhaps you should sit down.""

"No.""

The single word seemed to surprise them both.

Margaret stepped into the open space beside Ethan.

"I know about the Philadelphia payments, Vanessa. I know about Graham Cole. And I know that Richard discovered what you were doing before he died.""

Vanessa stared at her.

Then she smiled again.

"You signed the first payment yourself, Margaret.""

The guests erupted into whispers.

Margaret flinched, but she did not retreat.

"Yes. I authorized money for an operation I was told would recover stolen documents. I was wrong to trust Graham.

I was wrong to remain silent afterward. But I never ordered Mateo Reyes to be killed.""

Naomi felt the name move through the crowd like a sudden wind.

A journalist near the front began typing rapidly on his phone.

Vanessa turned toward Naomi.

"You.""

She pointed a trembling finger.

"This woman has spent months stealing confidential information from my home. She's a disgraced security operative who has been stalking me since Philadelphia.""

Naomi stepped forward.

"Then you won't mind if we play the original recordings.""

Vanessa's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Ethan saw it.

He took the black drive from his pocket.

"Everything is on here.""

Vanessa stared at it as though it were a loaded weapon.

"Ethan, give me that.""

"No.""

"You don't understand what you're doing.""

"I understand exactly what I'm doing.""

She reached for the drive.

He stepped backward.

Vanessa's composure shattered.

"Do you have any idea how much I've sacrificed for you?""

Ethan looked at her with exhausted disbelief.

"My father is dead.""

"I loved your father!""

"You poisoned him.""

"I did what I had to do!""

The words burst out of her before she could stop them.

The ballroom went silent.

Vanessa froze.

Ethan stared at her.

"What did you just say?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she turned toward the guests.

"That isn't what I meant.""

Naomi looked toward the sound booth.

A technician stood behind the console, staring at them in alarm.

Naomi crossed the floor.

"Can you connect this drive to the projector?""

The technician looked toward Vanessa.

"Miss Sterling told us not to access any outside media.""

Naomi placed the drive on the console.

"Then tonight seems like a good time to start disobeying her.""

He hesitated.

Naomi met his eyes.

"If you refuse, she'll spend the rest of her life telling people you helped conceal a murder. If you cooperate, you might be the person who finally gives the authorities what they need.""

The technician swallowed.

Then he connected the drive.

The screen flickered.

A directory appeared.

Financial transfers. Internal correspondence. Audio files. Medical reports.

The guests turned toward the enormous display.

Vanessa rushed toward the sound booth.

"Stop it!""

Ethan caught her wrist.

She twisted violently, driving her elbow into his chest.

"Let go of me!""

He staggered, but he didn't release her.

"Not this time.""

The technician opened the first audio file.

Richard Whitmore's voice filled the ballroom.

"If this recording is being played, then the truth has finally reached the people who can do something about it.""

The room fell utterly silent.

Richard described the payments, the altered medical records, and the discovery that his supplements had been contaminated. He named Vanessa's trust as the source of the pharmacy purchases and Graham Cole as the executive who had coordinated the financial transfers.

Then the recording moved to the Philadelphia operation.

A second voice appeared.

Graham Cole.

"The developer refuses to sign. Vanessa wants him removed before the board meeting. The analyst has copies of the documents, so we need those recovered tonight.""

A third voice answered.

Vanessa.

"Then recover them. I don't care how. I want the acquisition completed, and I want the analyst's files destroyed.""

The recording ended.

For several seconds, the only sound in the ballroom was the faint hum of the projector.

Then the room exploded.

"Is this authentic?""

"Someone call the police!""

"Get the FBI down here!""

Cameras flashed from every direction.

Vanessa pulled free of Ethan and backed away from the stage.

"That's been edited! It's fabricated!""

Naomi walked toward her.

"Then explain the bank transfers.""

The screen changed.

A flowchart showed millions moving between Sterling Investments, offshore accounts, and private security contractors. Each transaction was linked to a supporting document.

The next slide displayed the medical examiner's supplemental report.

The following one showed the pharmacy invoices.

