Chapter 9: The Last Person Anyone Suspected

“Clara?””

Adrian’s voice echoed through the living room.

The scene in front of him didn’t make sense.

Lily stood frozen beside the sofa.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were empty.

And Clara, the woman who had protected her since she was a baby, was holding the second teddy bear.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not even Clara.

She looked down at the bear in her hands.

Then slowly looked at Adrian.

“I can explain.””

Those four words made the room feel colder.

Because Adrian had heard them too many times that night.

From Vanessa.

From people who had secrets.

From people who had been hiding pieces of the truth.

His expression changed.

“Why do you have it?””

Clara’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because I needed to make sure it was safe.””

“Safe from who?””

She looked away.

That was the answer Adrian didn’t want.

“Clara.””

His voice became quieter.

“Who are you protecting it from?””

Lily suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl shook her head.

“Clara wouldn’t hurt Mommy.””

The words broke the tension for a moment.

Because even now, Lily trusted her.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

He wanted to believe her.

More than anything.

But trust had become dangerous.

“Lily,” he said gently, “go stand with Daniel.””

She hesitated.

Then slowly walked away.

Clara watched her leave.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“I would never hurt her.””

Adrian stared.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Clara looked at the teddy bear.

“I took it because I knew someone would come looking for it.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“You’re lying.””

Clara flinched.

It was the first time he had ever spoken to her like that.

“I’m not.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me about Eleanor’s instructions?””

Clara lowered her eyes.

Because she knew exactly what he meant.

The promise.

The warnings.

The things Eleanor had told her.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Clara looked at Lily.

“Of failing her.””

The answer softened him for only a second.

Then the anger returned.

“Clara, my wife died. My brother betrayed me. Vanessa lied to me. Everyone around me kept secrets.””

His voice cracked.

“I need one person to tell me the truth.””

Clara nodded slowly.

“You deserve that.””

She placed the teddy bear on the table.

Then she sat down.

“I should have told you two years ago.””

Nobody spoke.

“I should have gone to you the moment Eleanor died.””

Adrian watched her carefully.

“But?””

Clara took a breath.

“But Eleanor made me promise something.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Not another promise.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know how it sounds.””

She looked at him.

“But Eleanor wasn’t protecting secrets. She was protecting Lily.””

Adrian remained silent.

Clara continued.

“The night Eleanor died, she called me.””

Adrian frowned.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she called after you left the hospital room.””

That sentence stopped him.

“After I left?””

Clara nodded.

“She sounded terrified.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“What did she say?””

Clara looked at the floor.

“She said, ‘If anything happens, don’t let them take Lily.’”

Nobody moved.

“She told me she had evidence.””

Adrian looked at Teddy.

“The cameras.””

“Yes.””

“What else?””

Clara hesitated.

“She said there was one thing she didn’t understand.””

“What?””

Clara’s eyes lifted.

“Why Michael and Vanessa were so confident.””

Adrian frowned.

“Confident?””

“She said they acted like they already knew they would win.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Because they had someone else helping them.””

Clara looked at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I suspected.””

Adrian turned.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that silence made Adrian angry again.

“Who?””

Before Daniel could respond, a sound came from the front door.

A knock.

Everyone froze.

Another knock.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Adrian walked toward the door.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever is outside knows we found the evidence.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Then I need to know who.””

He opened the door.

Nobody was there.

Only an envelope on the floor.

Adrian picked it up.

His name was written on the front.

*ADRIAN.*

Inside was a single piece of paper.

And a key.

He read the note.

*The truth about Eleanor’s death was never inside the bears.*

His eyes moved down.

*The bears were only proof.*

A second line.

*The real evidence is where Eleanor died.*

Adrian froze.

The hospital.

Daniel immediately understood.

“The hospital.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You know something.””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“Eleanor told me one thing before she died.””

“What?””

Daniel looked toward Lily.

“She said the person who hurt her came back to finish the job.””

Adrian felt sick.

“She knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew she might not survive.””

The key in Adrian’s hand felt heavier.

“What does this open?””

Nobody knew.

Then Clara spoke.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“The hospital storage room.””

Adrian looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Clara closed her eyes.

“Because Eleanor gave me the key.””

The room went silent.

“You had it?””

“Yes.””

“For two years?””

Clara nodded.

“I kept it because I couldn’t bring myself to open it.””

“Why?””

Clara looked at Lily.

“Because I was afraid of what I would find.””

Adrian stared at the key.

Everything led back to the same place.

The night Eleanor died.

The place where the truth began.

“We go tonight.””

Daniel nodded.

Clara stood.

“I’m coming.””

Adrian looked at her.

After everything.

After the secrets.

He still saw the woman who had cared for his daughter.

“Fine.””

Lily immediately stepped forward.

“I’m coming too.””

Adrian knelt.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But Teddy needs me.””

Everyone looked at the bear.

And then Adrian noticed something.

The second teddy bear’s ribbon was different.

A tiny stitch.

Almost invisible.

He picked it up.

“Wait.””

He examined it.

The ribbon wasn’t just decoration.

There was something written beneath the fabric.

A word.

*BASEMENT.*

Adrian stared.

Daniel looked over.

“What?””

Adrian showed him.

Nobody spoke.

Because they had all assumed the evidence was hidden somewhere else.

But Eleanor had left another message.

Another direction.

Another step.

And suddenly, Adrian understood.

The hospital wasn’t the only place they needed to search.

Eleanor had created a trail.

A trail designed to reveal the truth piece by piece.

Then Lily whispered:

“Mommy said Teddy would help Daddy.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What else did Mommy say?””

The little girl touched the bear’s ear.

“She said…”

She paused.

“Don’t trust the person who cries the loudest.””

Everyone went silent.

Because at that exact moment…

The basement door behind them slowly opened.

Nobody had touched it.

Nobody was standing near it.

And from the darkness below came a voice.

A voice Adrian knew.

A voice that made Clara’s face turn white.

“Looking for the rest of Eleanor’s secrets?””

Adrian stared into the darkness.

Then a man stepped into the light.

Michael.

Alive.

May you like

And smiling.

“I was wondering when you’d finally find them.””