Vanessa stared at the evidence.

Her mouth opened, but no defense emerged.

Then she did something that shocked everyone.

She laughed.

It was a sharp, brittle sound.

"You think this proves anything? Do you know how many companies use offshore accounts? How many executives have private security contracts? Half the people in this room have done business through structures they couldn't explain to their own spouses.""

She swept her arm toward the guests.

"You're all pretending to be shocked because you think this is your chance to destroy me. But every one of you has benefited from the system you're suddenly condemning.""

Several guests looked away.

One man quietly lowered his phone.

Vanessa saw the hesitation and seized it.

"You know what? Fine. Let's talk about murder.""

She turned toward Ethan.

"Ask your aunt what she did with the first payment.""

Margaret stiffened.

Vanessa continued.

"Ask her why she was at the Philadelphia hotel the night Mateo Reyes died. Ask her why she met with him privately, why she argued with him in the parking garage, and why she left before the shooting.""

Naomi's heart slammed against her ribs.

Margaret looked as though she might collapse.

"That's not true," she whispered.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Isn't it?""

Naomi turned toward Margaret.

"Tell me.""

Margaret's lips trembled.

"I went to Philadelphia because Richard asked me to retrieve documents from Mateo. I met him in the garage. He told me the evidence implicated Graham, Vanessa, and someone else inside the Whitmore family.""

"Who?""

Margaret looked toward Ethan.

Then she looked away.

"Mateo refused to tell me. He said the person had access to every account in the company, including Richard's private trust.""

Vanessa smiled.

"And when he refused to hand over the documents, Margaret left him there.""

"I didn't know the gunmen were coming!""

"But you knew they were looking for him.""

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

The admission was devastating.

Naomi felt the anger rise again, but this time she forced herself to remain still.

Margaret had concealed the truth. She had made a terrible decision and spent three years hiding behind fear.

But the question remained: who had ordered the killing?

Naomi turned back toward the screen.

"Play the next file.""

The technician clicked on an audio recording labeled *TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION — ORIGINAL*.

Static crackled.

Then a man's voice spoke.

"I authorize the second payment. The witness must not be allowed to testify, and the original records must be destroyed.""

Naomi leaned toward the speakers.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it every morning at breakfast. She had heard it in the study, in the corridors, and at the memorial service for Richard Whitmore.

Ethan went rigid beside her.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Vanessa stopped smiling.

The voice continued.

"If the Philadelphia operation is traced back to us, the entire company will fall. I want the matter closed before Richard discovers what happened.""

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Then Ethan whispered the name.

"Graham.""

Naomi shook her head slowly.

"No.""

She stared at the screen, where the transcript of the audio file appeared beneath the financial records.

The speaker had authorized the payment using Richard Whitmore's private trust credentials.

But the recording had been made after Richard's death.

And the voice was not Graham's.

It was unmistakably Ethan's.

Ethan took a step backward.

"No," he whispered.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa looked at him.

For the first time that night, she seemed almost relieved.

"Oh, Ethan," she said softly.

"You really thought you could walk away from what you did?""

He stared at her in horror.

"I never authorized that payment.""

Vanessa's smile returned.

"Then perhaps you should explain why your voice is on the recording.""

The ballroom doors swung open.

Federal agents entered with Boston police officers close behind them.

At their head was a woman in a dark navy suit carrying a folder.

She moved directly toward Ethan.

"Mr. Whitmore, I'm Special Agent Laura Bennett with the FBI. We have a warrant for your arrest in connection with the Philadelphia murder investigation.""

Ethan looked at Naomi.

His face was white.

"I didn't do this.""

Naomi believed he might be telling the truth.

But belief was not evidence.

And as the agents closed around Ethan, Vanessa stepped toward the nearest camera and whispered something that made Naomi's blood run cold.

"You should have asked your brother what he was really doing in Philadelphia.""

Then the agents turned Ethan around and placed handcuffs on his wrists.

May you like

And Naomi realized the next person who might be led out of Whitmore House in chains would not be Vanessa Sterling.

It might be the man she had spent three years trying to save.
